Guide to SERP Ranking – How to Level Up Your Website’s SERP Ranking

SERP (Search Engine Results Page) ranking is the most desirable place you want to have for your website. That is the result of any query or question on Google. Higher SERP ranking will ensure more traffic to your website. This will ensure high conversion rates. Here is a promising guide to getting a better ranking.

Let’s first learn the Google SERP ranking game.

STEP -1 Attractive titles with suitable keywords

The title of your content is the first thing the user sees. It must be attractive enough, showing the ability to answer queries. And you must have keywords that can lead to relevant search results.

Google’s algorithm shows the most informative results. In their mission statement, they say it is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

You need to ensure trustworthy content for viewers once they launch your site. This is based on B2B or B2C searches. The easy way to do this is by creating attractive titles. These have to serve the purpose of the search. They have to be promising enough. For example, anyone searching for ‘tricks for cash back’ will gravitate more towards a title like “10 Best Tricks for Getting Amazing Cash Back”. Instead of a simple one like “money back cheats”.

Developing new SEO strategies for your site is the next step. For that we know-

STEP-2 Understanding the Google Algorithm.

According to Moz, there are about 500-600 changes to the algorithm. Google executives like Gary Illyes and John Mueller in one way or another confirmed it. So stay updated on new algorithm changes.

It may appear that your site is banned due to low traffic. But Google doesn’t always publicly declare changes.

For example, the April 2015 Mobile-Friendly Update. Complies with favoring sites that are mobile-friendly. It may also impose sanctions on those who are not.

The Penguin update in 2012, which is designed to consider the spam search result. Most of the time it is done by buying links to boost Google rankings.

This and several other updates like Panda, Hummingbird, Google EMD, Phantom, Penguin, etc. they tell us a lot about the algorithm.

To keep track of updates, you can visit sites like Moz’s Google Algorithm Change History. Knowing this will help you develop good SEO strategies.

STEP-3 Know your current search ranking.

It is very important to know where you are currently. It is useful to assess its growth. Evaluating your SERP.COM keyword ranking will help you. This shows the number of results in monthly searches, ranking for specific search terms, cost per click for paid search, etc.

There are different analyzes that expose the reasons for the decrease in traffic. One of which is slow sites, this will decrease traffic noticeably. The delay of only 3-4 seconds tends to lose interest in the content. The best example of this is Walmart. WebPerformanceToday stated that Walmart had a sharp decline in conversions after site load times increased by 4 seconds.

To help you with ranking, periodically check your site’s status on PageSpeedInsights.

STEP-4 Maintenance of organic traffic.

Traffic is more on organic sites than on non-organic sites. Visitors trust organic sites more. Non-organic sites, such as paid search and social networks, attract fewer visitors. According to BrightEdge, there were organic sites that attracted more than 51% of B2B and B2C website visitors. And Social was only able to do a mere 5%.

Although there is no harm in advertising your site, only if there are not enough or no results for the given search. In this case, visitors tend to visit non-organic sites as well. In doing so, ROI is the main factor to consider. Also, that PPC adds up nicely to your site with good revenue.

STEP 5 Make your site mobile friendly for better SERP rankings.

If you haven’t made your website mobile friendly, then that’s the first thing you should do now. The Google algorithm favors mobile pages, as we discussed above. Mobile site optimization is a very important step.

Loading speed and a better mobile experience will boost your SERP ranking. One way to do this is to add an AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) stamp to your site results. This is Google’s project to ensure fast loading of mobile pages.

STEP-6 Research is the key

You have to do a lot of research for keywords. The best way to get the best SEO is by creating great content using keywords. Commercial keywords serve this purpose. You have to deliver what the visitor wants.

If a visitor wants information about the search, they must add informational keywords. But if the visitor intends to buy something, the keywords should be in accordance with it.

Research on your competitors is also an important aspect. Knowing what type of content they offer through their site will help you optimize yours.

You can add publication dates to your site content. This will help you if the visitor wants the latest content. Adding a date will bring you more traffic as the visitor can be specific about the dates. You can always update the contents for the latest date.

STEP 7 Use Rich Snippets and better permalinks

The content of a website should answer a question through a short paragraph or searchable listing. Google can automatically feature you in the SERP, which will allow you to gain more traffic.

