The 3 most underrated centers in the NBA

What makes a great center in the NBA? What is expected of an NBA center? Often too much is expected of schools and much of what they do goes unnoticed in the scores. This article will tackle some of these things and highlight the 3 NBA centers that are most underrated. For this analysis, only true centers will be reviewed. Many forwards often throw themselves in a game as a center, but they are not true centers.

Some of the great centers in NBA history have been noted for their dominance under the rim. Wilt Chamberlain revolutionized the game with his size and scoring ability. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had an incredible race and still holds the record for the most points in a race. Then names like Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal stand out as great centers who have left a legacy in the NBA.

However, large centers are rare. The great centers are those who dominate in goals, rebounds and defense game after game, year after year. The Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard is the only center currently demonstrating that kind of dominance at center position in the NBA. Now to look at the remaining centers, there are some that excel in one or two of the critical areas, but have weaknesses in other areas. The following three centers are the most underrated in the NBA today:

Andrew Bynum, Los Angeles Lakers
Unfortunately, Bynum has battled injuries throughout his career and hasn’t had a long series of games where he can prove himself. Last year he played 65 games and averaged 15 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in 30 minutes each game. This year his numbers have dropped, but he has recovered from an injury and has not played the same minutes in every game.

When you play on a team with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, you can’t expect Bynum to score much. It is effective when asked to bid. He has a high percentage of field shots, does not deliver the ball much, has good hands and good footwork.

On the defensive side, he provides a great wide body in the middle to prevent penetration. He doesn’t have as many blocks / play as the others, but he disrupts the other team’s offense just with his great body and long arms. His rebounding numbers are good and he’s solid on paper or center at defensive end.

Emeka Okafor, New Orleans Hornets
Emeka Okafor had high expectations entering the NBA and did not live up to those expectations, which has been viewed by many as a disappointment. However, he is doing very well this year with New Orleans. Too often, centers are compared to their legendary predecessors who dominated in the points column. In today’s game, centers just need to be able to complement the many wing players who are assuming the star roles. Okafor does it very well. His field goal percentage is very high, so he’s taking smart shots and playing on offense.

Okafor is also strong on the defensive end. He averages 9-10 rebounds / game year over year and also gets nearly 2 blocks / game. This is the type of production expected of a center. Filling the lane and helping defend speed in the NBA is critical to containing some of the league’s most powerful offenses, and Okafor’s athleticism allows him to meet this need for the Hornets.

One of Okafor’s weaknesses is his free kick. He doesn’t play to Shaquille O’Neal’s dominance, so this weakness is magnified in his game.

Marcus camby, Portland trailblazers
Yes, Marcus Camby is past his prime and had his time in the limelight, but he’s still not getting as much credit as he deserves at this point in his career. He averages 11.5 rebounds per game and is still a defensive force. His offensive numbers are lower than many other players, but he is a smart veteran who still helps his team on the offensive side. He has had better numbers throughout his career in almost every category than he currently has, but his performance has yet to be respected and teams have yet to account for his presence at center.

There are many other arguments in favor of underrated centers in the NBA today, but these are some who don’t seem to get enough credit for the things they do to make their teams successful.

Codependency is cunning and powerful

Centering your thinking and behavior around another person is a sign of codependency. We react to something external, rather than our own internal signals. Addicts are also codependent. Their lives revolve around their addiction, be it to food, work, drugs, or sex.

Codependency derived from the term “co-alcoholic”, which originates in studies of relatives of drug addicts who interfered with recovery by enabling them.

Family therapists discovered that her codependent behavior developed in her childhood growing up in a dysfunctional family. In the 1940s, the German psychoanalyst and humanist Karen Horney wrote about neurotic behavior caused by self-alienation. He described the personality types that conform to codependency and believes that they are the result of faulty parenting and the “tyranny of shoulds.”

The 12-Step Codependent Anonymous (CoDA) program was founded in 1986 by Ken and Mary, two therapists who had grown up in abusive families.

Definitions

Codependency is considered a disorder in the American Psychiatric Association, due to a lack of consensus on a definition and empirical research. However, the Statistical Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders lists a dependent personality disorder, described as someone more passive, submissive, and dependent than most codependents. In 1989, experts at a National Conference came up with a suggested definition: “A pattern of painful dependence on compulsive behaviors and the approval of others in an attempt to find security, self-esteem, and identity.” Other definitions from experts in the field include:

* Melody Beattie: Allowing someone else’s behavior to affect you and becoming obsessed

about controlling that person’s behavior.

* Earnie Larsen: a decreased ability to initiate or participate in romantic relationships.

* Robert Subby: As a result of prolonged exposure to oppressive rules.

* John Bradshaw & Pia Melody: A symptom of abandonment – a loss of one’s inner reality and an addiction to outer reality.

* Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse: a brain disorder that leads codependents to seek relief from calming brain chemicals, which are released through compulsive behaviors, including addiction to work, substances, gambling, food, sex and relationships.

* Charles Whitfield: a disease of a lost individuality.

Beattie and Larsen’s definition focuses on the behavior of relationships. I agree with Bradshaw, Melody, and Whitfield that codependency resides with us, whether or not we are in a relationship. I also agree with Wegscheider-Cruse that addicts are codependent and that relief is sought through substances, processes, and people. However, unlike Cruse, I believe that codependency is a learned behavior that is transgenerational. Other influences are cultural and religious prejudices. Although research shows that some teens had brain abnormalities even before they became addicted to drugs, their twins did not become addicted, so the full impact of genetic and organic causes is still unclear, particularly in light of plasticity. of the brain in adolescence.

