Gangsters in America – Charlie "The bug" Workman – The Man Who Killed Dutch Schultz

Charlie “The Bug” Workman was the strong and silent type, who killed up to 20 people for Louie “Lepke” Buchalter’s Murder Incorporated. But Workman’s fame was being the man who shot Dutch Schultz to death.

Charles Workman was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1908, the second of six children to Samuel and Anna Workman. Workman dropped out of school in the ninth grade and began wandering the streets of the Lower East Side looking for trouble. When he was 18, Workman was first arrested for stealing a $ 12 bundle of cotton yarn from a truck parked on Broadway. As it was his first offense, Workman was paroled. The following year, Workman was arrested for shooting a man behind the ear about who-owed-who $ 20. At the time, Workman’s reputation on the streets was such that the man he shot refused to testify in his against and even said that he could not identify Workman as the shooter. Annoyed, the police lifted his file and decided that Workman had violated his probation for stealing cotton. As a result, Workman was sent to the New York State Reformatory. For the next several years, Workman was in and out of jail for parole violations such as associating with “questionable characters” and not getting a job.

In 1926, Workman got hooked as a freelance legbreaker, or idiot, for Lepke’s union strike-breaking activities. Workman did such a good job that Lepke put him on his permanent payroll of $ 125 a week, as an assassin for Lepke’s Murder Incorporated. Lepke liked Workman’s calm demeanor, and after Workman had some exceptional “hits” for Lepke, Lepke gave him the nickname “The Bug” because a person had to be insane to kill with the quiet nonchalance he displayed. Workman when he was performing his horrible duties. Workman’s other nickname, “handsome Charlie,” was given to him by members of the opposite sex.

For the next several years, Workman was in and out of trouble with the law. In 1932, he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. In 1933, he was arrested again for misleading an off-duty police officer after a small traffic dispute. Meanwhile, his specialty was killing who Lepke said needed to be killed. After a hit was made, Workman enjoyed the added benefit of “sweeping the pockets” of his victims. Most of the time, Workman earned an extra $ 1,000 for his efforts, and once he even found a $ 10,000 voucher in the trouser pocket of some poor jerk he had just beaten up.

In 1935, orders came from above that the maniacal gangster Dutch Schultz had to go. Lepke decided that Workman was the right man for the job. On October 23, 1935, Lepke sent Workman and Mendy Weiss, Lepke’s second in charge, to the Palace Chophouse in Newark, New Jersey, in a car driven by a man known as “Piggy.” While Weiss was near the bar, Workman went into the men’s room to make sure there were no witnesses. Standing in the men’s room was a scared Dutch Schultz. Workman hit Schultz once in the torso, piercing his stomach, large intestine, bile and liver. Workman emerged from the bathroom and he and Weiss went into the back room of the restaurant, where three of Schultz’s henchmen, Lulu Rosencrantz, Abe Landau, and Abbadabba Berman, were enjoying their last dinner together. Weiss and Workmen kept firing until their guns were empty and their quarry died on the ground.

Weiss headed for the front door, but Workman turned and headed for the bathroom, expecting to find a large bundle of cash in Schultz’s pockets. Workman’s first surprise was when he didn’t find a penny in Schultz’s possession. The second surprise was when he went outside expecting to find Weiss and Piggy in a waiting car and found nothing except the sound of police sirens rushing to the scene.

Workman ran into a swamp behind the chophouse, where he threw off his bloodstained coat and began to walk in the direction of Manhattan, his shoes and pants wet and smoke coming out of his ears, thinking he would be left for dead afterward. . a major success. Workman found a set of railroad tracks and followed them through the night. The tracks led to a tunnel under the Hudson River, and Workman emerged at dawn in midtown Manhattan. He went to a Lower East Side coffee shop, favored by thugs like himself, and was mortified when he discovered that Scultz’s murder was all over the papers, and that on the street it was said that Weiss was the only shooter.

