We usually visit Las Vegas every September, right after Labor Day weekend. The weather is great and we are looking forward to lounging by the pool with cold drinks. We always pick a hotel with the best pool that’s family-friendly and we won’t look dirty taking down our boys. The top 3 options in our family are The MGM Grand, The Monte Carlo and The Mirage.

# 1 The MGM Grand
The MGM Grand has an incredible pool complex. In my opinion, one of the best in Vegas. You feel like you have entered an exotic paradise with lots of lush vegetation, beautiful flowers, fountains and a small island connected with bridges. This massive 6-acre paradise offers 5 pools, 3 hot tubs, and a lazy river. The lazy river was a success for my family. Float under bridges, through waterfalls and into a small waterfall lagoon that is the perfect kiddie pool for babies and toddlers.

I must admit that this paradise has some drawbacks. One of the drawbacks is that you need to rent a tube or raft to really experience the lazy river. I think the rent is $ 15 per meter per day. The MGM Grand is known to offer special promotions where you can get the cheapest, free or 2 for 1 rental. Before reserving your room, you need to visit the coupon websites for MGM (just go to Google and type in coupons MGM Las Vegas on the hunt – Early Vegas is a good idea). The Monte Carlo offers 3 swimming pools, a Jacuzzi and a children’s pool. If you visit Las Vegas with young children, you will love the enclosed children’s pool with children’s beach chairs. The wave pool with 3 foot waves was designed to simulate the ocean and is a blast for the whole family. If you want to take a bath, try the lagoon pool. It is a nice and relaxing square pool with a waterfall. My favorite was the relaxing 400ft Easy River Ride. There is also a rental tube, but you can buy a tube inside your beach shop for around $ 12.00 and the rental store will even blow it up for you. This is a real money saver for large families or for longer stays like us. Once you’re done, why not pass the tube on to a new family?

# 3 The mirage
The Mirage pool is a series of pools connected by bridges and lagoons with waterfalls in a tropical setting. They used to have a waterslide, but much to the disappointment of my children they closed it. They offer raft rental to float, but we never need it. You can request free life jackets for children. The pool is located near the guest elevators, on a small boardwalk with few shops, bistro cafe and ice cream parlor. If you decide to order a drink, take my advice and order a small size. If you don’t specify, they will bring you a great drink at an even higher price.

What the hell are we doing here near Plover, Wisconsin, in the middle of a freezing night? Finally we come to a low building, a blind. And then daylight appears like a helium mylar balloon blown away by a child with greasy fingers. I had missed it, dawn; maybe I fell asleep … I look through the narrow window; there they are! Dozens of them. Prairie chickens! Dancing wildly, horny, moaning madly, revealing all the majesty of her beautiful feathery sexual apparatus!

What a fabulous comical performance! They pull bright orange bags down their throats, drum their paws, dance furiously to attract a mate. Territorial males leap into the air to warn other males, intruders. Then the attraction happens! … A successful male bows to a female. She shakes her ruffled feathers. It’s done. They are married or mated in a non-anthropological language! This is followed by a country breakfast, including thick fries served on a huge deep-sided baking sheet. And meaty things!

This was one of several notable trips he conjured up and took with precious friends, Rob and Susie. All of them unusually different, and all of them memorable and full of strange pleasures in their own unique way. Near Lansing, Iowa, we floated along the Mississippi witnessing great migrations of birds. There were swans and masses of coots, goat meadows, bald eagles, even a mink foraging for food along a winged dam. Before this trip, I had never seen swans in flight. I have never seen so many coots gathered in a single piece of river … (“coots” means birds. Not old men playing checkers in cafes and salons!)

That trip down the Mississippi River may have given us the idea of ​​another. The four of us rented a houseboat in Alma, Wisconsin. I spent one night in a cove. Lit a fire, “Old Man River” blood. Wonderful time. On the second night, after a day hanging around the Great River, past magnificent-looking barge tugs, we stopped on the beach between a couple of side dams. In the middle of the night we were woken up twice, once by a bump, once by a barge slowly being pushed by a brightly lit tugboat, so beautiful in the darkness of the quiet river. The blow was, we thought, a tree branch that had lodged under our houseboat. I couldn’t move the “branch” no matter how hard the four of us tried! It turned out to be a whole tree! He had to call Captain Jack from the charter service and his mighty motorboat. He also couldn’t believe the size of the tree that anchored us to the shoreline. We saw an eagle’s nest so big the four of us could have moved in with kitchen appliances and couches … maybe a fold out bed too!

