Gluten Free Recipes – What 10 Grains Can Be Substituted For Wheat?

Gluten-free recipes can be challenging, and looking at all the grain containers at the health food store can be intimidating. Whether you have celiac disease, a gluten intolerance, wheat allergies, or choose to follow a gluten-free diet, you need to know not only which grains have gluten, but also which grains are gluten-free and can be substituted.

Here’s a list of 10 gluten-free grains with a little information on each.

  1. Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) – a small grain that was a staple food of the Aztecs. Cortez had anyone who cultivated this crop executed when he tried to wipe out this civilization. It has a mild peppery flavor. The protein is relatively high at 13%-14% and contains lysine which is an amino acid to make this a complete protein. It is a pseudo-grain like buckwheat and quinoa. It is often cooked as a cereal similar to oatmeal, in sweet or savory dishes, as a side dish, salad, crackers, even pancakes, and popped like popcorn (in a smaller size).
  2. Buckwheat (Fagopyrum Esculentum) – is not wheat but a fruit seed related to the rhubarb plant. It contains rutin that helps strengthen capillary walls and is being studied for its ability to lower blood pressure. Deep nutty flavor and delicious with sweeter vegetables like carrots, parsnips and caramelized onions. The name is recognized here with buckwheat pancakes, but you may not know that crepes from Brittany, kasha from Russia, and soba noodles from Japan are all made from buckwheat.
  3. Corn – (Zea Mays) is really a grain, not a vegetable. Think cornmeal, cornmeal, corn tortillas, polenta, and cornbread. A different variety called sweet corn for corn on the cob as a vegetable and of course there is another variety called popcorn. Traditional in Latin cuisine, the corn is treated with alkali for masa flour. This releases the niacin in the corn to help those who depend on this grain as a staple food avoid pellagra (a deficiency of niacin or B3) which affects the skin, digestive system, and nervous system. Eating corn with beans creates a mixture of amino acids that increases the value of protein for humans. Research shows that corn has the highest level of antioxidants of any grain or vegetable and is about twice as high as apples.
  4. Darling (Panicum Miliaceum) – a tiny grain, high in magnesium that supports nerves and muscles. Cultivated for thousands of years and popular in many diets around the world. The leading staple grain in India, common in China, South America, Russia and the Himalayas. Now it’s becoming popular in the US, and not just as bird food. A light touch of corn flavor with a herbaceous touch like quinoa.
  5. oatmeal (Avena Sativa) – Naturally gluten free, but is often stored with wheat and therefore contaminated with gluten. Know where your oats come from to be safe. Oats rarely have the bran and germ removed during processing, which makes them somewhat unique. Studies show that oats have beta-glucan that helps lower cholesterol and has an antioxidant called avenanthramides that helps protect blood vessels from damage caused by LDL (lousy) cholesterol.
  6. Rice (Oryza Sativa) – White rice is refined, which means that the bran and germ have been removed. Converted rice is parboiled before being refined. This process pushes some of the B vitamins into the endosperm so they are not lost when the bran is extracted. This means that converted rice is a healthier option than white rice, but it still lacks some of the nutrients found in brown rice. Brown rice has less fiber than most whole grains, but it is rich in many nutrients. Brown rice is always brown, as is black rice, red rice, and other colors except white. Rice is one of the easiest grains to digest, which makes it most often recommended as a baby’s first solid food. It is also ideal for many people on a restricted diet and/or gluten intolerant.
  7. quinoa (Chenopodium Quinoa) (keen-wah) – a small seed from South America cultivated for centuries in the Andes by the Incas. Highly appreciated for its high protein content. It comes in different varieties: white, purple, red and black and as a blend. White is softer and resembles sesame seeds. They all have an earthy flavor with a slight grassy or herbal flavor. This seed is naturally coated with saponin which gives it a bitter taste to prevent insects and birds from eating it. Most packaged quinoas have already had this coating removed, but you can still find recipes that tell you to rinse them to remove the bitter taste.
  8. Sorghum or Milo (Sorghum spp.) – Originated in Africa around 8000 BC. This is the third most important crop here in America and the fifth in the world. A smoother flour texture than rice flour for baking. Baked goods have a smoother, non-gritty texture.
  9. teff (Eragrostis Tef)- Another ancient grain originating from Africa and the main source of nutrition for about 2/3 of Ethiopians. Prepared as injera (a fluffy flatbread) it is 100% teff. These kernels are very small (about 1/150 of a wheat kernel) reddish-brown to ivory in color. Ivory has a milder flavor. High in calcium and vitamin C. It has a smooth texture that melts in the mouth when cooked.
  10. wild rice (Zizania SPP.) – Is actually a grass (an aquatic herb) and the only grain native to North America. Even today it is harvested by hand in canoes in the Great Lakes area of the US, by American Indians primarily in Minnesota. Today it is grown primarily in the wild and now also as a cultivated crop in California, Oregon, and the Midwest. Wild rice has a distinctive nutty flavor and takes longer to cook than white rice and remains chewy. It is often paired with brown rice.