Workman went to a friend’s house in Chelsea to sleep for a few hours, and when he woke up, he called Lepke and told him that he wanted to kill Weiss, for getting rid of him after the Scultz hit. Lepke requested a meeting a few days later at Weiss’s home at 400 Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn. Workman told his story first. When it was Weiss’s turn to defend himself, he said: “I claim that beating the Dutchman was a mob business. And I stayed until the Dutchman’s beating was over. But then the bug went back to the bathroom to rob the Dutchman. I claim it was no longer a mob business. It was a personal matter. “

Lepke ruled in Weiss’s favor, telling Workman that if he was smart, he would drop the matter entirely and never bring it up again, under the pretext that he might hit him himself. Lepke sent Workman to Miami to calm down, and there Workman met Lucky Luciano, who was part of a nine-man national crime syndicate, along with Lepke. Workman needs to borrow some cash to keep a low profile, and when he started mentioning Weiss’s actions the night of the Schultz coup, Luciano interrupted him by saying, “Here’s the money. Now stop talking about that other thing. “.

In 1940, Workman was arrested in Brighton Beach for a “loitering” change. Workman’s pinch was orchestrated by Special Counsel Thomas E. Dewey, who was tasked with arresting, trying, convicting and executing every member of Murder Incorporated that he could get his hands on. By then, Murder Incorporated killer Abe “Kid Twist” Reles had already turned into a rat and told Dewey that Workman had done Schultz’s work. This was confirmed by Allie Tannenbaum, perhaps Workman’s closest friend in the mob, who had also become a canary.

In 1941, Workman was tried for the murder of Scultz. During the trial, when Workman realized that he had little chance of being acquitted, he changed his plea to “no defense.” Judge Daniel Brennan accepted the statement and sentenced Workman to life in prison.

As Workman was led out of the courtroom, the guards let him talk to his brother Abe. Workman told Abe, “Whatever you do, live honestly. If you make 20 cents a day, do it for yourself. If you can’t earn an honest living, make the government support you. Stay away from gangs and don’t.” a wise guy. Take care of mom and dad and watch ‘Itchy’ (his little brother). You need to see it. “

Workman was sent to Trenton State Prison. In 1942, Workman offered his services to the United States Navy to undertake a suicide mission to attack Japan and avenge Pearl Harbor. Your request was denied. In 1952, Workman was transferred to Rahway State Prison Farm and worked there in forced labor until he was paroled in 1964, after nearly 23 years in prison. After his release, Workman went direct and got a job as a salesman at the Garment Center, which was once ruled by his boss Lepke.

Is the PS4 really the best game console? We review, you choose

If Sony was trying to make a statement with the launch of its PlayStation 4 console, it did a good job. Unlike most of the rhetoric and hype before the game, the PS4 seems to have lived up to its claims and is the most powerful console on the market. You’ve seen another overhaul of your exterior and some major design modifications to your Dual Shock controller. In addition, it has expanded memory and greatly increased the performance of its processors. These updates are clearly evident and the PS4 offers stunning HD graphics that run flawlessly and at lightning speed.

With some well-equipped exclusive game titles, streaming access, and multiplayer capabilities, PlayStation enthusiasts will likely welcome the newcomer with open arms. Not to mention, this console is priced at around $ 100 less than its ardent rival, the Xbox One. As it stands today, the PS4 has made a huge entry.

Performance: 5.0 / 5.0

The PS4 has a single chip processor that combines an eight-core AMD x86-64 “Jaguar” CPU with a 1.84 teraflop GPU. It supports 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and has a 500GB mechanical hard drive. Sony boasts that its new hardware allows it to perform ten times better than the latest PS3. That is quite an impressive feat.

Another nice touch is the fact that the PS4 comes with a 500GB drive. This additional space helps download movies and games from the PlayStation market. If you ever feel pressed for space, don’t worry, because DIYers can also upgrade the hard drive without voiding your warranty.