Fundamental feelings and behavior

Codependent feelings and behaviors vary in degree on a continuum. Like a disease and an addiction, if untreated symptoms become compulsive and worsen in stages over time.

Core feelings include:

  • Denial
  • Low self-esteem
  • Painful emotions: shame, guilt, anger and resentment, anxiety, depression
  • Core behaviors include:

  • Dependence
  • Privacy issues
  • Dysfunctional communication
  • Dysfunctional boundaries
  • Control of self and / or others (includes care)
  • Core feelings and behaviors create other problems, such as pleasing people, self-doubt, mistrust, perfectionism, high reactivity, empowerment, and obsessions. Codependents tend to be more in tune with other people’s needs and feelings than with their own. To calm the anxiety of rejection, they try to adjust to others, while ignoring their own needs, wants, and feelings. As a result, they tend to lose their autonomy, particularly in intimate relationships. Over time, their self-esteem declines due to self-alienation and / or allowing others to devalue them.

Codependents have varied personalities, and symptoms differ in type and severity from one another. They also have various styles of accessories. Not everyone is a caregiver or even in a relationship. Some seek closeness, while others avoid it. Some are addicted, bullying, selfish, and needy, or they may appear independent and confident, but are trying to control, or are controlled by, a personal relationship or their addiction. Sometimes that relationship is with an addict or narcissist. A one-sided relationship or one marked by addiction or abuse is a sign of codependency. But not all codependent relationships are one-sided or abusive.

    Recovery

Untreated codependency can lead to anxiety, depression, and serious health problems. There is help for recovery and change. Recovery goes through stages that normalize codependent symptoms. The goal of recovery is to be a fully functioning adult who:

  • Authentic
  • Autonomous
  • Capable of intimacy
  • Assertive and congruent in the expression of values, feelings and needs.
  • Flexible without rigid thoughts or behaviors
  • Inform yourself. Get guidance and support. Codependent patterns are deeply ingrained habits that are difficult to identify and change on your own. An experienced third party is often needed to identify them and suggest alternative beliefs and responses. 12 step therapy and meetings provide this. In recovery, you will:

  • Come out of denial
  • Let the others go
  • Build an autonomous self
  • Raise your self esteem
  • Find pleasure: develop friends, hobbies
  • Heal past wounds
  • Learn to be assertive and set limits
  • Pursue bigger goals and passions
  • Self-help and therapy

Codependency is highly recoverable, but it requires effort, courage, and proper treatment. A therapist should be knowledgeable about treating codependency, shame, and self-esteem, as well as being able to teach healthier communication and behavior skills. Cognitive behavioral therapy is effective in increasing self-esteem and changing codependent thinking, feelings, and behavior. In some cases, trauma therapy is also indicated.

Recovery can lead to more anxiety, so it is important to maintain a self-help support system such as the 12-step Al-Anon or CoDA programs to build self-esteem and be more assertive.

EBay antique sales: dire downtrends continue into 2016

EBay Antiques: A Dead Market in 2016/17?

It’s been about 2 years since I last wrote about this topic and I thought I’d share some developments since then.

    The context

Let’s give it some credibility to begin with, I hope. Who am I and what real knowledge do I have on this topic?

Well, I’ve been selling antiques (mostly watches, silver watches, and some militaria items) on eBay since 2004. In total that’s around 12-13 years so I know what I’m talking about.

That’s why when I say that eBay has been practically dead as a sales channel since 2013/4, I speak with knowledge.

    Who is it for?

Why am I bothering? That’s simple because my target audience consists of two broad categories of readers:

    • buyers / collectors, wondering where all the old “ open bidding ” eBay deals have gone and

    • new antique dealers who have a passion for old things and think they can combine that with making a profit.

In this article, my messages to both parties will not be warm and welcoming, but harsh statements of fact. Be careful!

    Today’s reality

It’s almost impossible to get solid statistics on this topic, but I’ve seen some sources suggesting that, globally, only about 1 in 6 old listings on eBay actually result in a sale. Most of them are of the cheap and cheerful variety consisting of items (of any gender) priced under 50 ($ / £ / Euro). For anything of higher quality and therefore of value, the figure is likely to be MUCH lower.

Generally speaking, if you offer an item for sale at a fixed price (or minimum initial bid level), it will almost certainly not sell. If you bid open with a low start and expect “a hit”, 90% of the time you will be disappointed and take a loss.

    An exaggeration?

Well, take this as an example. I recently experimented with open zero offer on a late 19th century French bronze piece (an urn) in the art nouveau style. It was about 15 cm tall and it was something very beautiful. It was sold for 0.50p – yes, you saw it correctly, 0.50 PENCE!

    New dealerships – BE CAREFUL

For dealers, this kind of thing is a catastrophe.

You can keep advertising all you want and help make eBay even richer, but generally speaking, unless you cut your prices to deficit levels, you won’t sell anything. If you advertise at a fixed price or realistic starting prices, your ad will be ignored.