Hopefully, this information on 10 gluten-free grains will open your eyes to new grains and flavors that you can substitute in your gluten-free recipes. Pay attention to your seasonings too. Use gluten-free seasonings, as you may not be aware that many seasoning mixes have added gluten.

Homeschool Recordkeeping Reminders

Course descriptions are an important part of your homeschool student’s high school records, because they give colleges a great picture of what their homeschooling was like. Good record keeping is key to create those course descriptions. If you don’t keep good records, it will be hard to remember what he did, especially if you have multiple children. Use your records like the tools they are, and your course descriptions will be a breeze!

It is particularly easy to write a course description if you are using a textbook. Keep a photocopy of the book cover and table of contents, and you can create a complete course description with just that information. Another nice thing about using textbooks is that if you visit the publisher’s website or catalog, they often have course descriptions there, already written for you.

For a very easy course description experience, keep track of everything what you do is educational and use it to help you write your course descriptions. If you go to a museum, put the receipt in your records folder (or however you keep your records). If your student creates a sculpture, please take a photograph and keep it for your records. Every time you do something or go somewhere educational, figure out where you fit in and keep a record of it.

Of course, you don’t need to save everything! Your child will take a lot of tests and write a lot of papers, but he doesn’t have to keep all of them. Just keep the ones that are out of the ordinary, special, or a good performance, and include them with your records.

It is important to remember that record keeping is not a scrap stock! Those pretty pictures you took of the state fair should be kept in your scrapbook and not in your registry. If you have a tall football trophy from when your child was in fifth grade and won the Most Inspirational Student award, please don’t include it! That is a keepsake and not a part of your record keeping. Put away things that are academic in nature or things that are high school level.

don’t forget thatIt is relatively common for homeschool students to do high school level material. when they are younger. If, for example, your high school student is studying Algebra right now, be sure to keep some Algebra records even if they are not yet in ninth grade. It’s academic and it’s high school level, so it’s on the record!

Tips for potty training adult dogs

Potty training a dog is the process of teaching your dog to relieve himself wherever you want. If you don’t want to be busy picking up piles and removing dog urine stains from the carpet, you need to potty train him. You need to give your dog freedom outside or in your apartment where he can relieve himself naturally and you don’t have to worry about the mess.

In this article, we will discuss different aspects of potty training adult dogs.

Dog potty training with crate

The most effective method of potty training dogs involves the use of a crate. The dog is an intelligent and clean animal. They prefer to keep the place where they sleep clean.

After the first 2 weeks of training, your dog will learn what is expected of him in terms of bathroom habits. Your dog should go to the crate to rest, please use the designated potty spot.

What do you need to know to potty train a puppy in a crate?

1. The size of the cage should not be large enough that the dog can sleep on one side and urinate on the other side.
2. The crate should not be so small that your puppy will be uncomfortable entering it.