The HD graphics of the PS4 are impressive and the responsiveness of the consoles is currently unmatched. What’s even more impressive is the fact that this machine can run at such a high level without sounding like an airplane on a runway or overheating. Not to mention that the entire power supply is inside the unit; unlike the Xbox One, which still has it plugged into the external power cord in an attempt to save space within the console.

Features: 5.0 / 5.0

The PS4 comes in the same half matte black, half gloss exterior as the Xbox One. Still, it looks completely different. That’s because the PS4 has a slim, sleek design and doesn’t look like a mid-80s oversized VCR. I’m not saying the Xbox One is the ugly stepsister of the bunch, but they probably wouldn’t ask her to prom if she was. PS3 was available and ready. Now, for everyone who was offended by such a superficial statement, I am well aware that my mother always said, “What counts is what is inside.” And in that sense, I assure you, the PS4 would still be the first to be asked to dance.

The PS4 has seen some modifications to its components, and for that reason, any of your older PlayStation peripherals won’t work, imagine.

Although the PS4 does not have prior capabilities to play your PS3 titles, many of the games you previously owned can be purchased at a considerable discount from your online store. The only downside is that you will have to insert the old PS3 disc into the console while playing the online version.

Games purchased from the PlayStation Store download directly to your hard drive and there is no need to worry about the disc getting lost or scratched. The only negative is the fact that downloaded titles cannot be borrowed for the weekend or redeemed for credit at your local game store. As this way of shopping for games becomes more popular, stores like GameStop and other game trading retailers could be taking a hit, that, or a seat next to Blockbuster in “Reminiscence Park.”

The new PS4 Dual Shock 4 has undergone some physical changes that make it stand out a bit from its previous counterpart. Some of the most notable changes pertain to the analog sticks; that have been spaced a little more to avoid collisions with the thumbs. They have also been designed with recessed caps and covered with a rubber coating to improve grip. The Dual Shock 4 also comes with an external speaker and headphone jack for your headphones, just keep in mind that you can only output in stereo from connecting the drivers; a nice touch nonetheless. I would say that one of the nicer design features of the Dual Shock 4 is the metallic touchpad on the front of the controller. It works just like a laptop’s touchpad and is extremely smooth and responsive.

Although the Dual Shock 4 can be purchased and used on the PS3, older Dual Shock 3 controllers are not compatible with the PS4.

For those who already own a PS Vita, they can stream games from their PS4 via Wi-Fi to the handheld unit. This creates a second display screen, much like the one on the Wii U, and allows you to play while someone else is using the TV. Although this is a nice feature, it probably wouldn’t justify buying the PS Vita itself.

The PlayStation Camera is a nice touch, but it takes very little interaction to figure out that it’s not as robust as the Xbox Kinect and it doesn’t seem to have enough in-game interaction to be worth it. It also has a voice command feature, albeit a very limited one, and you may want to consider spending your money on another controller.

Multimedia: 4.4 / 5.0

The PS4 seems to have taken a back seat to its previous plans to be the all-in-one media center. While it can still boast of having one of the best performing Blu-Ray and DVD players on the market, unlike the PS3, you can no longer easily play music files, CDs, or stream content from your PC. Instead, it seems to work more like a Roku. However, if you just want to use the console to play games or have occasional access to Netflix and other movie apps, you’re good to go. Not to mention, movies are easy to access and can load at lightning speed. You can even use the PS4 to connect to social media and share some of the highlights of your games – nothing like showing off.

When it comes to music, both the Xbox and the PS4 have their own channels. PlayStation offers “Music Unlimited”, for a small fee, of course. It works very similar to Pandora and allows users to listen to entire albums. The only weakness is that it is a bit slower and less refined to recognize the true genre of music or artist you want. Along with this feature comes “Video Unlimited”. Another movie-based channel that’s surprisingly deep in the selection of titles and also allows streaming to alternative devices.