Now I know that there is always an exception. Sometimes a piece will work fine, but they are the rarity. I speak with hundreds of distributors in many countries and the message is the same “eBay is a disaster for quality item sales“.

So, remember the next time you watch one of those vintage TV shows where people make a lot of money; it is very likely that he is on the scene and some of the valuations of objects that are “found” during the hunt are totally ridiculous. Most of what you buy on sale will be caught or end up selling at a loss.

*** MAIN ADVICE FOR NEW DEALERS ***. One of the most common things I see now is novice traders walking the markets and estate clearance sales with the dreaded smartphone in hand. Over and over again, I hear them looking at an item and then frantically searching eBay for it and enthusiastically proclaiming to the person who is with them “look, people are asking XYZ amount for these on eBay, so this price here must be cheap”. Just yesterday I saw that happen no less than four times in a large property sale.

WRONG! There is a big difference between the prices that people who order an item on eBay see and the actual value of the item for a professional. Some people on eBay ask for sums that are almost 100% higher than the realistic retail value of the item. They have no chance of selling their items for a price even remotely close to what they are asking for.

Remember as a professional that you need to base your idea of how much you want to buy an object with the idea of reselling it, based on what you have seen other SOLD in a retail environment like eBay. and then pay maybe 75% less than that to give you room for taxes, expenses and profit margins, etc.

    Antique buyers and lovers

Now there is or should be a useful lesson here for you too.

For every merchant I speak to who complains about eBay, I speak to probably 3 collectors / buyers who complain that good antiques can no longer be found on the forum or, more correctly, not reasonably priced.

Now this is the conundrum: what do you mean by “reasonable prices”? Right now, too many buyers interpret that to mean “next to nothing.” So they don’t bid, buy, or bid, instead waiting in the hope that sellers will be desperate to advertise their products in an open zero-start offering, at which point they’ll get what they want for next to nothing.

In a sense, that’s fair enough, but keep in mind that this attitude has helped virtually eliminate eBay as a viable antiques trading leader. If you think the price is not that bad, please buy it! Don’t be paralyzed by indecision and wind up doing nothing in hopes of seeing you again soon at a lower price.

If you maintain your current behaviors, selling antiques online in an open bidding context will become a thing of the past. You will return to expensive High Street antique shops with high prices or the same online. It’s the buyers who are killing eBay now, so if you’re one, don’t complain about their demise!

    General market forces

One last contributing factor to consider.

It makes no difference that people are simply not buying antiques, of any kind, in the way that they did before 2008 and possibly even 2013. Suddenly the heat has just left the market. There are strange “hot spots”, like Chinese art, that can flare up for a few months before fading, but in general, people just aren’t interested in buying.

That, of course, is hitting eBay hard.

This is not unique. Fashions come and go and while everyone suddenly wants (for example) shoddy Scandinavian-style flat furniture, albeit with clean design lines, antique dealers specializing in solid wood furniture from bygone eras will be hugely successful. .

These things go in cycles and have been seen before. This “antiques are boring” cycle may last longer than others like this I’ve seen in the past, but it will regress.

When you do, you can help get things back on eBay, assuming there’s any viable eBay antiques market left to pick up!

Run, Hide or Fight: Survive the storm of a massive shooter

A few years ago I went and got my mass shooter certification. Although I rarely do work in crisis situations anymore, I thought the skill set would be beneficial if only on a personal level. But as the number of these shootings continues to rise, I have found myself taking more and more workouts. I’m not sure how or why it has gotten so bad, but it is an issue that we can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to.

The sad reality is that we experience a mass shooting every day or two here in the states. A mass shooting is defined as 4 or more people shot or killed in one incident. And without turning this into the great debate on gun control laws, I want to focus on what you need to know to have the best chance of survival, should you find yourself in one. After completing various trainings and speaking with numerous law enforcement agencies, here are some things to keep in mind.

Long before a mass shooting happens, you need to be proactive and have a plan. Not just personally, but suggest it to your office manager, principal, or whoever is in charge of the building. Having these systems in place increases your chances of survival exponentially. And take another step. If you have children, teach them too.

When it comes to creating a plan, the first thing you can and should do is have a mental health counselor, coach, or provider on site. Just as schools and universities have counselors, companies must have EAPs. If you choose to forego a traditional EAP, do your best to have some resource available for your staff to avoid everyday stressors. The next thing to do is adopt a “see something, say something” policy without fear of retaliation. Almost 60% of mass shooters have a connection to the location of the shooting. With that in mind, “see something, say something” and the availability of EAP can have a huge impact on a potential incident.

When there is a mass shooting, by the sound of the first shot, chaos ensues. The average time a mass shooting lasts is 5 to 15 minutes. Every second counts. So let me break down your options if you hear that first shot. The model that seems to be the most effective is Run, Hide, or Fight.

The first thing to do is take a deep breath to compose yourself and quickly do a threat assessment. If you can escape, do it. That is why it is important to control your breathing. Making deliberate movements could mean the difference between life and death. But know that you must act quickly. Inaction or delayed movement kills people. If running is not an option, hide. Knowing that these events generally end in minutes, take the following steps immediately.

    1. If you are in a room, close the door. If the door doesn’t have a lock, put as much as you can in front of the door.

    2. Turn off the light. After looking at data from approved mass shooter events, rooms with lights out are often overlooked.