In Mexico, we discovered a spider monkey reserve near Akumal. The four of us spent over an hour interacting with the monkeys in a large cage-like enclosure. We fed them snacks and they, in turn, collected “artifacts” of our hair and skin (or whatever they found and ate!). What wonderful hairdressers! Inquisitive but almost always gentle (except for a few small tweaks, from time to time). The seafood restaurant was superior. The palapa-protected “Tortuga Beach” was beautiful to behold! The ferry ride to and from Cozumel was dangerous, with huge waves in a raging Caribbean. We all thought we’d sink and drown in the cloudy blue soup! But (maybe you read it in Playa del Carmen’s Because-Fish!), We survived to sail one more day … (Thanksgiving requests to San Telmo …).

Most recently, we traveled to Starved Rock State Park in north central Illinois. A place of magnificent rock formations, waterfalls, streams, and wildlife, including fun-looking tourists. Great hiking trails. Before our arrival, not far from the park, we stopped at Lasalle, near Lock 16, to ride a real canal boat powered by a single mule called “Mo”. By the way, we highly recommend Lock 16 Cafe in that lovely community. Wonderful food, great people! Starved Rock (named for a Native American battle site where the vanquished starved to death outside their stronghold) sits on the banks of the Illinois River. The lodge and cabins are beautiful, cozy, and comfortable. What’s that? Oh sure, we would go back there!

Arrow Lake is located in Glacier National Park. As you drive towards Glacier, you travel through rolling hills only to suddenly see this geological wonder of massive mountains jutting out of the landscape. Known for its pristine forests, alpine lakes and meadows, rugged mountains, and diverse wildlife, Glacier is truly a unique place. I have met people who have traveled the world and still say it is their favorite outdoor place on earth. With over 700 miles of trails, mountains, and lakes, Glacier is an adventurer’s paradise.

The trail to Arrow Lake immediately begins climbing at a moderate pace and continues to the top of the ridge (2.5 miles). There are only a few viewpoints where you can see Lake McDonald. At the top of the ridge there is a sign indicating an old fire lookout. The road to this lookout is old and almost disappeared.

The trail winds through a wide saddle and then descends steeply using curves into Camas Creek Valley. In just over 3 miles, the trail forks, going left toward Rodger Lake and right toward Trout, Arrow, Camas, Evangeline, and Ruger Lakes. Go to the right. An old campground is located 25 miles up the trail along Lake Trout. There is a large traffic jam at Trout Lake that is useful for fishing. Bears cross in this jam too. One of the first recorded deaths of a visitor to the park by a bear occurred at this location. There is no longer a campground at Trout Lake.

The main backcountry camp is located 3.5 miles up the trail at Arrow Lake. This is a small camp with a good food preparation area; bear stick, toilet and 2 hitch rails. The trail to the head of the lake requires a stream crossing at the foot of the lake. There are steps, but they are slippery and some are slightly submerged. The creek is only a foot deep at the crossing and feels good on weary feet.

The trail from Arrow Lake to Camas Lake is well maintained and offers spectacular views. There is a campground at Camas Lake. The food preparation area is very exposed to the wind from the lake. Lake Evangeline and Lake Ruger are further up the valley and require a lot of logging to get to. There are large wet meadows over Lake Camas with lots of elk and deer signs. There are many exposed slopes in this valley and it is a humid place which makes it ideal for berry bushes. This also means that this is serious bear country.

I have written about how observant and supportive members of a house of worship can help meet the needs of a social or civic organization. I want to expand on that topic. At one point, I benefited from the fact that our local Lutheran church had chosen to help the literacy program at the Adult School. Therefore, I learned that the same church operated a Meals on Wheels program.

Now when I took a course on grant writing, a course offered through the UCLA Extension Program, I heard something interesting about Meals on Wheels. Our instructor used to speculate on the needs of a Meals on Wheels program in Culver City, CA, the city in which I lived at the time. I assumed he had some knowledge of the actual program of the Lutheran Church in Culver City.

I even made sure to tell the minister of that church that the outreach efforts at his church had not gone unnoticed.