The PlayStation online gaming community has seen great improvements to the game interface and functionality. The only drawback, it is very similar to the Xbox, PS4 users will now have to pay to access the multiplayer area. Although this is a change from the PS3, where it was free, the experience has been vastly improved and will likely be considered worth the cost.

A useful feature of the PS4 is the iOS and Android app that allows users to connect to the PlayStation Store and buy and download games while on the go. With this app, games can be automatically downloaded to the console, while you are away from home, and then ready to play once you arrive. All in all, the PS4 still has a good interaction and variety of features in the multimedia department, but it lacks the depth experienced with the PS3. Due to some of these complaints, Sony has taken note and I imagine they will make some adjustments to their updates.

Conclusion: 4.9 / 5.0

The PS4 is $ 100 cheaper than the Xbox One, but even if you removed the Kinect component to lower the price of the Xbox, the PS4 is a much better value for the dollar. Its performance is undeniable, and while the Xbox One is a well-built unit, until Microsoft addresses some performance issues, it won’t rub shoulders with Sony.

As for the downside, the PS4 only comes with two front USB ports. We feel that this design flaw also present with the PS3 would have been fixed, but apparently not. It also lacks the depth of game titles like Xbox One, and it always has. However, it is within reach and has many high-impact exclusive titles and a promising future.

The PS4 is a powerful gaming console that offers gamers exactly what they are looking for; a perfect HD gaming experience with full functionality and control. Based on its undeniable performance, improved design, and price, Consumer High Five Reviews finds the first-round draft pick a no-brainer.

Promote your site with social bookmarking

You can promote your site with social bookmarking to develop a more active sense of community engagement on your site. Social sites that allow bookmarking give you the ability to create content and interact with the content of others.

Some social bookmarking sites function as a central link repository. This can be very useful to you if you access the Internet from a variety of devices over time. Others take an even more social approach by allowing you various controls over the public visibility of your bookmarks based on your social settings. This gives you a better chance of increasing your site traffic and invoking interest in your site.

Among the most popular social bookmarking sites for site promotion are those that allow you to set up voting for articles. The more upvotes an article gets, the more exposure it will have. Top-billing articles get significant traffic, which can lead to a lot of referrals to your site. So when creating articles for site content or for generating traffic from bookmarking sites, think carefully about the benefits of hot and controversial topics. Anything that encourages people to vote a lot could boost your site traffic as well.

You can encourage social bookmarking by your visitors by adding bookmarking links from favorite websites to the bottom of each of your article pages. You’re probably already quite familiar with the common bookmark icons that appear for each social media site at the bottom of article pages. Every time one of your readers clicks on one of these bookmarks, a bookmark is added to the corresponding social bookmarking website.

Some of the most popular bookmarking sites available right now are Digg, Reddit, Netscape, Stumbleupon, Blinklist, Del.icio.us, Furl, Fark, and Simpy. You will notice that many other social media sites are starting to add social bookmarking features as well.

Home Kitchen

Decorate your kitchen with a retro 1940s theme

Today’s kitchen décor comes in all colors, sizes, and eras. A fun way to decorate your kitchen is with a little ’40s nostalgia. Painted cabinets, glass knobs and vintage bedding combined with new appliances that have a retro look can give you a unique and functional kitchen.

You can get a great ’40s look without spending a bundle and still be able to fill your kitchen with some nice collectibles. Here are some ideas on how to get a 1940s look in your kitchen.

Colors

Some popular colors from this era include jadeite and a red and white theme. You can find many vintage accents to fill your kitchen with any of these color schemes. Why not start a jadeite collection that you can display in open cabinets and use for tableware. You can liven up the place with vintage wooden handle contraptions that are painted in jadite and cream. If you go for the red and white theme, there are plenty of red vintage kitchen utensils and vintage bedding can really liven up the place. Another advantage of the red and white theme is that you can also add a fruit theme on top, like apples or strawberries.