    3. If the door has a window, cover it. If you can’t cover it for some reason, move everyone in the room out of line of sight from the window. {This is an action item to take the next time you walk into your office or classroom.} Just stand outside and look out the window. Make a note of where the line of sight stops. Better yet, put a few pieces of masking tape on the floor to indicate where it is safe to stand.

    4. Turn off the phones. As soon as a mass shooting starts, silence your phone. You don’t want a call or text message to come from an interested party to reveal your position. If you can call the police, do so quickly. Again, you don’t want to reveal your position. If talking is going to put you in danger, don’t do it. Another action item is knowing if you can text 911. 911 text is available in many areas, but you need to know it well in advance of a crisis situation. Get that information today.

    5. If the door won’t close, don’t all stay together. This will only make it easier for the person with the gun. It’s called target availability. Most assault rifles will have a 30-40 round magazine. It would take special forces technical skill to hit most of the people if they are all spread out in different places within the room.

The last resort option is fighting. If you have nowhere to go, you must prepare to fight. Take advantage of everything you can. Remember this is not a fair fight. So don’t fight fair. Take advantage of the angles and doors. If you can get two people to stand on either side of a door, position yourself that way. The gun is the biggest threat, so grab the gun. Someone hits high and someone hits low. If you have a pen, use it. Any weapon that may be should be used.

Don’t stand across the room and throw something. Once again, you have given up your position and there is a direct line of sight that allows you to dispose of your target. The more people rush to open the door, the better. Yes, some will get shot. But this tactic outperforms the alternative.

Consider your options to run, hide, or fight. Review your action items and know your plan. Ask your boss or supervisor to practice a drill once a month in an active shooter scenario. Note “see something say something”. It is far better to be proactive than reactive. Know your environment. Whether you are in a building that you have passed every week for the last decade or it is your first time visiting. Ask yourself the following questions.

    Where are the exits?

Are there any barriers or obstructions preventing you from exiting?

Where are you if you are separated from a loved one?

Get in the habit of doing this. Have a plan.

There are other things you need to know. When putting together your mass shooting plan, you need to prepare for the worst case scenario. I asked one of the local sheriffs the other night what is something the public would be surprised to know about a mass shooting incident. He said it could literally take hours to clean the building or surroundings, which would mean that many victims en masse could bleed out and die. So, as you come up with your mass shooters plan, be sure to include a few people who go through the trauma-related first aid course. The bailiff spoke extensively about knowing how to use a tourniquet. He said put them on high or you will die. He encouraged me to encourage my clients to prepare a trauma first aid kit and have one available on each floor.

We must remember that the police are not there to help us. They are not going to classify the wounded. Its sole purpose is to end the threat of violence. For this reason, we must be able to help ourselves until the environment is deemed safe and EMS can begin treating the victims. Be vigilant when the police enter a room. You must have your hands in the air or visible {like at a traffic stop} and not have the phone in your hand. They’re making split-second decisions while full of adrenaline. You don’t want to get shot because a cell phone is mistaken for a gun.

    * Average police response time to an active shooter is 3 to 4 minutes. There is a new directive that many law enforcement agencies state that they enter as soon as they arrive on the scene. Some departments wait to gain a tactical advantage. This seems to change. I can also speak to some agencies that are training medical personnel to enter the scene of the active shooter with the police to treat the critical wounded on the spot and in real time. “The most important thing that I am learning from my conversations and trainings is the need to update and modify how to deal with an active shooter.

Depending on the budget of your company or school, you can buy bulletproof doors. Starting with just a couple of greats each, this is maybe another option to build on your massive shot plan. There are also very affordable door locking, locking and wedging mechanisms {100.00-200.00 per device} that every business and school should have.

The last thing I want to mention is knowing how many people are supposed to be in your building on any given day. Whether it’s staff or students, you must have an accountability system. You should be able to quickly find out who is posted and who is not. This will be helpful to the police and other stakeholders such as family members etc.

There are many threat assessment programs available. Find one and take a training. This article is a start. Develop a plan. Nobody wants to believe that they will ever be in an active shooter scenario. But, with the number of shootings increasing in volume, and as the causality count worsens with each event, information is unfortunately necessary for everyone. Please don’t delay.

The 5 best arcade games of the 80s

I remember as a kid I wanted to go to the local store to play the latest arcade games from the 1980s. My friends and I dug up as many coins as we could find and spent countless hours playing these innovative games. The late 70s and early 80s were known as the “golden age” of the arcade game industry. These games became very popular during this time, in part due to new types of gameplay involving hand-eye coordination, skill, timing, and shooting things as fast as possible. The arcade games industry peaked in 1982 generating $ 8 billion in quarters, equivalent to $ 18.5 billion in 2011! These are our top 5.

    5. Defender

I remember this was an extremely difficult game, yet very challenging and entertaining to play. The objective of the game is to fight off waves of invading aliens while protecting the astronauts on an alien planet. Astronauts captured by aliens return as mutants to attack you. If you didn’t protect the astronauts, the planet would explode and fill with mutants. Defender garnered high praise for its audio and video and was listed as the sixth arcade game for technical, creative and cultural impact by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2008. It is considered one of the most difficult games in the industry. , using a joystick and five other buttons to play. Defender sold 60,000 units of hardware and generated gross revenue of $ 1 billion through 2002.