How to train a dog to go to the bathroom without a cage

Dog potty training without a crate is difficult. Initially, there will be few instances of accidents and you should be ready to clean up the mess without any physical punishment for your dog.

Important tips on dog training

1. You must be in contact with your dog throughout the day

2. You must recognize the signs that your dog needs to use the bathroom so that you can immediately take the puppy to the place where you want him to go to the bathroom, give him the command and praise his successes. Always use the same command as “go pee” and don’t play with it that time.

Toilet training with papers

If you have a small breed dog, you can use potty training paper. Useful only if you stay in a high-rise apartment and can’t take your dog out to go to the bathroom.

Are you a dog owner facing challenges in potty training your puppy?

Bowflex for baby boomers

There are hundreds and maybe thousands of fitness gurus claiming to have the perfect answer, the “magic bullet” for fitness and a solution for a healthier body and lifestyle. Well, I’m not going to pretend to have the perfect answer! However, I do have some tips on easy-to-use exercise equipment that may be some of the best for all ages and is particularly suitable for those of us who are baby boomers or a little more experienced. It’s the Bowflex… any version, but a basic machine like the Bowflex Sport is a perfect place to start.

So what’s the catch here? Absolutely no cheating at all… just an enthusiasm to share some thoughts on perhaps one of the most efficient, versatile and affordable exercise machines available for home use. The Bowflex combines aerobic exercise and strength training with a smooth pulley and power bar resistance system that’s easy to set up. You can easily change the resistance with the power bars through a wide range of motion for a complete aerobic and strength workout. Now don’t get me wrong on the expected results. Bowflex ads feature muscular, smiling young men who we would all like to look like, regardless of age. Well now maybe you just want to regain some muscle tone and some of that past strength and endurance you once had. In any case, here we are with 55, 60, 65+ and AARP card holders. Most of us simply want to maintain or improve our strength, muscle tone, and respiratory efficiency. Today many doctors and fitness experts advocate weight training and especially the use of free weights as we age. Everyone now recognizes that maintaining and/or building our strength is critical in later years. Sure, we’ll function with increased confidence and renewed strength, but we’ll also be less likely to fall, and if we do, less likely to break, since strength training increases our bone mass. What we don’t hear about too often is the potential for injury with free weights if not properly supervised. In addition to the potential for injury, there is also a need for other equipment, such as multiple benches and racks, to get a full range of activities with free weights.

So, let’s talk about the Bowflex. Perhaps you’ve seen the infomercials and watched the group of muscular young men and women gather around a Bowflex machine and marvel at how easy it works and the quality of the workout it provides. So how does this apply to you…at age 55, 60, 65 or older?

First, you can use Bowflex safely without the need for a partner. However, before starting a program, check with your doctor to make sure you don’t have physical ailments that prevent vigorous exercise. The Bowflex is a home device, and since it is in your home, it is available at any time. I must warn you about the “now you can use it anytime you choose” hype. That may be correct, but to be successful you need to set a consistent time each day for your workout. Once you start failing or changing timings, you’re in real danger of skipping days and then a week or more and then all of a sudden you don’t have a set schedule and you’re back to being a couch potato.

The Bowflex machine comes with a very good exercise and instruction manual and most will also have an instructional DVD. Let’s go over some real-world Bowflex 101 and set some realistic goals and easy-to-follow instructions:

1.Keep a set schedule, either daily or every other day. Many prefer exercise routines early in the morning so they don’t get canceled later in the day by unexpected events…or loss of willpower. Early workouts also tend to set a positive go-for-it attitude when those endorphins kick in after a good long vigorous workout. Many experts say that the most effective time for the body to exercise is mid-afternoon and the least effective is at night. Exercising late into the night can also cause some sleep disruption.

2. Review the exercise manual provided by Bowflex but don’t become a slave to the routines described. Although the programs were developed by experts, let your own sense of what works be your guide.