I would leave the walls a neutral color: white or off-white so that it does not detract from all of them.
your great accessories. A linoleum floor in a checkerboard pattern would be perfect.
Some color coordinated rugs can add a little color to the floor and tie it all together.

Turning on

Simple lighting is the best. You can buy antique ceiling lamps and wall sconces if you want a
really authentic look. Of course, you want to make sure you have enough tasks.
lighting, so some modern lights will have to be worked on. I suggest you make them as subtle as possible so they don’t look out of place.

Window treatments

Use vintage curtains for your windows. You can buy them with complementary colors and cool patterns.
If you can’t find curtains, make some from old kitchen towels or tablecloths, you can buy tablecloths that have stains in 1 area at a fairly cheap price and then use the good area for curtains. If you go for a 1940s red and white kitchen décor theme, you may want to choose cherries or apples as a sub-theme and look for curtains with those fruits in the motif.

Furniture

The glass knobs will really liven up your furniture and cabinets and add an authentic vintage look. If you’ve painted cabinets white or cream, try the green glass knobs. Your table and chairs should be a chrome vintage style dining room (you can buy these new and you can still get old ones too), or a vintage style wooden table with an enamel top. If you can’t find any of these, you can buy any type of table and hide it with a vintage tablecloth.

Accessories

1940s-style kitchen accessories can be found in antique shopping malls, and you can also buy new ones.
Soften the room by hanging antique tablecloths and tea towels. Chrome appliances go well with this look, as do the retro-style appliances you can buy new these days. And don’t forget the vintage
bread box and jars – all kitchens had them on the counter and you can choose from chrome
or nail polish in cream and green, or red and white to complete your look.

Gas saving devices

Gas saving scams

There have been hundreds of unique ways and products to help us save on fuel, here are some of the latest gas saving devices. Most of the devices tested have no benefits, but read and see which ones over the years can really help you save on gas.

1. Aftermarket Refit Device, 1999: This gas saving device makes the fuel burn completely, as the fuel passes through the stabilizer, the molecules line up to burn in the combustion chamber. The device is supposed to save gas and help MPG. Tests were conducted and the results said there were no positive or negative effects on exhaust emissions or fuel economy.

2. PetroMoly HP Motor Oil, 1999: This high performance oil is a replacement for motor oil that increases fuel economy by 10% and reduces toxic emissions by 60%, it is an emission reduction device. The EPA and independent labs tested this product and found that it did improve, but it was so small that it was of no importance in improving MPG.

3. Vitalizer III, 1999: This fuel saving device is a copper tube consisting of various metals, which is placed in the fuel line. This causes a disruption in the fuel flow pattern, presumably forming an electrostatic colloidal matrix. The EPA tested this product and found that the increase in fuel economy was less than 1.0% in all six observations, which did not make a significant difference in fuel economy or exhaust emissions and was considered a scam.

4. Super FUELMAX, 2005: This interesting and unique device is a set of two magnets made of a mixture of neodymium and can be installed in cars, trucks or boats. It is placed around the fuel supply line to the engine and is said to increase fuel consumption by up to 27%. However, it was tested by the EPA and found to have no effect on fuel economy or exhaust emissions performance.

5. DreamTech, 2006: Fuel savings for cars and trucks are said to improve fuel efficiency, generate power, and reduce emissions by 26.1%. This device cleans the engine and increases engine performance. Helps burn more of the exhaust that is considered unburned pollution. The device must be installed and EPA testing showed no significant change in MPG.

6. Fuel Doctor FD-47, 2011 – This fuel efficiency booster device is designed to improve your car’s MPG by simply plugging it into the cigarette lighter socket. It works by conditioning the flow of energy throughout the car’s electrical system. The impact can vary, depending on the car and its condition. Tests by renowned automotive and engineering authorities such as Intertek, Ledico-Bosch and Kett Engineering showed that the device works and can increase its MPG by 15-20%.

