Holistic medicine as an alternative to conventional medicine – Nature’s Remedies

If you have pain or an ailment that needs treatment, these alternative medicine tips may help reduce your symptoms.

Are you under pressure? You have a splint headache or a migraine, how about trying an alternative remedy instead of using the usual pills? Give them a chance they might surprise you! Many people are skeptical about the use of alternative remedies and think that they do not work, but today many of them are very effective. Most herbal remedies are included in the Government’s Traditional Herbal Registration Scheme, which means they have the same standard of quality and safety as conventional medicines like paracetamol.

This proves that the product has at least thirty years of evidence to prove it is safe and its use has been carefully monitored as a traditional remedy. Once it’s registered, it can be sold legally and information can be placed on the packaging telling you how it can benefit your health, making it easier to make the right choice for your ailment. There is a nine digit registration number on the packaging that begins with the letters THR, this is proof that the product is registered, so if you look for the letters I mentioned, you will be able to verify this information yourself. Many people, myself included, combine herbal medicine along with conventional medicine quite effectively and with good results. It is always important to check with your doctor or pharmacist if it is safe to combine these medications as a precaution.

People assume that herbal medicine is not as potent as conventional medicine, that it can have side effects and contraindications. Therefore, you should carefully read all packaging and package inserts and do not take more than the dose indicated in the instructions.

Teaching English in China – Debunking the Myths

Do a Google search on “teaching English in China” and what you’ll find are over 54 million results listing websites mainly of China job recruiters, TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certification schools, forums of EFL and “cultural exchange programmes”. “that is, glorified recruitment agencies, all of which stand to gain a lot by convincing Westerners that moving to China to teach oral English is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and adventure.” While it is generally true that an EFL teaching position can be a good way to subsidize travel expenses to exotic places around the world, it is totally untrue for anyone to suggest that doing so makes sense as a new and permanent midway race. move.

This article will debunk some of the most common myths you’ll read about teaching English in China and make the case that doing so should only be considered by a very limited number of people who meet the criteria outlined below. It is written by an American psychoanalyst who has been working in China since 2003 as a mental health consultant and psychology professor.

Myth #1: All Chinese desperately want to learn English and will use it in their daily lives

China’s education system was completely overhauled in 1979 to achieve the goals of the Chinese Communist Party’s 1978 reform movement, adopted at the Third Plenum of the 11th Central Committee, in what is commonly known as the Four Modernizations. These four modernizations were in the fields of 1) agriculture, 2) industry, 3) technology, and 4) defense, and were specifically intended to make China a self-sufficient economic great power at the beginning of the 21st century (Wertz, 1998).

Nowhere in these four broad fields will you find English as a Foreign Language or any other humanity. The truth is that English as a foreign language has a very low status as an academic discipline in China. Basically, freshmen who scored too low on the national university admission test (Gao Kao) are assigned as a compulsory course of study to receive the requested major in a more lucrative field.

Unless students have definite plans, as well as considerable funding, to study abroad one day, hope to work for an international company, or intend to marry a foreigner, they will never use a single word of English for the rest of the day. of his studies. lives after graduating from college. In fact, in a land of 1.3 billion people, Chinese, not English, is the most widely spoken language in the world today. Many of us who have lived and worked in China for years have realized that what the Chinese really want is for the rest of the world to learn Chinese, and that wish could come true one day as the Middle Kingdom continues its rise. unbridled as a global economic power.

Foreign English teachers are so competitively recruited as to meet a much-resented and bitterly contested national requirement enacted by the Ministry of Education requiring exposure to a native speaker for all foreign language students. Apart from public schools and universities, the proliferation of private language schools, where the greatest abuse and exploitation of foreigners occur, has created an insatiable demand for white faces in the classroom to attract new students and charge higher tuition fees, much above what can be expected. they will be charged for classes with their Chinese English teachers only.

What you need to keep in mind is that because China’s academic leaders and administrators devalue the teaching and learning of English in China, the role of the foreign English teacher is deprofessionalized: limited to facilitating the speaking and listening of students. skills, with very few exceptions. Whether a foreign teacher has a PhD in linguistics with a specialty in second language acquisition methodology or is a recent college graduate with little or no relevant work experience, in the vast majority of cases, each will be assigned to teach precisely the same classes with a salary differential of no more than 700 yuan ($102.00) per month.