3.After reviewing the manual, establish your initial program routine and stick to it for at least two full weeks or more without deviating. Maintaining a consistent pattern will allow you to assess whether the program you have selected is comfortable for you and not too boring. It is important to make training interesting and challenging. Boredom can cause you to drop out of school, so don’t let that happen!

4. Design your program to include aerobic and strength exercises. While Bowflex will go a long way in building strength, aerobics are fantastic and important.

5. Start with easy resistance power rods. Remember, this is going to be a lifestyle addition and not a quick fix, so there’s no reason to use too much weight resistance at first. It is best to get comfortable with the operation of the Bowflex using a lower resistance and then gradually increase the weight/resistance.

6. Don’t feel obligated to “do the manual.” Select the exercises that work well with your strength and flexibility and rotate through them. However, be sure to balance your upper body, arms, legs, and abs in your program.

7.Make sure you take advantage of the aerobic rowing motion. The seat slides easily and the resistance power rods and pulleys are exceptionally smooth.

8. Get creative! In no time, you’ll be totally at ease and able to handle any of the Bowflex routines. When that happens, you’ll be ready to mix and match and create new routines on your own.

So while this is an exercise machine for all ages, the Bowflex, in my experience, is exceptionally well-suited for the great generation of Baby Boomers and beyond. Its simplicity of setup, easy process of switching from one workout routine to another, wide range of weight resistance, and easy, fluid motion give this machine an A++ rating in my book. While this is not an advertisement, you may want to check out the Bowflex website or other websites that offer exercise equipment. In any case, start with a healthier lifestyle.

Be active, be healthy and be happy!

Ways to Cut Sugar During Passover – Candy Comparisons for Better Choices

Growing up, Easter was always a time of excitement. Not only did we get a new hat or a new outfit (to go to church), but it was the only time of year we got candy. We lived in the desert, so trick-or-treating on Halloween was not on the program. Finding the eggs was a lot of fun, although I don’t remember being that fond of hard-boiled eggs, even if they were well colored.

These days it doesn’t seem like most kids limit their sweets to just Easter, but there are a few ways to minimize excess Easter sugar. One is to buy smaller Easter baskets. Another is to fill those baskets with little toys, movie tickets to your next favorite movie, miniature books, bookmarks, or gadgets that take the place of all that candy.

You might consider persuading your children that you want to do a historical Easter celebration. Chocolate eggs actually date back to the early 19th century, when monks used to distribute sweet yeast buns to children. You can buy dark chocolate bunnies instead of milk chocolate to cut down on the sugar a bit. A milk chocolate bunny weighing about 1.2 ounces has 170 calories, 10 grams of fat and 19 grams of sugar.

An old tradition that you can combine with the new one is to buy yogurt-covered pretzels with the same fruit flavors as the jelly beans, including strawberry and blueberry. (Studies show that cherry, strawberry, and grape are the best flavors for gummy bears.) Yogurt pretzels are colorful and not made from solid sugar. In fact, 7 pretzels are about 130 calories, but they have about 11 grams of sugar and about 6 grams of fat. In the old days, twisted pretzels were said to resemble someone’s folded arms in prayer. Not a bad way to remind children of the religious significance of the holiday.

Originating in the Civil War era, jelly beans are a must, of course. I admitted that I liked the licorice ones better. But having done some research on licorice, I would limit a child’s intake of that flavor. If you’ve filled the basket with other gifts, you don’t need to go too crazy with these sugar-filled, but “required” items. Because they are so small, the damage is much less. Luckily, the gummies are fat-free. You have to eat 41 jelly beans to equal 170 calories with 31 grams of sugar.

Even as a kid, I didn’t find Peeps appetizing. I was never a fan of the flavor or consistency of marshmallows and preferred solid chocolate bunnies. Look for the smallest size possible and buy the minimum. The same can be said for chocolate eggs with marshmallow inside. Each Peep has 29 grams of sugar and 130 calories. Each egg weighs about an ounce and has 110 calories with 14 grams of sugar.