These are mainly known as Rich Snippets. Adding informative content using appropriate keywords will help. The more traffic will lead to a higher ranking.

Permalinks are something visitors pay more attention to than you might think. If your permalinks consist only of symbols or numbers, visitors are more likely to distrust the site.

Ugly permalinks can cause traffic to drop. Permalinks should consist of keywords or search results. Often times your own title would serve your purpose well.

Altogether, if you follow these simple steps, you could achieve a higher SERP ranking. In the end, for the best assistance, hire a professional company to boost your SERP ranking. So give your website a much-needed boost with the best digital marketing company.

Men, unleash your potential with boxing

Too many men waste their time in the gym doing curls and other exercises to look pretty without really challenging their bodies to be all they could be. Boxing is one of the best exercises that can help you get to the next level.

tear apart

Boxing can be one of the best ways to shed body fat and maintain muscle mass. Research has shown that interval training style, like boxing, is great for losing fat and boosting metabolism. Exercise like traditional aerobic cardio workouts only creates an increase in calories burned during the actual workout that rapidly decreases when the training session ends. But due to a phenomenon known as EPOC (excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption), you have a substantial increase in the number of calories you burn for hours after finishing a boxing workout. Since boxing uses your fast-twitch muscle fibers to deliver fast, powerful punches over and over again, it encourages your body to hold onto muscle and can even increase the size of your muscles, leading to a broad-shouldered appearance. and ripped and not the lean appearance that many Endurance athletes have. So, if you only have a limited amount of time to exercise, try to attend a quality boxing gym near you that will give you better results for your time than a traditional cardio workout like going for a run.

SPEED, POWER, ENDURANCE

Few training styles can give you the full spectrum of physical improvements that boxing can provide. ESPN ranked boxing as the world’s most difficult sport due to all the ingredients that go into the preparation. The main qualities needed to be a great boxer are speed, power, and stamina. These are just a few ways to gain those qualities through boxing training.

SPEED – Hitting a bag or doing glove work demands your muscles fire faster than you’re used to. Every time you hit, you must quickly twist your body, shoot your arm, and bring it back. You must move your feet quickly to get in, out, and around a bag or opponent. Also mixed into a good boxing workout is a variety of plyometrics and other exercises that demand your body to move as fast as possible, forcing you to reach new levels of speed production you might not have thought possible.

POWER: Boxing teaches you to use your entire body to produce maximum power in a punch while delivering it with precision, speed, and balance. The block and squeeze at the end of a punch is a massive contraction of the muscle fibers in your arms and shoulders that occurs the very instant you first make contact with your target. That contact puts a tremendous load on your muscles from your chest muscles to your back muscles, which must bear the brunt of hundreds of pounds of force when you throw a hard punch. When the blows are delivered correctly, you will feel the work that was put into these muscle groups the next day. ENDURANCE: A lot of research has been done over the last two decades on the benefits of high intensity interval training on VO2 max. (a measure of your body’s ability to use oxygen). Interval training, like boxing, has been shown to increase VO2 max. faster and in shorter sessions than constant cardio. Boxing is a great cross-trainer for people who play a variety of sports seriously or for recreation, as it greatly helps build stamina. At the end of the day, boxing is a much more exciting and efficient way to get cardio than running on a treadmill or spending time on a stationary bike.

FUN AND EXCITING

We all know that working out can be fun, but boxing as a workout can be even more fun! Every time you exercise, you get a release of endorphins that make you feel fulfilled and satisfied after a hard workout. With boxing, you get the same feelings, but more. After hard boxing training, you get a sense of achievement and progress when you learn new techniques. The thrill of punching, moving, swinging, weaving and blocking punches is a great thrill that is extremely addictive and will leave you wanting more after every workout!

RELIEVE STRESS

Have you ever been through a super stressful day and just wished you had hit something? Energy like that, if held back for too long, can be detrimental to your interactions with the people around you and those closest to you, leaving you easily frustrated and ready to lose control. People who have made boxing a part of their daily routine can let that frustration out all the time! If you spend 30 minutes to an hour throwing hundreds of punches as hard and fast as you can, you better believe you’ll feel a great sense of relief. When you train boxing, you are using that aggression energy and transferring it into a positive outlet that will not only make you feel great, but look great too!