Myth #2: A foreign teacher can live very comfortably on the salary provided and can even save money

The average salary for a foreign English teacher in China, outside of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, is in the range of 4,000 to 6,000 yuan per month ($584 to $876, respectively) for 14 to 20 hours of face-to-face classes. face-to-face teaching per week (Mavrides, 2009). While it is true that this salary is up to 70 percent more than the current per capita national income of 1,800 yuan (Economy Watch, 2009), that doesn’t mean much unless you’re willing to live like a Chinese.

While it’s possible to save up to a third of your typical salary of 5,000 yuan per month, you’ll have to live fairly frugally to do so, which means completely forgoing all Western food and services and carefully restricting your use of utilities. . especially air conditioning. For example, a single can of Campbell’s Cream of Chicken sells for $3.21 (22 yuan) at a local western grocery store in Guangzhou and that comparative price ratio of 2 to 1 is fairly constant across all imported products in China. , even if you’re lucky enough to find them (and you won’t be outside of China’s three aforementioned international cities). Also, Western branded appliances and personal electronics will generally cost as much in China as in China, sometimes a little more, and you’ll often buy very high-end clones, meaning counterfeit products that won’t last as long as the originals. the genuine articles do.

The reality is that any Westerner who lived a middle-class existence in his home country will barely subsist on the typical salary that is given to most foreign oral English teachers in China. Even if you self-deprive enough to save some money, those savings will quickly disappear if you decide to travel or become seriously ill (no actual health insurance provided, only accidental injury insurance provided). Most foreign English teachers in China don’t do it because they don’t have enough.

In addition to salary concerns, you should also keep in mind that the “free” housing provided to foreign English teachers varies considerably in size and quality, and is more common today than what the Chinese working poor live in, it is say, small (580 to 900 square feet), old, dilapidated units in eight-story buildings with no elevators and hot water available for showering only. You’ll have to get used to washing your hands, as well as dishes, with cold water unless you decide to buy water heating units for bathroom and kitchen sinks on your own, and you can plan to get plenty of exercise especially if your apartment it is on the eighth floor.

Myth #3: Teaching English in China is fun, easy, and personally rewarding.

The reality is that teaching English in China is extremely exhausting and challenging work, and for the most part, thankless work. Although students who think they will use English one day will already have acquired reasonable speaking and listening skills, most of your students will not be able to understand you at all unless you speak very slowly and use simple vocabulary. Unfortunately, this is not only true for your students, but it will also be the case when you try to communicate with your colleagues, administrators, and just about anyone else you come into contact with in China, unless of course that other person is also a stranger. .

It is highly unlikely that anyone who is not a career EFL/ESL teacher will find the job personally or professionally rewarding, nor will anyone who is not an educator with a master’s degree and state teaching certification be able to make a real living out of it. . and only then teaching at an international school, joint venture program, or a Western university with a branch in China.

Myth #4: All native speakers can and should teach English in China

There are four groups of Westerners for whom teaching English in China may make sense: 1) recent college graduates who would like to study Chinese or gain some travel experience before returning home to resume their real careers; 2) active older adults in very good health looking for a short-term adventure (four to six months); 3) retired people looking to stretch their western pensions in an Asian country and, as mentioned above; 4) career EFL teachers who will work as school and program directors, or in positions only available to fully credentialed and licensed educators.

For anyone else, especially middle-aged and middle-aged people without considerable means, moving to China to teach English is likely to make you an economic prisoner of the Asian EFL system – you’ll be stuck spending the rest of your life teaching English as a foreign language with no savings, moving from job to job, perhaps country to country, hoping to find greener pastures and forever cursing the day you decided to teach English in China.

Compliment a person’s abilities with appreciative words

The famous psychologist, Dr. George Crane, said: “Words of thanks are the most powerful force for goodwill on earth.”

Psychologists want you to know that sincere praise, appreciation, which is a form of love, means just as much to people as food, work, and the other essentials of a normal, happy life. So here is one of your most important opportunities to gain the goodwill that is necessary for a successful career, marriage, and friendships, as well as the satisfaction that comes from being useful.