Robin’s eggs are balls of malted milk with a sugar coating. Eight robin eggs have a little more sugar than a single cream egg, which can be very tricky. An Egg Crème has 25 grams of sugar, 6 grams of fat, and 170 calories.

Hopefully, this information will help you make a more informed decision about what kind of candy to buy for your child’s Easter basket. Read the labels on what you buy and try to limit how much your child can eat at one time. More and more studies conclude that sugar is addictive and harmful. As a parent, it’s up to you to lead by example and help your kids moderate their sugar intake.

raise a beagle in an apartment

Have you brought a Beagle to your apartment? Read on to learn the best way to ease the adjustment period, as well as the essential training you need to provide for your Beagle.

If you thought raising a Beagle in an apartment was boring and methodical, think again. It takes some time for both the dog and its owner to get used to each other. Once an agreement is reached, the Beagle becomes part of the household. He understands how to fit in with other members, follow directions, and demonstrate unusual abilities.

Can a beagle really adapt?

A Beagle is a bloodhound, although smaller in size. You will wait too long if you think the dog will remain calm and quiet in an apartment without enough exercise. Simply put, the more you take the dog out, the happier he stays, which leads to a calm demeanor. Many people have the feeling that a Beagle cannot be raised in an apartment. The truth is that the dog is adjustable but needs to be a part of your home.

A defined hierarchy must be created in the apartment. For example, you become the Alpha leader of the Beagle. Your family members fit into different parts of the hierarchy according to a pattern created in the early stages. In his absence, family members in different hierarchical order may demand obedience from the dog. It is a natural phenomenon and must be encouraged. The Beagle is adorable and peaceful and will not disturb the harmony. It has a high-pitched howl that can be disturbing at times. Exercising the dog regularly also solves the howling problem.

Training the dog to bark only when necessary

Beagles have a natural inclination to bark like a hunting dog. You just can’t expect the dog to be quiet all the time. If there is a disturbance, he barks to get your attention as a leader. If he can’t establish himself as the Alpha leader, the dog does whatever it takes to get rid of the disturbance. In most cases, the Beagle will bark incessantly until he feels the problem is resolved. The secret to keeping a Beagle in an apartment is to take charge.

Train the Beagle to instinctively follow various non-verbal commands. The dog adapts to the leash more easily when he is a puppy. He learns to chew dog bones and leaves expensive household items alone. Crate training, diet plans, obedience training, and curbing the chasing habit come with practice. The Beagle is truly an outdoor dog and will show resentment if he is kept indoors for too long. Therefore, raising a Beagle indoors becomes easier if you take the dog out for walks at least three times a day.

A beagle is small enough for an apartment.

Beagles are small enough to fit into an apartment in terms of size. They can run and play as long as there is enough space available. Some apartments are larger than others and give the dog more space. Basic requirements such as a permanent place to eat or rest in a cage must be met in the case of a Beagle. If you don’t mind the dog running and jumping over the bed sometimes, you have a pet that doesn’t need motivation to dedicate itself to you and yours. The Beagle in an apartment is a loyal dog and will bring excitement and joy to everyone he meets.

15 things children want from their parents

15 things children want from their parents

Although it may seem like it, children are not too complicated. Very few things are asked of us in their early years; however, these requests are essential to help them grow into kind and respectful additions to society.

As parents, there are 15 main things that children will want from you as much as possible. If you can do your best to provide these things to the best of your ability, your child’s future will be brighter than ever.

Here are the top 15 things kids want from their parents:

1. Good night

Going to bed is much better when parents spend quality time with their children. Take time out of your day to tuck them in, sing them a song, or read them a bedtime story.

If you don’t have any books, you might consider making up a story yourself or telling them about your childhood. Children are very receptive to parents who also use their imaginations!

2. affection

The display of affection is one of the essential experiences that children have during their growth. Parents should always remember to give plenty of praise, cuddles, and love, even after a long day.

Even a friendly one-on-one conversation can go a long way for a child who wants to be heard. Share some time asking your child about his day and what he enjoyed most.

