Top 5 Green Energy Companies of 2008

Thousands of organizations and businesses are going the extra mile and spending the extra dollar to purchase utility-scale power from renewable resources. So much so that the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) compiles a quarterly list of the top green power companies from its Green Power Partnership program which came out in July 2008.

Some companies take baby steps toward a green campaign, but these companies are showing their allegiance to a greener environment by willingly spending millions of dollars on clean energy.

  1. Intel purchased 1.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in January 2008. This offsets 47 percent of total business energy use.
  2. PepsiCo it bought 1.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2007, the equivalent of powering 90,000 homes for an entire year. This represents 100 percent of your annual energy use. PepsiCo was named Green Energy Partner of the Year in 2007 by the EPA
  3. United States Air Force it has already purchased 9 million kilowatt hours of electricity this year as of July 2008. It has invested in various biogas, biomass, geothermal, solar and wind energy providers.
  4. fargo wells has purchased 5.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity from wind power providers so far in 2008. It is also a 2007 Green Power Partner of the Year. More than green power, Wells Fargo has made a number of other commitments with its green campaign, including LEED certifying its properties and offering online account statements.
  5. Whole Foods Market, in the past two years has purchased enough green energy to offset 100 percent of its energy use, totaling more than 5 million kilowatt hours per year. The company is also investing in many other efforts to reduce its carbon footprint on the environment.

Other organizations that rank high on the EPA list include Starbucks, Johnson & Johnson, and the University of Pennsylvania.