Do you have a rich, well-chosen treasure trove of companion words to tap into? Because the success of your compliments is limited by your vocabulary. If the only verbal bouquets you can give are “good” and “great,” you’re not doing an effective job of generating goodwill for yourself or satisfaction for others.

Everyone craves special recognition. That’s why a written note is more appreciated than a printed greeting card. So instead of offering stereotypical compliments that sound like dime greeting cards, bestow some of the specific and highly valued adjectives you’ll find in the next three chapters. They will show that you are grateful, that you have been moved to choose the special word for the particular person.

Psychologists and ministers tell us about the power of positive words to win friends and succeed. So isn’t it logical that a vocabulary of expressive words of appreciation is of paramount importance? Our language has many more words to describe the bad traits than to describe the good ones. So the best words of praise are actually verbal gems. This is your chance to own many of these “hit words” and, in the words of an old folk song, “Accentuate the Positive.”

THE SECRET OF FINDING SOMETHING TO PULL IN PEOPLE

Will Rogers, America’s beloved simple wise man, said, “I never met a man I didn’t like.” What Rogers meant, of course, was that he found some admirable quality in every man he met.

We can find something to congratulate everyone on if we adopt Will Rogers’ positive and caring attitude toward people. So he develops the habit of looking for the good points, not the bad ones. You will find what you are looking for.

You’ll develop your ability to compliment faster if you try to appreciate and praise everyone, regardless of whether they can “do you any good.” The fact is that every compliment you give does you good, even if it only helps you develop an attitude and a skill.

ask yourself; What is commendable in the other person, in his abilities, character, personality and appearance? Watch it carefully. Draw it about his job, his family, his home, and his hobbies.

Don’t overlook a person’s lesser attributes. A successful executive can get bored with the constant praise he receives for his business savvy. However, he can glow with pride when someone compliments his amateur photography prowess or his elegant appearance.

You don’t always have to find a direct compliment to give a person. When you say a nice word to someone about their family, their home, or their hobby, you are indirectly congratulating them. Of course, the easiest way to show your admiration for a person is to ask their opinion. You can ask for her opinion on something related to her work (but not free advice), her hobby, the news, movies, books, etc.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE WORDS IN CONVERSATION

If you have faithfully studied these first three chapters, you will soon notice a marked improvement in your ability to get along with people, win friends and goodwill. I mentioned earlier that the famous psychologist, Dr. George Crane, stated, “Words of appreciation are the most powerful force for goodwill on earth.” He now possesses a vocabulary of some of the most powerful thank you words in the English language.

But you will notice that you have improved not only your human relations vocabulary, but also your personality. Your philosophy of life has become more constructive. This is because you are absorbing, and hopefully using, the power of positive words. From now on, make a special effort to add such words to your vocabulary.

You can use this great power of positive words in other ways besides giving compliments. Use it to keep your conversation light-hearted. Avoid talking about failed deals, illnesses and accidents. Talk about the constructive, optimistic and positive side of life.

What is this power of positive words in conversation? It’s just that people instinctively seek the pleasant, avoid the unpleasant. They already have enough problems of their own. When they talk to you, they are looking for an “elevator”. That is why the happy and grateful person is more popular and successful than the one who is always trying to sell us sadness and pessimism, the two things we are never on the market for! This applies to both business and social conversations.

Every time you speak, remember that you are painting a picture of yourself. Make sure the title is not “Bad Luck,” “Gloom,” or “Illness.” Would you like a painting like this in your office or at home?

Cloud Servers Vs VPS Platforms

Cloud computing has taken a new turn with the widespread release of various cloud platforms like Amazon EC2, GoGrid, and others. Cloud computing consists of remotely storing all of a computer’s memory systems and processors. The user logs on to the Internet and retrieves an entire operating system running on a remote system. The advantages are comfort and safety. Users can store their information and projects away from their physical location and access them whenever they need to. Cloud servers differ markedly from traditional virtual private server environments.

A virtual private server, or VPS, is a special type of server created through a process called virtualization. Usually, a server is assigned one task at a time. Servers are the nodes that connect the Internet to each other. Web browsers retrieve the pages they display from servers. Virtualization effectively creates multiple virtual servers using the same physical machine. A program called a hypervisor is used to interact with each virtual server and keep the others unaware of each other’s existence. Virtualization increases server productivity at the risk of overloading memory and processing power. Each server has limits that can be reached through virtualization.

