High School Wrestling: Bodyweight Training Tips

I first learned bodyweight exercises and calisthenics in gym class in elementary school. In gym class, we mainly did push-ups, sit-ups, and jumping jacks. I think we’ve also learned how to do burpees and mountaineers. Our PE teacher even made us crawl from time to time.

When I was a wrestler in high school, we used bodyweight exercises and calisthenics as part of our warm up and conditioning purposes. We did push ups, sit ups and jumping jacks as part of our warm up. Every once in a while we would get in a big circle and do calisthenics at the end of practice. We would go around the circle and each wrestler would choose an exercise to do. In other practices, we would do a countdown. One countdown involved doing 10 repetitions of push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, burpees, and laps around the wrestling room. Then we would do nine repetitions of each exercise. Then we would do eight repetitions of each exercise and so on until the full countdown finished.

We did a lot of wind sprints in the wrestling room and the adjoining gym. From time to time we would do something called hit ’ems. We’d run in place until our trainer yelled, “Hit him!” Then we would drop face down and get back up as fast as possible. I remember running this exercise myself once. Sometimes he would give us a break while we ran in place and other times he would do a quick succession of punches immediately after we got back on our feet.

Some people make pretty big claims when it comes to bodyweight exercises. Some claim that bodyweight exercises are superior to weight lifting. Some believe otherwise. Some simply believe that endurance is endurance and that neither option is better than the other when it comes to strength and conditioning. He cites the strength and musculature of gymnasts as an example of the value of bodyweight exercise. Most of us have seen how well built gymnasts are. Have you ever seen a gymnast do a plank? Have you ever seen a gymnast do an Iron Cross? They don’t lift weights and yet they are incredibly strong. Christopher Sommer wrote an interesting article entitled Building an Olympic Body Through Bodyweight Conditioning that you might be able to locate through an online search.

Three of Pavel’s favorite bodyweight exercises:

Pavel doesn’t believe in doing endless sets of reps. He suggests making a more difficult exercise by manipulating the leverage involved. This involves doing a few repetitions several times throughout the day. He always leaves a representative at the bank. Don’t work to failure. He can do pushups several times a day, but only a few repetitions in any given workout. Pavel also believes in making “stairs”. For example, you do a push-up and then rest for a second. You stay in the position and then you do two push-ups and rest for two seconds. You keep going up the ladder until the reps start to get tough. Then make another ladder.

He points out that some very successful wrestlers and wrestlers have primarily used bodyweight training instead of weight training. He claims that burpees can give you a great aerobic workout and are extremely versatile. Matt is a bit of a burpee fan.

Bodyweight training is not magic. Weight lifting can and should be part of your overall conditioning program. However, bodyweight training can definitely be a great addition to your conditioning program. Bodyweight exercises and calisthenics aren’t just for gym class and warming up. Bodyweight Conditioning: Why It’s A Superior Way To Train

In previous articles I have tried to explain why bodyweight conditioning is a superior form of training. I’ve talked about gymnasts and how they are able to develop incredible, animal-like strength using nothing more than their own body weight. Another example of athletes who are in incredible shape with great athletic ability are wrestlers. And by wrestlers, I don’t mean today’s professional wrestlers. Most of these are more artists than athletes. However, there was a time when professional wrestling was a real sport. Real wrestling, unlike WWE, requires strength, stamina, and flexibility. At the turn of the last century, some of these wrestling matches lasted for hours. How did these athletes get into the shape required to do this? You guessed it. Most of them used some form of bodyweight exercises.

One of the biggest proponents of natural bodyweight conditioning was a professional wrestler named Karl Gotch. He wrestled in the 1948 Olympics and turned professional thereafter. He was known for being in incredible shape and for being an absolute maniac when it came to conditioning. Here are these thoughts on training:

“I don’t like lifting weights for wrestling,” says Karl. “I think you should do gymnastic type exercises that use your own body weight. Take a gymnast, for example. She is the only athlete who, without weight training, when given her own body weight and asked to push it overhead it will BANG and press it no problem you have to look at animals in the wild that’s what I did I watched them move and figured out how to do similar movements as a kid in Belgium a doctor a My friend took me to the zoo to observe the animals, he said that they were the ones who knew how to train, he was right, so I started to put together a way of training… but I don’t want to take credit for it. The bodyweight exercises Karl is talking about are probably the type Indian wrestlers used to (and still do) do. Exercises like Hindu squats and Hindu push-ups, among others. Also, a lot of Yoga actually has its roots in wrestling, I think.

Regardless, for most of his wrestling career, Karl was a fierce advocate of bodyweight conditioning. However, he was open-minded and DID decide to train exclusively with weights. In his mind, how would he know if his natural methods were superior if he didn’t try otherwise? He worked diligently at it, and was once able to squat 700 pounds and bench over 400. Pretty impressive. What Karl discovered, however, is that weight training did not give him CONDITIONED STRENGTH. I mean, the strength he gained allowed him to lift weights, but that’s about it. When he participated in a wrestling match, he would get tired after a very short period of time. Again, this is the key. In my opinion, man-man exercises like weight lifting don’t train your body the way nature intended. You CAN achieve a certain look with it, which is fine. Ultimately though, it’s a fake look. Karl would call it fake muscle. All that muscle you put on may look good, but none of it is worth it. What can you do with that? If you get tired playing tennis or hurt a muscle lifting a bag of groceries, who cares? If you want to get in top shape, the strength you have must be balanced with stamina and flexibility. The way to achieve this is with a bodyweight conditioning program.

So the question is, what exactly do you want? Chances are you’re not a wrestler (or gymnast) and never plan to be. However, what do you look for in an exercise program? If you want to achieve a naturally healthy, athletic body that is strong, flexible, and possesses great stamina, bodyweight exercises are the way to go. Always remember, animals in the wild don’t need to use machines or weights, and neither do you.

If your horse feels anxious every time he leaves his herd, then that is the behavior that is being reinforced. Leaving your herd is always a negative and stressful experience.

These are my 4 steps to help your sour horse friend be calm around you.

Step 1 – Find out how far away from your friends your horse can be while remaining calm and comfortable. You have identified your comfort zone. That may be just on the other side of the paddock fence. So be it. That’s where you start.

Step 2 – Walk a few meters away from your comfort zone paying special attention to see when your anxiety begins. At the first sign of tension, take her back to her comfort zone until she calms down.

Step 3 – Do things that she likes while you work with her. Things that feel good like getting ready, scratching her favorite spots, giving her a special treat like carrots or apples. Try to feed him morning and evening grain away from the other horses, just outside of that comfort zone. If she doesn’t want to eat, you’ve gone too far out of her comfort zone, she takes her back. If she’s a little stressed, but she wants to eat, you’re in the right place.

I mean, are you crazy about movies, period? I must admit that I am a cracker for movies. So all those who consider themselves crazy about movies raise their hands. Yes, that’s almost everyone. Why are we crazy about cinema? Why do we live in a movie-crazed society? Hey, what are movies anyway?

How popular are the movies? Well, the keyword “movies” boasts 1.1 billion and a growing number of mind-boggling searches on the Google search engine alone. And the keyword “movie trailers” has collected more than 127 million searches. Watching movie trailers on the internet has become a popular hobby for many. I know my husband is one of them. He loves watching movie trailers of him.

Last year alone it generated a staggering box office gross of $29.2 billion worldwide in 2009 alone. Movies are seen and made all over the world.