3. Private time

Having a good connection with your children means giving them your full and undivided attention as much as you can. Children will benefit from feeling that their time is valued, especially if it is planned and not rushed.

With more than one child, it is essential to give each one their time with you. It’s hard to connect when there’s a lot of hustle and bustle, so let them pick a place and an activity you can enjoy together.

4. Advocates of positive eating

Lots of kids are picky eaters, but that’s no reason to throw in the towel and serve pizza every night. Children need to learn that healthy foods can also be delicious and satisfying, and that starts at home in the kitchen.

Work on meals together, or even help them grow some vegetables in the garden. Kids need to learn early on that dessert isn’t the only delicious food, so they’re set up for long-term success.

5. Plans to wait

Show your children that you love spending time with them and offer them fun things that they crave with you. You can plan fun events on the weekend or surprise them with weekend activities if they’ve been good.

Showing your kids that you’re excited about quality time will make them feel good about themselves and their relationship with you.

6. Conversations before bed

Bedtime means winding down, but it’s also a great time to tap into beneficial conversations. Set aside time before bed to talk about your day, your friends, or whatever else comes to mind.

Let them lead the conversation; Children like to feel heard.

7. Time to play outside

Studies have shown how beneficial and vital outdoor play can be for children. Not just kids, either; People of all ages benefit from being outdoors!

Encourage children to stay away from screens and televisions and explore the outside world instead. Let them spend as much time outdoors as they like, whether it’s playing, walking, or socializing with the neighborhood kids.

8. Time to watch your favorite show

The only thing better than watching your favorite show is watching it with a loved one! Grab a blanket and curl up for a good cuddle while your child enjoys his favorite shows.

You can let this be a quiet time, or you can ask them questions to engage them.

9. Discipline when necessary

Children need guidance when it comes to learning about appropriate behaviors and responses. Showing discipline may not be a parent’s favorite thing to do, but it teaches a child that you care about them and want what’s best for them.

Even if they don’t show it, children find value in being disciplined.

10. Leave special messages

Surprises are always nice, even if it’s a little note or a ‘just because’ gift. Consider putting notes in your child’s lunch bag or backpack, especially if he’s having a rough day.

Having that little joy of happiness is always lovely when it’s unexpected.

11. Being silly

Sometimes kids look for approval to goof around, but the best way to give them permission is for parents to goof around themselves.

Playing dress-up with your children and acting out stories will help them come out of their shells and work on their imaginations. Children can be tremendously creative when they don’t feel like they have to hold back or act in a certain way.

Surprise them with costumes, crafts, or a pillow fight! The options are endless.

12. To be less stressed

Surprisingly, children are very observant and receptive. They often notice when their parents are stressed or upset, and it affects them too.

Many children want to see their parents happy and relaxed, which in turn makes them feel more positive as well. Regardless of what’s bothering you, try to keep things simple.

If you’re short on time, don’t feel bad about ordering dinner. If the house is messy, invite your kids to help you get things done faster. Don’t let anything take longer than it should; work together now, play together later.

13. Playdates

Adult time is fun, but it can also be beneficial for everyone to have playdates with other parents! The kids can socialize together or they can hang out with the adults and get comfortable with their friends.

14. Orientation

Children don’t have all the answers; in fact, adults rarely have them all! However, children will look to their parents for guidance in all kinds of situations.

They may seek you out when they meet a stranger, face a new experience, or are unsure how to express their feelings. If you have established a level of trust in your relationship, your child will feel safe enough for you to point him in the right direction.

15. Approval

Parents sometimes don’t realize it, but their children always seek their approval for all sorts of things. More than anything, they want to make their parents proud!

Be on the lookout for opportunities to stand up for them, even if it’s the smallest achievement. Doing so can increase their self-confidence and their willingness to try new things.

Essential things to keep in mind

Parenting is hard and covering all these things every day is not always possible. However, keep these 15 things kids want from their parents in mind and practice them as often as you can.