    4. Ms. Pac-Man

At number 4 is the girlfriend of the original Pac-Man with 125,000 units of hardware sold. Although she never got her man, she managed to entertain millions of people around the world. She was also a television star, appearing on the animated television series Pac-Man where she played Pepper, Pac-Man’s wife. The objective of the game was to eat all the balls and prevent the ghosts from scoring as many points as possible. Eating certain power granules allowed him to eat the ghosts and there were also fruit bonuses that, when consumed, increased the value in points. As you reach higher levels, the ghosts move faster and the energy balls change to the ghosts for less time. Ms. Pac-Man wears a small red bow and scenes from her relationship with Pac-Man are shown during intermissions between levels. Another notable feature that differs from the original Pac-Man game is that the orange ghost is named Sue, rather than Clyde. The game is said to have 256 levels, but I’ve obviously never gotten this far!

    3. Donkey Kong

This was one of my favorites to play with as a kid. The game was groundbreaking for its time and featured an ape, a damsel in distress, and an Italian plumber performing a crazy story. Mario, a carpenter, climbs platforms and climbs stairs at a construction site while the ape named Donkey Kong throws barrels at him. Mario must also dodge fire and other obstacles to reach the top of the platforms and rescue the damsel who is holding the grumpy Donkey Kong. Mario became Nintendo’s flagship character and spawned several different game sequels. Nintendo originally wanted to make a Popeye comic book game, but was unable to obtain a license for it. They decided to develop their own characters and created a love triangle between an ape, a carpenter, and a girlfriend, which was similar to the love triangle between Popeye, Bluto, and Olive Oyl. Donkey Kong was created in 1981 and sold 132,000 units of hardware and generated 280 million dollars until 1982.

    2. Space Invaders

This is probably one of the most addictive games I have ever played. When it finally came out on the Atari 2600, my friends and I played it for hours on end. The game consists of a laser cannon at the bottom of the screen that moves from side to side as you shoot the waves of approaching alien invaders. After shooting the first wave of aliens, the remaining ones begin to approach much faster. Soon the aliens start shooting and there are bunkers under which you can move to avoid their fire. Eventually the bunkers are destroyed by the aliens shooting at them, making the game even more challenging. The sound effects are hauntingly exciting as you play. Although this game was released in 1978, we decided to include it on this list due to its impact on the video game industry. It was so advanced for its time and was almost solely responsible for expanding the video game industry from a novelty to a global industry. It sold 360,000 units of hardware and generated $ 2.7 billion in gross revenue.

    1. Pac-Man

This was everyone’s grandfather! What made Pac-Man so popular was its appeal to both genders. While many of the early games involved space and aliens, Pac-Man was a game that almost anyone could enjoy regardless of their interests. It was basically the same concept as Ms. Pac-Man, except it was released before her. The goal was to eat all the marbles and prevent the ghosts from scoring as many points as possible. The ghost’s movements are preset and given its own personality to help keep the game interesting. The red ghost chases Pac-Man and the pink and blue ghosts try to get in front of Pac-Man. The orange ghost, Clyde, chases after Pac-Man but moves to the lower left corner of the screen when he gets too close to him. The game has 255 levels, but a bug in the programming prevents you from going beyond that. Pac-Man is one of the highest grossing games of all time. It has 400,000 units of hardware sold with gross revenue of $ 3.5 billion!

Artificial Intelligent Auxiliary Devices and the Future Big Government Surveillance

Today, people are debating who has the best artificial intelligence assistant. Is it Apple with Siri, Amazon with Alexa, or Google with the Google Assistant (I guess it’s simple)? Tomorrow, however, the debate will not be who has the best artificial intelligence assistant, but who spies the least on our privacy. Who listens to our conversations in the background all the time, which ones use that information to better serve us, and which ones keep a record of everything that was said? Yes, creepy, right? Of course, in the future there probably won’t be a false belief that privacy exists, something that makes us baby boomers cringe.

These AI assistants need to learn from customer feedback how to answer all questions and what kinds of questions are most likely to be asked; Through this artificial intelligence learning, they improve and are therefore more valuable to us and our efforts, in some cases. period, they will be so valuable that we will not care that we are giving up our privacy, will we? Ah ha, now I got you thinking. How soon will all this happen? Well I’d say it’s slowing down right now, and if you’re paying attention, I bet you’d be a little more alarmed at how fast it’s happening. In other words, this is what I have to say: tomorrow becomes today and once it is here, it is here to stay.

There was a rather revealing article on CNET titled; “Police Request Echo Recordings”, written by Alfred Ng and published on December 27, 2016. This article read:

“You have the right to remain silent, but your smart devices may not. Amazon’s Echo and Echo Dots are now in millions of homes, and holiday sales have quadrupled from 2015. Always listening to your word of caution , the innovative smart speakers have seven microphones waiting to take and record your commands. “

Interestingly, a technology that can prove guilt can also prove innocence, which is a fact that I was recently reminded of when I was on jury duty. If we ever get to Vannevar Bush’s concept of “recording a life” from cradle to grave; every song you heard, every movie you watched, every sport you played, every book you read, every place you went, every word you said, all recorded from the moment you were born to the moment of your death, again a little creepy but you can see we’re almost there

Like Santa Claus, these devices will; Know when it’s been good or bad, so be good for crying out loud! “What about the other verse of the note: You better be careful, you better not pout, I’m telling you why? Okay, think about it, and remember Be Big, Don’t Hesitate!

