The basic martini recipe is as simple as you can get. Traditionally, a Martini is made with gin and dry white vermouth, although recently the Vodka Martini has become much more popular. Two dashes of orange bitters were mixed with half a jigger of dry French vermouth and half a jigger of dry English gin, stirred and served with an olive.

But it was Prohibition and the relative ease of illegal gin manufacturing that led to the rise of the Martini as the predominant cocktail of the mid-20th century.

With the repeal of Prohibition and the easy availability of quality gin, the drink became progressively drier and less vermouth was added.

The first reference to the use of vodka in a Martini was in the 1950s, but it was Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels and subsequent films that raised the profile of the vodka martini in the 1960s. In the novel Casino Royale , Bond’s recipe for his “vespa martini” consisted of three parts Gordon’s gin, one part Russian vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet aperitif, shaken until icy cold, served with a lemon wedge. In the second Bond novel, Live and Let Die, Bond drank conventional vodka martinis.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the martini was considered old-fashioned and was replaced by more elaborate cocktails and wine sodas. But the mid-1990s saw a resurgence for the drink and an explosion of new versions. These new specialty martinis can be made with combinations of fresh fruit juices, splashes of cream, and brightly colored liqueurs.

“So, Harry, which university are you planning to go to?” she continued to ask.

I first learned bodyweight exercises and calisthenics in gym class in elementary school. In gym class, we mainly did push-ups, sit-ups, and jumping jacks. I think we’ve also learned how to do burpees and mountaineers. Our PE teacher even made us crawl from time to time.

When I was a wrestler in high school, we used bodyweight exercises and calisthenics as part of our warm up and conditioning purposes. We did push ups, sit ups and jumping jacks as part of our warm up. Every once in a while we would get in a big circle and do calisthenics at the end of practice. We would go around the circle and each wrestler would choose an exercise to do. In other practices, we would do a countdown. One countdown involved doing 10 repetitions of push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, burpees, and laps around the wrestling room. Then we would do nine repetitions of each exercise. Then we would do eight repetitions of each exercise and so on until the full countdown finished.

We did a lot of wind sprints in the wrestling room and the adjoining gym. From time to time we would do something called hit ’ems. We’d run in place until our trainer yelled, “Hit him!” Then we would drop face down and get back up as fast as possible. I remember running this exercise myself once. Sometimes he would give us a break while we ran in place and other times he would do a quick succession of punches immediately after we got back on our feet.

Some people make pretty big claims when it comes to bodyweight exercises. Some claim that bodyweight exercises are superior to weight lifting. Some believe otherwise. Some simply believe that endurance is endurance and that neither option is better than the other when it comes to strength and conditioning. I think bodyweight exercises can certainly play a role in general wrestling conditioning.

Matt Furey wrote a popular book titled combat conditioning explaining the benefits of bodyweight training. Matt Furey is a former NCAA Division 2 Wrestling Champion and a Shuai Chiao Kung Fu World Champion. So it might be a good idea to read what he has to say on the subject of bodyweight training. He claims that bodyweight training is more functional (meaning force you can use). He reminds his reader to consider how much stronger and more flexible animals are compared to humans. Pavel doesn’t believe in doing endless sets of reps. He suggests making a more difficult exercise by manipulating the leverage involved. For example, push-ups that are done with your feet elevated are more difficult than regular push-ups. Pavel also believes in Greasing the Groove (GTG). This involves doing a few repetitions several times throughout the day. He always leaves a representative at the bank. Don’t work to failure. He can do pushups several times a day, but only a few repetitions in any given workout. Pavel also believes in making “stairs”. For example, you do a push-up and then rest for a second. You stay in the position and then you do two push-ups and rest for two seconds. You keep going up the ladder until the reps start to get tough. Then make another ladder.

He claims that burpees can give you a great aerobic workout and are extremely versatile. Matt is a bit of a burpee fan.

Triplets occupy the same amount of space that two notes of that value would normally occupy. If you say a word with three syllables, say the word strawberry, then you have an idea that triplets should be the same length.

I recommend saying the words “step by step” aloud as you play each triplet in the piece to get the rhythm right.

So, the triplets will be played on the first, third, and fifth notes in the group of six. As a result, the second eighth note comes right after the second triplet.

I usually count (one and two and) to six each time I play both hands, placing each note and each triplet in the correct place. You will get it with practice. Hear where each note falls within the rhythm.

A song from a movie like Star Wars (Main Theme) by John Williams is a great example of the use of triplets and what an exciting song to play. Note that triplets are not always the same repeated note, nor are they found only in classical music (Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata), but also in blues. Remember, a triplet is a group of notes played at the same time as two notes of the same pitch.

Adam and Eve knew they had done something wrong when they chose to eat the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. God told them that they were not allowed to eat this fruit, but they disobeyed and ate it anyway. Now they were afraid to see God, their best friend. Their fear made them try to hide from God among the trees in the garden. It was very foolish for Adam and Eve to think that they could hide from God. God knows where all his children are at all times. God knew where Adam and Eve were and he called them.

Adam, where are you?

Adam said, “God, I hear your voice, but I’m afraid and I hide.”

God asked him, “Why are you afraid to be with me? Have you eaten the fruit that I told you not to eat?”

Adam said, “Eve gave me some of the fruit and I ate it.”

God must have been very sad about what Adam said. God knew his rules had been broken. God would have to make some changes for them to learn how important it is to obey and love God.

First, God made changes to the snake. He told the snake that because he tricked the couple into disobeying God, the snake would never walk on legs again. Now the serpent would crawl on his belly like a serpent. God also said that the serpent would hate Eve and all her children forever and ever.

Second, God made changes to Eve. He said that she would have a lot of trouble and pain in her life.

Third, God made changes in Adam. He told him that because he listened to his wife and disobeyed God’s rules, he would also have problems in his life. He would have to work very, very hard for all his food. And finally, one day, his body would die and he would return to the dust that God made him from.

The fourth and final change was probably the hardest. The first people of God could no longer live in the beautiful garden. They were sent to the harsh world. God placed angels at the entrance to the garden so that no one could enter there again.

The changes that God made were sad changes. But even though Adam and Eve had to leave the garden, God did not let them. And He will never leave you, either.
