Radio audience in Swaziland

Although there are only 3 radio channels in Swaziland, i.e. SBIS 1, 2 and VOC (a Christian channel), listeners in Swaziland also listen to other South African stations. However, unlike television, where South African television stations have a significantly large audience, local radio stations are listened to more than any cross-border radio station.

SBIS 1 (siSwati channel) has the most listeners across all demographics, followed by SBIS 2 (the English channel), which primarily attracts younger age groups. SBIS 1 (Swaziland Broadcasting and Information Service -1) attracts the best listeners from all the administrative districts of Swaziland (Hhohho, Manzini, Shiselweni and Lubombo). SBIS 2 has significantly equal audience reach in all districts except Shiselweni, where a higher percentage of people within this district tune in to the station. The VOC (Voice of the Church) has a fairly equal listening rate in all districts, being the highest in Lubombo.

Swaziland’s southern district, Shiselweni, also has the highest audience rating for South African (SA) stations compared to the audience for these stations within the other districts of Swaziland.

At the time of the survey, Jacaranda FM was the leading South African radio station listened to in Swaziland with a rating of around 8.5%, followed by Ukhozi FM, Ligwalagwala FM, Metro FM, East Coast Radio, SA FM and YFM, respectively.

On weekends, morning commute listening peaks around News at 7 a.m., compared to 6 a.m. on weekdays. Although radio audience in Swaziland drops off after the 7pm news, weekday radio audience in Swaziland is still quite a bit higher than on weekends until just after 9pm.

In-home listening is at its lowest between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. This is the same time that out-of-home listening spikes with its highest percentage of AQH listeners at 1 p.m. and then starts to decline afterward. of that, reaching its lowest level around 8 p.m.