Cloud computing can use virtual private server platforms, but this creates several problems. Firstly, the hypervisor can keep each server separate, but the unfortunate result is that VPS platforms tend to be overbooked. This leads to resource misallocation which can cause server crashes and memory failures. The worst case scenario is complete data loss from such a situation. Cloud servers that do not use virtualization perform much better because their resources are dedicated to one user at a time. That being said, some forms of virtualization can mimic traditional servers in terms of performance.

Cloud servers provide a dedicated central processing unit (CPU) allocation along with dedicated memory. Cloud servers are almost never oversold. One hidden benefit is that many servers allow users to gain additional unused CPU cycles. Combining virtualization with cloud servers can yield some interesting benefits. Virtualization allows a user to launch a new server instance from any server already in their account. Storing sensitive data is also easier since the storage is on the host server. Data is retained in the event of an unexpected malfunction, such as a server crash, so data can be recovered once the server comes back online.

Some hosting companies are able to accomplish this through their unique implementations of a hypervisor program. Open source applications are becoming much more popular as users and businesses look to reduce borrowing costs. Open source hypervisors often lend themselves to unique interpretations. Virtualization combined with cloud server technology is opening the door to a new era. The way servers are used will change as cloud computing begins to catch on, despite lingering security concerns. Cloud servers free a business or consumer from staying in a physical location.

Subscriber and growth figures may also be of interest. It is often worth following trends as an aid in making your choice. In 2006, 1 million new subscribers joined Dish Network, bringing its total number of subscribers to over 12 million. DirecTV couldn’t match Dish Network in adding about 0.7 million subscribers in the same period.

Having researched this article and at the time of writing, it is clear that while DirecTV is a good product, it cannot compete with Dish Network. But it’s really up to you, the buyer, to make that decision and your decision may depend on what the respective system retailers offer you.

It’s also why you need to be quick once you’ve decided what to buy. Promo codes, money-back guarantee, and nationwide installation are three prerequisites you need to consider in a deal. The recommendation here is to go to a comparison website for the best DirecTV and Dish Network Satellite TV deals, especially to find a retailer with nationwide installation and a money-back guarantee.

Presentation Skill and the CEO – Learning from Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is in a class by himself, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a lot to teach those looking to boost their presentation and public speaking skills. The Apple CEO, back from a health sabbatical that he reluctantly revealed involved a liver transplant, took the stage for the company’s keynote address. It was a tremendously enthusiastic crowd and once again it did not disappoint. “I’m upright, back at Apple and loving every minute of it,” he said, to loud applause.

Apple, the company, is strong, but Jobs’s reputation for first-class presentations is beyond the reach of stocks. His reputation on stage isn’t necessarily a reflection of the overall strength of Apple’s communications, either. In fact, many wondered if the dynamic and famous private CEO hadn’t identified too much with his company, as stock prices plummeted when news of his illness finally leaked.

So if it’s not Apple’s general communications that are primarily responsible for his reputation, or if they’re not based solely on the company’s own performance, what’s behind Jobs’ unrivaled reputation as a dynamic presenter and spokesperson for the Apple brand? ? And is there anything about that performance that other executives can learn from?

In fact, there are a number of skills that Jobs puts to use on behalf of his company that other executives can learn from; Skills that aren’t unique to Jobs himself, but that every great presenter can lean on. These include:

1. Be a storyteller.

Six of the most powerful words assembled in the English language are “Let me tell you a story.” Here we are, gathered to listen to what we assume will be another boring presentation on the company’s balance sheets with little connection to our own results, and suddenly we’re fascinated. A story, you say? Right or left brain, we are attracted. Do that story about where we’ve been as a company, group or organization, and where we’re going, and we’ll be blown away. Make it inspirational about what we are prepared to achieve if we put our minds to it, and it will be repeated and used over and over again to convince others.

2. Level up.

Don’t confuse presentations with meetings. When presenting, do it “above the clouds,” not from below into the weeds. Stay away from the small details and minutiae of decision making. This is not the time for a detailed description of options rejected down the road, ledgers and balance sheets, numbers and graphs that require detailed analysis and time for consideration. This is a medium for the broad outlines and background against which your audience will consider the details. Anytime you’re tempted to say “let me show you some details of what that means,” ask yourself if your audience really needs to go there with you.