Tips on using the Google keyword tool

Successful online marketing depends on keyword research. While doing keyword research isn’t really difficult, it’s one area that will help you increase your online traffic. Mastering keyword research takes practice and a lot of trial and error, but as you continue to do your research, you will become more and more adept at finding the keywords that search engines are looking for, thereby increasing your traffic. .

When starting to do keyword research the best tool you can use is the Google Keyword Tool. This is a free tool and available to everyone, but to get the maximum benefit you need to log into Google, this is easy to do if you have a Gmail account or other Google services account. The difference between logging into the Keyword Tool or not is that with a Google account, when you do a keyword search, you will get up to 800 keyword ideas instead of just a few.

Once you log in, start by entering your keyword or phrase, like making money online. Then on the left side of the page, scroll down to where it says Match Types. Now depending on what you are doing if you have to choose between wide, exact or phrasing. Let’s say you want to target a specific phrase to use in a PPC ad on Google or Microsoft / Bing, then click the box next to “phrase” and go to the next step. I will use Phase for this example.

The next step is to go to the area that says advanced options and filters and depending on whether you want to search for keywords only for US searches or all countries or some other specific country or even language then you need to click on the box appropriate and choose my example I will use all countries and English.

Then click search. You will get two different options, one is keywords and the other is ad group ideas that you can use to put together different ad groups for your blogs, PPC advertising, or SEO. Let’s use the actual keywords found. In our Make Money Online example, the tool displays 800 different keywords related to the Phrase. You then choose the keywords you want to use for your blog or advertising that will get you searched by the many search engines.

One thing you might see is the number of global monthly searches or local monthly searches. For a global ranking, see Global Monthly Searches. Now here’s a little tip if you want your ad or article or blog post to rank high on Google for a particular keyword phase, look at the number of searches for a particular keyword and look for hidden gems that are listed. they search, for example, between 1000 and 3000 times. and experiment with them, as the competition will be lower and the chances of being placed on the first page of Google for that search will be higher.

How to organize a great New Year’s Eve work party

The end of the year is almost here and the time has come to plan a holiday / New Years Eve party at work!

This year, you are in charge, what are you going to do?

Whatever you do, don’t bring balloons, fast food, and a keg of beer!

There are so many fun ways to have a great end-of-the-year work celebration, and without a lot of effort on your part either.

Here are a few that I have personally been to and had a lot of fun attending:

A few years ago, our business owners decided that we should all do more than just have dinner and go home. They wanted something interactive that would make us talk about something different than what we did all day at the “9 to 5” location.

What did you do? Where did they go? Not far from our business there was an “entertainment” mall. You know the multiplex type of theater, at least a dozen restaurants and shops to get into. One of the places was a themed restaurant called Dave and Busters; They rented one of the open but secluded areas for all of us. The package they chose came with a buffet dinner, 2 drinks from the bar, and $ 15 in chips each. The tokens can be used to play video games, indoor basketball, pool games, group wifi games, etc.

We all had a great time! We found a new camaraderie that we never knew existed. We talk with each other’s spouse, we talk about our families and our outside interests. Then we took the tickets we won and went to the “giveaways” area and picked out a bunch of silly gifts.

It was a fun and memorable evening!

One more year at the same firm, the owners found a bowling alley that not only rented several lanes to us, but also set up a “tournament”, a snack bar and a soft drink / beer bar. The tournament winner received 2 free bowling games for 4 on their next visit and the owners added an extra day of vacation to the jackpot. Once again, this brought our group closer than before and raised our work morale!

If your company is one of the vast majority that has to cut back on celebrations this year, try hosting a potluck and the “Pageant of the Regift.” They all do the usual for potluck, but they all bring something unwrapped from home, put their name on a hat, and then start handing out gifts. It’s a great way to ditch Aunt Sadie’s homemade bunny hat or Grandma’s hand-painted jam jar. Provide a good laugh for everyone!