They will help you build a strong relationship with your children and encourage them to become successful young adults.

A Bedrest Baby Shower: How To Host A Baby Shower For A Bedrest Mom

During my pregnancy I spent 14 weeks on bed rest. It was a long and isolated time. However, I was lucky that my doctor took me off bed rest a couple of months before my son was born. However, this is not the case for most moms who are on bed rest. So how do you host a baby shower for a bedridden mom?

There are many ways to do this, depending on the level of restrictions the new mom has. The first thing to do is find out what the limitations of it are. Also find out if she wants to shower now or would prefer to wait until after the baby is born.

If the mom-to-be is feeling sick or the baby may not survive, consider postponing the shower until after the baby is born. Otherwise, she can find a way to shower him and still comply with her restrictions.

Some moms who are on bed rest don’t have many restrictions. The doctor just doesn’t want them active. If mom can travel well and she’s not supposed to be active, you can give her a pretty normal shower with just a few modifications.

  • Choose a place that is close to your home.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you.
  • Make sure there is a nice, comfortable place where you can sit or lie down. It should be right in the middle of everything, not in a back room. Designate a sofa for her or a comfortable recliner and make it a seat of honor.
  • Make sure you have a place to put snacks and drinks and that someone is in charge of making sure you have everything you need.
  • Keep the party in the same room as her. It’s okay to have snacks and drinks in another room, but encourage people to stay in the main room so the new mom can be a part of it all.
  • Keep the party short. Most moms who have been on bed rest get tired faster than normal. Keep the shower to 1 or 2 hours so you don’t get too tired. It can probably give you a good idea of what his stamina is like these days.
  • Find out if mom has dietary restrictions. If she does, try to prepare foods that she can eat and enjoy.
  • If you’re playing games, consider paper-and-pencil games or other things the new mom can participate in, or skip the games altogether and let her enjoy time with her friends.
  • Have a designated helper be in charge of delivering the new mom her gifts and then, once they’re unwrapped, hide them away from her. Too much bending down to receive gifts and leaving them is a very bad idea for a bedridden mother.
  • If people don’t know she’s on bed rest, you might want to include a little note in the envelope with the invitation to let guests know she’s on bed rest and has some restrictions, but is looking forward to seeing them. . .
  • Ask the new mom to clean the shower with the doctor. Most doctors recognize the importance of these events and will tell you what is okay and what is not. Then everyone can rest easy knowing that she is safe.

If the new mom can’t travel, you’ll need to host the baby shower at her home. It would look a lot like the shower discussed above, with a few more things to consider.

  • Make sure the new mom can go to bed during the party, without leaving the room. If she can’t travel, her doctor probably won’t want her to sit for long either.
  • Arrange for someone to clean your house thoroughly before you shower. Remember, she CANNOT clean it. You don’t want her to stress about having guests over when her house looks less than the best. Plus, you’ll love having her house nice and clean.
  • Make sure you leave the house totally clean, all trash is clean, and it looks as good or better than it did before you arrived. Bed rest is stressful for the whole family, don’t leave a mess for your husband to clean up, he probably already has his hands full trying to keep up with daily life.

Sometimes a new mom can’t stand having guests around her, she’s in the hospital, or for some other reason, she can’t be in the shower. If that’s the case, consider throwing a mini pampering shower for mom. Have 2 or 3 close friends get together, give her her gifts and just keep her company. Even most hospitals will allow it. Then, once the baby arrives and you’re home, you can consider throwing him a full baby shower.

The final option would be to take a shower like you would someone out of town. Sometimes a new mom who has been on bed rest (and therefore not working) really needs extra help getting even the basics for baby. If that’s the case, throw her a long-distance baby shower. Use webcams to connect her with everyone and bring her gifts. It’s not the same, but she will make her feel special and help her get what she needs before the baby is born.

Whatever method you choose to organize your shower, make sure it does. Many moms have missed baby showers because they were on bed rest. Don’t let your friend become one of them.