3. Know your strengths.

Steve Jobs doesn’t have to feign enthusiasm for I-tunes or I-phone apps. Observing him is understanding and becoming infected with his passion for his products. Too many executives stand in front of others presenting ideas that don’t move them because “someone had to.” The problem is that your audience notices the disconnect between the product, service, or finding you’re promoting and their own involvement in it. The lesson here is to understand, follow, and demonstrate your strengths to others. Play towards your own passions and you won’t have to feign enthusiasm for your audience either.

4. Show your professionalism.

The kind of presentation performance that influences minds and lifts spirits doesn’t happen by accident. Take the time you need to practice and polish. It doesn’t have to be perfect (Jobs has had his share of mishaps and technical errors). It has to look like you know what you’re talking about and have given a lot of thought to how to communicate these ideas to others. That means never “flying away” when people spend their time listening to and viewing your presentation.

5. Show yourself.

Don’t hide behind data or visual aids. Keep it simple and take center stage in your presentations. The real reason people spend their time and attention to see you perform in person is to get something they couldn’t get on paper. Give them a peek “behind the curtain”, allowing your personality to show. Yes, you will be judged, but that is the point. Your audience has no other way to assess your leaders and determine if what they see with their own eyes matches their reputation. By showing confidence, command, and your own personality, you can cement that hard-earned reputation in their eyes.

Recognize the importance of your speeches and presentations in your executive portfolio. Take the communication challenge and become the best communicator in your class in your own right.

Learning to fly: you will never forget your first solo flight

There are many milestones along the way to achieving the wings of your private pilot, but the one you will remember vividly is your first solo. Ask any pilot about his and he or she will probably look longingly into the distance to remember the moment he first flew and the plane on his behalf. Even veterans with many hours in their logs never forget the day their instructor let them lose for the first time.

The first solo represents a transition between those who can only fly under the watchful eye of an instructor and those who have sufficient knowledge and skill to fly without assistance. Of course, there is much more to it than that and your instructor will still keep a close eye on you, albeit from the ground instead of the seat next to or behind you!

What is the first solo flight?

Your first flight as pilot in command will be a circuit of the airfield. The course (or pattern in the US) is an imaginary rectangle consisting of the runway, the windward leg (the part flown just after takeoff while climbing to course height), the crosswind leg (at right angles to the left of the runway), the downwind leg (parallel to the runway but in the opposite direction of takeoff and landing), the base leg (opposite the crosswind leg) and final approach, that is, the section in which it lines up and descends in preparation for landing. That’s it: take off, fly a circuit and land.

It may seem complicated now if you are a novice student with no hours in your log book, but like all things, it gets easier with practice. Your first 10 to 20 hours of flight training will include handling aircraft in the air, climbs, descent turns, radio calls within the vicinity of the airfield, takeoffs and landings. Once you’ve mastered basic aircraft handling, your instructor will spend several lessons with you around the circuit, teaching you how to fly each leg. He’ll learn what to check on each leg, what radio calls to make, and when to make them.

You’ll also learn to recognize familiar landmarks around the airfield, as it can be surprisingly easy to become disoriented without this knowledge and it will make the experience much less stressful in the unlikely event that the Control Tower asks you to orbit. a particular point to make way for another aircraft. There is little chance of this happening as your instructor should have chosen a time when the airfield is relatively quiet and informed the Tower that you are a student about your first solo flight, but if it does happen then be prepared it will. help you carry out Tower instructions with minimal disruption to your flight.

So when should you first fly solo and how can you prepare for it? Rest assured, your instructor won’t send it out on its own until he’s reasonably sure it’s ready. The day will come when both of you have been in the plane “hitting the loop,” that is, flying one loop after the other until the entire process, from takeoff to landing, is burned into your brain and reflexes through repetition. constant. You may even get a little bored with this practice, and the astute instructor will notice this boredom and take it as a sign that it’s time for you to fly on your own.