Key Concepts in Social Network Analysis 1 – Nodes and Links

A general understanding of the concept of social media has emerged in the past decade, primarily as a result of the popularity of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. However, both the mobilization of social networks to achieve objectives and the study of the structure and function of these social arrangements have been carried out for much longer than the relatively recent and very rapid adoption of communication technologies seems to imply. enabling information and communication. . Social Media Analysis (SRA) is proving to be a powerful tool for understanding collective action. It has its origin in the sociological study of small groups and interpersonal relationships, especially as described in the works of Georg Simmel (1858-1918), and in the representative and analytical techniques developed in the branch of mathematics known as theory of graphs.

The two fundamental concepts at the core of SNA are nodes and links. Nodes are the discrete social objects that make up the network, such as individuals, communities, organizations, or countries. Links or ties identify and describe the relationships between nodes and can differ in at least four ways.

The quality of a link refers to the substantive nature of the relationship between the nodes, be it friendship, romance, teamwork, or membership in the same voluntary association. The amount of a tie refers to the relative strength of the relationship it represents. For example, we consider some of our friends to be better or closer than others, perhaps on the basis of a deeper emotional bond or some shared experience. Multiplexity represents the idea that the relationship between nodes can be based on more than one quality. So, for example, you may have a romantic relationship with someone you work with. Therefore, the tie between the two of you would have a multiplexity of two. Symmetry refers to the amount of reciprocity between nodes, with respect to a particular link. So if one of your friends assesses the strength of your friendship in the same way as you do, then this relationship is very symmetrical. However, if a friend or family member trusts you for moral support more than you trust them, then this is not a symmetrical relationship.

Social media can also differ in size and scale. The number of nodes can be limited to members of an immediate or extended family, or it can expand to the hundreds of thousands of followers that some celebrities have on Facebook. These fan-based links can be extremely asymmetrical, as in the case of fake news icon Stephen Colbert, who has more than four million followers on Twitter and yet doesn’t follow anyone. The size of the network tends to illustrate the phenomenon known as cumulative advantage, or what mathematicians call the power law. What this means is that as the number of your connections increases, you are likely to see a very dramatic increase in the number of connections, as if your initial set of connections is not establishing connections of its own.

The scale of a network is a measure of how geographically distributed the network is, whether it is limited to a neighborhood, for example, or covers a region, nation, or the world. Sticking with celebrities for a moment, authors like Paolo Coelho and Orhan Pamuk, whose novels have sold millions of copies in multiple languages, attract a huge following on social media sites around the world. In this way, individuals who would otherwise probably never know of the existence of others have the potential to interact through the node that represents their common interest in contemporary literature.

Moving away from social media and the type of highly asymmetric networks associated with celebrities, in 1973 Stanford University sociologist Mark Granovetter published an article called “The Strength of Weak Ties.” In this much-cited work, the author clearly demonstrates the potential of ANS when he can demonstrate that acquaintances are actually more important than close friends when it comes to job hunting.

The next article in the series will take a closer look at some characteristics of network connections.

New book offers practical advice on setting peaceful boundaries

Dave Jetson’s new book Setting True Bo limits is the kind of book everyone can benefit from. Life can be very complicated when we let other people run our lives for us, when we don’t learn to say no, when we spend our time worrying about the feelings of others or seeking to satisfy their desires, and when we spend all of our time on their own. needs or letting them mistreat and take advantage of us. Unfortunately, most of us learn the hard way that having no limits results in a messy and usually not very happy life.

Jetson begins this book by using an example of a basketball game that has no rules or limits. The result is chaos for everyone involved. Even fans have to move to the highest stands for safety. Without limits (the rules of the game), a game of basketball is really impossible.

The same is true of our lives. Without limits, nobody is happy. Even teenagers will tell you, as Jetson points out, that they want their parents to set limits so that it is clear what is expected of them and that they feel safe knowing what the rules are.

However, setting limits is not easy. Jetson knows that many people fear setting limits because they don’t want to upset other people. However, while setting limits creates some initial discomfort, it benefits everyone involved in the long run.

Jetson first explains what the true limits are. They have three components: limits, consequences, and consistent enforcement and monitoring. It provides numerous examples to explain these components, dedicating a chapter to each one. We see how boundary setting improves marriages, improves parent-child relationships, and even helps the workplace run smoothly.

Jetson also explains what limits are not. Too often, people try to set limits but fail because they don’t understand the three components of limit setting. They mistake a threat or an ultimatum for a limit, or just set a limit without providing a consequence or following through. For example, a parent can set a limit by telling a child that if they forget to bring their homework to school again, they will have to get a zero instead of the parent bringing it to school. However, if the parent brings homework to school the next time the child forgets it, the child will not learn to respect boundaries.

Jetson explains that people often overreact when setting limits, and they do so to punish rather than create a limit that everyone can benefit from. We have to show respect to the person with whom we are setting the boundary. We cannot control someone with a limit, but we can give that person a choice. As Jetson explains, “When you create true limits, you are not controlling others or their behavior. You are allowing them to choose the positive or negative consequence for the behavior they choose to act on.”

