Roulette Tables – What’s the Difference?
If you’ve ever been to Monte Carlo or Las Vegas you know there’s a lot of money to be made in roulette, all of these amazing places were based on the game or more specifically the “house edge”. This is the statistical advantage that each Casino has in each game – in roulette it is provided by the roulette tables. Math isn’t the most exciting subject for everyone, but when you look at what can be achieved, it suddenly becomes a bit more appealing.
Las Vegas was based on probability, that is, the probability that more players lose than win. He must look at every betting game with an eye on probability, if only to control how he actually plays. Roulette is never going to be the choice of professional players as there are many other games with better odds, barring the possibility of wheel drift or anything unexpected, the only thing you need with roulette is luck.
However, the choice of roulette tables you play at makes a big difference in the amount of luck you need – there are actually two main tables that you will find in most casinos.
European or French roulette table
The most important fact about this roulette wheel is the fact that it has only one zero. This is mainly the ‘house edge’ – all your 50/50 bets on red/black or odd/even are biased towards the house because of this number. Originally this didn’t exist at all until the first Casino in Monte Carlo thought it had no real edge, but that extra number means the Casino will always win overall if the laws of probability hold true.

In America, the French wheel was originally used, but the casinos decided the house edge wasn’t big enough (they probably checked real estate prices in Las Vegas). So they added the extra slot ’00’ which pretty much doubles the house edge. The distribution of the numbers and colors on both wheels is distributed in different ways, but both in such a way that there is the same possibility of red/black and odd/even combinations. The advantage of playing on a European table is made even greater by the addition of another rule if it is being used: ‘La Partage’. This rule means that you only lose 50% of your even money bets if the ball lands on zero, another significant statistical advantage. The difference is really simple: if you have the option to always play on a European table, the house edge is much lower and you have a much higher chance that lady luck will shine on you.