My first solo was on July 4, 1985 at Southampton Airport (EGHI) in a Grumman AA5-A, registration G-BFTE. All previous lessons focused on repeatedly flying the circuit until all the steps became familiar. During these practice sessions I had landed the aircraft several times without the intervention of the instructor at my side. I knew that one day soon, during such a lesson, he would ask me to taxi to the apron and park while he exited the plane and gave me the go-ahead to fly a circuit on my own. That particular day we flew some circuits and he told me to park in front of the Tower. Half of me hoped the lesson was over and the other half knew what was coming. Once the aircraft was parked, he opened the canopy and stepped out onto the wing. He leaned into the booth and said, “Right. One circuit only, then back here. go away.”

Before she had time to protest, he had closed the canopy and left without looking back. I was alone on the plane. I radioed the Tower”,Southampton Tower, Golf Bravo Foxtrot Tango Echo, radio control and taxi to the winery.” The approval was given without pause. I was on my way. He taxied to the holding point, I ran my eyes over the instrument panel and he gave another call to say he was ready to take off. A few seconds later the plane I was picking up speed along the track and soon I was airborne.

The first thing that struck me was that the plane was lighter and handled differently, and of course, this was due to the fact that there was one less adult in the seat on the right. With all the things to focus on, the next few minutes flew by. I didn’t really settle down and analyze the event until I was in the downwind leg where there was a minute or two where I could absorb the fact that I was flying on my own. I barely started to congratulate myself when I realized that I had to prepare for the landing. Radio calls and pre-landing checks followed and within a minute or two I was looking down the length of the runway concentrating on airspeed, altitude and the position of the aircraft hood in relation to the end of the runway.

My instructor’s voice was in my head guiding me down. Now I understood why we repeat this exercise so often and under different conditions. I made small adjustments where necessary and it wasn’t long before I felt the thump of the main wheels touching the track. Once the nose wheel was down as well, I smoothly applied braking and taxied back to the pad to park. With all post-landing checks completed and the aircraft shut down, I left and walked across the apron to the main terminal building. My knees were shaking a little but with each step I was growing a foot taller. When I got to the building I was beaming.

That was twenty-five years ago. You never forget your first solo!

Friend, friendly acquaintance or just an acquaintance?

How many times have you heard someone refer to another person as their friend and wondered how close the two people really were? What makes someone a friend instead of a friendly acquaintance instead of just an acquaintance?

We all come into contact with a wide variety of individuals in the course of a regular routine. In my case, I would say that I have many acquaintances, several friendly acquaintances, but only a handful of individuals that I would really consider friends. Of course, my definition and the requirements to be considered a friend may be somewhat stricter than many others. I consider someone a friend only if, over a period of time, they have shown that they really care about me and that I really care about them. A friend doesn’t always necessarily agree with everything you do, but friendship means that two people can openly discuss the reason for disagreement. A friend is someone who is there for you when things are not going so well, as well as when they could be. A friend is still a friend regardless of whether he has any “advantages” to offer, whether he has power or not, whether he is popular with others or not. Friendship is tested over time and remains regardless of how often you may actually be in contact with the other person.

On the other hand, a friendly acquaintance is someone you know and get along with. They exchange pleasantries, occasionally they can do things together, but the kinship necessary to be considered a friend does not exist at the moment. However, it is quite possible that someone who is currently a friendly acquaintance could become a true friend at some point in the future.

However, the vast majority of people we come into contact with are actually acquaintances. It’s not simply a measure of how long you’ve known someone, or if you come in contact frequently, or even if you socialize in a group setting with the other person. From time to time, an acquaintance may, in time, become your friend, but friendship must be shown.

I’m always surprised when I go to a wedding or a Bar Mitzvah, and there are so many “friends” involved. The reality is that guests at these kinds of social gatherings consist of family, business contacts, obligations, acquaintances, friendly acquaintances, and “peer pressure invitees.” Why do so many people think that it is necessary to affirm and believe that they have so many good friends?

Most of us are lucky to have true friends on our fingers and toes. Many of us don’t need to take off our shoes to tell our friends. The reality is that it is better to have a handful of truly good friends than numerous acquaintances. Unfortunately, most people don’t learn that until something bad happens in their life, and then they get to witness which friend stays true and is “there for them,” almost wholeheartedly. I’d rather have ten good friends than hundreds, or even thousands of acquaintances. While, in business, our sphere of influence and acquaintances can be helpful, in our personal lives, friendship is much more important.