It’s also important to be emotionally neutral when setting limits. Jetson says this emotional neutrality is often called “loving detachment.” For example, when someone violates a limit, the one who sets the limit chooses not to take the action personally and does not comply with the consequences in a punitive way depending on his emotional state. For example, if reacting from an emotional state, a parent can send the following message to a child: “If I’m in a bad mood, I might punish you; if I’m in a good mood, I might not.” Instead, if a limit is set correctly, then the consequences have been specified and can be carried out without emotion. As Jetson says, “The one who sets the limits may feel some sadness or pain if the other person does not respect a limit and yet the deep emotions are not triggered or increased.

In addition to showing us how to set actual limits, Jetson looks at why we’ve had trouble setting limits in the past. Talk about topics ranging from fear to manipulation to codependency. Codependency is ultimately the underlying problem in all boundary-setting problems. Jetson describes codependency as “a false belief that we should put other people’s emotions, needs and desires before our own. We have some resentment about this, and we continue to act as if our own feelings and needs are secondary because we have been taught that we don’t matter. ” In addition, he clarifies: “Believing that we have to live life in such a way that we do not disturb anyone is actually another way of describing codependency.” By learning to set true limits, we can begin to break the cycle of codependency that often afflicts our families.

Parents will especially appreciate the examples Jetson includes of how children can learn to set limits with other adults and with other children, including their siblings. The example you offer of a student being bullied by a teacher is one that teaches true respect for the people involved in the situation and will show children how to be assertive rather than being bullied by others.

Each chapter of Setting True Limits ends with exercise questions to help readers examine their own relationships where limits may need to be set, and then practice what they have learned by setting those limits.

Setting true limits is a phenomenal guide to creating better relationships with everyone in your life. I know this because I have used many of the techniques in this book myself as a codependent in recovery. My life is calmer, happier, more productive, and more relaxing as a result of setting limits; therefore, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is time for you to enjoy a peaceful life and also meaningful relationships.

Yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British Overseas Territory, located in the northern Caribbean Sea east of Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. They are part of the Leeward Islands chain. The approximate coordinates are 18 ° 20 ‘N 64 ° 40’ W. The archipelago of the Virgin Islands archipelago is made up of the United States Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

The British Virgin Islands enjoy a subtropical climate, moderated by the trade winds. Temperatures remain fairly stable throughout the year with a daily maximum of around 29 ° C in summer and 25 ° C in winter. BVIs average about 115 cm of rain per year, although this is higher in the hills and the coast is drier. The rainiest months are from September to December. The British Virgin Islands is in an area that can see hurricanes from June to October and this effectively limits the boating season from November to May.

Among the many attractions of the British Virgin Islands are; numerous white sand beaches; the baths in Virgin Gorda, snorkeling in the coral reefs near Anegada; the famous bars of Jost Van Dyke Island.

The British Virgin Islands include the main islands of Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda along with more than fifty smaller islands and cays. The smaller islands include; Beef Island, Cooper Island, Ginger Island, Great Camanoe, Great Thatch, Guana Island, Mosquito Island, Necker Island, Norman Island, Peter Island, Salt Island. Only about fifteen of the islands are inhabited. The British Virgin Islands are mostly volcanic in origin and have rugged and mountainous terrain. Anegada is the exception and is a flat island made up of limestone and coral. Tortola is the largest island, approximately twelve miles long and three miles wide. Road Town, in Tortola, is the capital of the islands. The British Virgin Islands have a total population of around 22,000 people.

The Virgin Islands were first colonized by the Arawak Indians of South America around 100 BC. C. and they inhabited the islands until the XV century when the Carib Indians of the Lesser Antilles Islands displaced them. The first European sighting of the Virgin Islands was in 1493 by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas. He called them Saint Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins (Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins); this was reduced to Las Vírgenes (The Virgins).

In the early 16th century, the Spanish Empire acquired the Virgin Islands and developed copper mining on Virgin Gorda. Subsequently, the English, Dutch, French, Spanish, and Danish sought control of the Virgin Islands. They became a well-known pirate haven. During the process of European colonization, the native Amerindian population was practically annihilated.

In 1648, the Dutch established a permanent settlement on the island of Tortola. The British captured Tortola from the Dutch in 1672, and the British annexation of Anegada and Virgin Gorda followed in 1680.

The Virgin Islands were primarily considered a strategic possession, but were also planted when favorable economic conditions existed. The British introduced sugar cane which became the main crop and source of foreign trade. Slaves were brought in from Africa to work on the sugar cane plantations and the islands prospered until the growth of the sugar beet crop in Europe and the United States significantly reduced sugar cane production.

In 1917, the United States bought St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix from Denmark for $ 25 million, renaming them the United States Virgin Islands, and the British renamed the islands they controlled as the British Virgin Islands. The British Virgin Islands were administered as part of the Colony of the Leeward Islands or with Saint Kitts and Nevis, with an administrator representing the British Government in the Islands. The British Virgin Islands obtained separate colony status in 1960 and became autonomous in 1967.

Since then, the BVIs have moved away from an agricultural economy towards tourism and financial services and have become one of the richest areas in the Caribbean. Politically, tourism is the more important of the two, as it employs a large number of the local population and many of the businesses are locally owned. However, economically, the financial services sector is by far the most important, providing almost 50% of government revenue in the form of license fees for offshore companies.

Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, also known as Beef Island Airport, has regular connections to San Juan, Puerto Rico and Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands. There are also flights from most of the main Caribbean islands, Antigua and Saint Martin. It is located on Beef Island, just off the eastern tip of Tortola. Virgin Gorda and Anegada have smaller airports. The islands are a popular destination for Caribbean cruises and use the main port of the British Virgin Islands at Road Town on Tortola. The official currency of the British Virgin Islands is the US dollar. Major credit cards are accepted in larger establishments in the British Virgin Islands, but don’t expect to use them in small restaurants.

The traditional music of the British Virgin Islands is called mushrooms for the local cornmeal dish of the same name, often made with okra. The special sound of mushrooms is due to a unique local fusion between African and European music. Mushroom bands, also called “scratch bands and use a wide variety of instruments. Fingi is a festive dance form, but it also contains humorous social commentary and is a source for BVI oral history.

The British Virgin Islands are one of the most popular yacht charter destinations in the Caribbean and Tortola is home to the world’s largest charter fleet of yachts. Potential charters can choose between a skippered or bareboat charter. Motor or sailing boats. Monohulls or catamarans. Short distances between the islands, often just 2-3 hours, make the British Virgin Islands perfect for first-time yacht charters and families with young children. There are many flights to the BVI that facilitate access. On the downside, the British Virgin Islands can get crowded during peak periods; Christmas; Presidents’ Week and Easter. The first two weeks of July are also very busy due to the Puerto Rico vacation schedule. Charter yachts require a national park permit; ask your rental company for more details.

    Moorings are becoming increasingly popular in the British Virgin Islands to prevent anchors from dragging on the bottom and damaging important coral reefs. Although cynics will tell you it’s about raising revenue too, and at $ 30 a night, it’s hard not to sympathize with this view. Night moorings are on 18 “white balls. Other mooring buoys will be found while sailing in the BVIs and are color coded as follows;

Orange: not diver, for day use only.

Yellow – Commercial dive boats only.

Large yellow: commercial vessels or vessels over 55 ‘in length

White: non-commercial boats, for day use only.

    Blue: for boat use only

Also note that there is a 90 minute time limit on all moorings.

The main port of the British Virgin Islands is at Road Town on Tortola. And most letters start and end here. Village Cay Marina is one of the full service marinas available in Road Harbor offering fuel, water, ice, provisioning, laundry, showers, salon and spa. There is a freshwater swimming pool and a restaurant and bar facing the sea. Other marinas in Road Town Harbor include Fort Burt Marina and Inner Harbor Marina. There is also another full service marina on Nanny Cay that offers another starting point for yacht charters. The Nanny Cay Marine Center has amenities including showers, water, gift shop, laundry, ice and fuel, provisioning, storage lockers, and two restaurants. There is also a dive shop, mechanical repairs, refrigeration, welding, and a 24-hour boat chase service. Allow time at the beginning or end of your yacht charter to explore Tortola. Driving the steep and winding mountain roads of the island offers stunning views. Some of the best beaches in all of the British Virgin Islands are found at Cane Garden Bay and Long Bay, on the north coast of Tortolas. Tortola restaurants are highly regarded throughout the Caribbean. Shopping and nightlife tend to be low-key, but a selection of small clubs playing local music can be found in Road Town and at the beach bars around Tortola.

West End is shown on the charts as Soper’s Hole, a sheltered harbor that sits between Frenchman’s Cay and Tortola. The Soper’s Hole Wharf and Marina offers a full range of services located in charming colored houses. The Pusser’s Landing offers oceanfront dining at two restaurants and bars, an outdoor terrace and the company store.

Jost Van Dyke Island is named after a Dutch pirate. It has beautiful beaches, good food, and music. Jost Van Dyke is home to the famous “Full Moon” parties held at Foxy’s and Sidney’s Peace and Love Bar.

Anegada Island is known for its beautiful pink and sugary sand beach and for diving with ancient shipwrecks and coral reefs. Anegada’s Reef Hotel is famous for the local lobster. The dining room and bar are directly on the beach. If you disembark in Anegada, bring insect repellent. You have been warned !!!

Moorings are available and it is possible to anchor along the Virgin Gorda coast. Or you can get a mooring at the nearby Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, a marina with berth for 110 boats, where the ferry arrives for land travelers. The shops are concentrated around the Yacht Harbor area, especially in the Courtyard. Virgin Gorda Island is famous for The Baths, a full day of exploring caves and wells within this unique rock formation. Boats are no longer allowed on the shore here and you must swim from a mooring to the beach. The Bitter End Yacht Club is located on North Sound and is a great place to pick up a mooring. You will be among some of the beautiful yachts in the BVI here. The small desert island of Prickly Pear is a great place for lunch and snorkelling and is just a boat ride from the Bitter End Yacht Club. Spanish Town, on the southwest side of Virgin Gorda, is a popular stop for shopping and stocking up.

Norman Island or “Treasure Island” as the locals know it is the home of the pirate ship “William Thornton”. Legend suggests that this is the legendary Long John Silvers treasure site. Norman Island sits near the border line that separates the BVI from the US Virgin Islands.Although uninhabited, it is alive with tourism. The caves here are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the BVI. This is a popular overnight anchorage and many charterers will dine aboard the Willy T, a 100 ‘steel schooner.