Now the latest idea is a slight reinterpretation of the actual theme made by the company I worked for: Our bosses always got lots of gifts from vendors, everything from flat-screen TVs to plastic keychains. So, they would still call it the “Regift Parade”, but they would start with the “best” gifts and work with the “worst” elements. One year I received a 5 pound jar of pistachios and a set of coffee mugs with a vendor’s stamp on it. Another, I got a “spa” set (puff of wash, back cleanser, a hot / cold eye mask, and several scented candles), a box of Godiva chocolates, and the top seller stamped a new mouse pad.

The point is: have your end-of-the-year gathering bring your coworkers together and give everyone a different point of view on who you are and how much fun you can have.

Happy Holidays!

What was the best game console of all time?

I have always been a huge fan of video games. I have had almost every video game console that has been released. From Atari, CalekoVision, Sega Master System, SNES, and much more.

I couldn’t tell you which one was the best that has ever come out, in all honesty I think this is just a matter of preference. However, I would have to say that my all-time favorite had to have been the Sega Genesis. He was the one I grew up playing, that’s why I love it so much.

After that, I would have to say that my favorites would be the Sony PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, which were the two game systems that I played most of my adult life with. Now I don’t really play as much as I used to, but my kids do and the game of choice seems to be the Nintendo Wii. They can play that game for as long as I allow them and they will never tire of it either.

I will say that the Sega Genesis console had to have some of the best games out there at the time. And after all, that is what makes a game console good is the games that are available to it. Sega had some great titles, Streets of Rage, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, the list could go on for days. I really have to say they were my favorites, but there really is no clear winner in this battle, as I mentioned, it’s really all just a matter of preference.

Common movements taught in swimming lessons

At first, the swimming lessons focus on one thing: teaching students how to stay afloat while in the water. However, after mastering the basics, students can focus on more complicated skills, including moving to individual strokes. If you don’t really understand the difference between butterfly and stroke or front crawl and backstroke, take a few minutes to learn more about how to perform each stroke.

The crawl: one of the first strokes in swimming lessons

Tracking is probably the most common way to swim. When swimmers use the crawl, they kick their legs in a fluttering kick while sticking their arms through the water to move them forward. If you’ve ever watched a swimming competition, you’ve probably seen the crawl during the freestyle event. Swimmers have the option of using any style during freestyle, however crawling is the most common because it is possible to move faster through the water.

The butterfly: a quick stroke for swimmers

If you are looking for speed and power, the butterfly is your style. When performing the butterfly, a swimmer’s arms, shoulders, head, and part of the chest come completely out of the water while the legs remain together while performing a dolphin kick. However, coordinating these movements can be quite difficult to learn and can be nearly impossible for younger children, which is why many swimming lessons do not include it until students are very advanced.

The back: one of the easiest ways to swim

After the crawl, the backstroke is probably the easiest style to learn and some boys especially like it because they are not required to put their face in the water. To perform the backstroke, swimmers float on their backs while performing a flutter kick just below the surface of the water. The arms are extended over the head and plunged into the water. It can be difficult to swim in a straight line when doing the backstroke, so you may need to pay close attention to the pool lanes.

Many competitive cyclists or people who compete in triathlons focus heavily on the backstroke because it is a great way to help counter overuse injuries to hip abductors and IT bands. The movements necessary for the back help to strengthen muscles that can be damaged by cycling or other excessive use.

The breaststroke: a difficult stroke to learn

Like the butterfly, the breaststroke is one of the most difficult to learn. In the stroke, the recovery portion of the stroke occurs underwater, which means that swimmers need to focus more on reducing resistance and speeding up the strokes. Swimmers who forget these details can find it even more difficult to perform the breaststroke correctly. Also, the lower half of the body is more important in the breaststroke and swimmers will use a frog kick to help them move through the water.

If you are interested in learning more about any of these strokes, including how to perform them correctly, contact a local swim center to inquire about swimming lessons.