THE LAST BELL

I highly recommend you try a boxing workout, either in a class or a personal session. To get the most out of your workouts, you need to go to a quality boxing gym and experience what boxing is really all about.

What is the NACPHIL chaplaincy?

NACPHIL specifies its chaplaincy ministry by implementing the Philippine government’s Moral Recovery and Values Formation Program, providing pastoral care and assistance especially to the depressed and oppressed, fulfilling the two (2) Big Ones in the New Testament to fulfill. Jesus Christ summarized the 10 commandments in two and it is about a correct relationship with God and men: the key to lasting peace and prosperity, the necessary tool for a good government.

1) The Great Commandment, love God above all things and love your neighbor. There are only two important laws as the Lord summed up the Ten Commandments of Moses and these are “to love God with all our heart, mind and soul and to love our neighbor (men) as we love ourselves”.

2) The Great Commission of Christ, sharing and teaching the Word of God, and living a model life for godly, well-governed Filipino society.

NACPHIL focuses its chaplaincy program by training religious leaders from different religious groups and affiliations, and denominations to produce qualified and competent chaplains or values formation officers (VFOs). And then deploy them in their respective areas of assignment, and manage and monitor them to ensure their effectiveness in service.

NACPHIL requires each chaplain/VFO to undergo continuing education by attending prescribed Training Courses, Enhancement Seminars, and Spiritual Formation Retreats to maintain and maximize their effectiveness in their respective fields of endeavor.

Primarily, NACPHIL commissions and deploys Chaplains/VFOs in all Barangays, Municipalities/Cities, Provinces, Regions and other government controlled units, departments, offices, agencies and corporations throughout the country. If NACPHIL obtains more trained and qualified chaplains, the rollout will extend to other private institutions, organizations, schools and universities, commercial establishments and corporations, and many more.

In this regard, DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo issued Memorandum Circular No. 2011-58 dated April 25, 2011, directed and addressed to all Provincial Governors, Municipal and City Mayors, Punong Barangays, DILG Regional Directors and other stakeholders to support NACPHIL programs and seminars on moral recovery and values. National training.

With intense prayer the NACPHIL family dreams that one day Moral Recovery and Formation in Values (or Chaplaincy) will become one of the offices/agencies of the Local Government. To fulfill this dream, someone in Congress or the Senate should respond to the challenge, and take the initiative to promote a Bill for the issuance of the Law of the Republic. From now on, while we await the fulfillment of the dream, the Sanggunian and the Local Government Chief Executives, with the endorsement of the DILG Director, can respond to the challenge of presenting a Resolution and creating an Ordinance to make Values. Training / Organic Chaplaincy.

7 signs that the spirit may be communicating with you

I am always amazed when someone in spirit gives information that I could not possibly know. If I wasn’t having the experience, it would be hard for me to believe.

Your loved ones are often close. They want to protect, guide, teach and heal your pain.

The more aware you are of the spirit world, the easier it will be for you to receive guidance from your spirit guides.

Who are your spirit guides?

Your spirit guides could be a deceased grandparent, parent, sibling, soul mate, or best friend. You often have more than one spirit guide because they are there to support you in various areas of your life.

Here are 7 signs that the spirit may be trying to communicate with you:

#1 The message is in the music. Have you ever heard a song on the radio and felt like it was speaking to you? Did you notice how the words stood out? You got excited?

#2 It’s freezing cold in here. If you feel very cold, chilly, or get goosebumps in a room that doesn’t have to be cold, there may be spiritual activity in that room. The spirit vibrates at a higher frequency.

#3 You visit in your dreams. Have you dreamed of one of your deceased loved ones and felt like it was very real? It is easier for spirit to connect with you while you sleep because your mind is at peace and you are receptive.

#4 You feel the presence of a spirit. Just because you can’t see a loved one doesn’t mean they’re not there. If you feel it, you’ll know you’re not making it up.

#5 You hear your own voice inside your head. When a deceased loved one talks to you, it usually sounds like your own voice, yet it has a different feeling. You will know because it is different from what you would think or say.

#6 Touched by an angel. Have you ever felt someone touch the top of your head, the tip of your nose, or tickle your arm, but see nothing?

#7 Electrical disturbances. Spirit loves to communicate through light bulbs, telephones, televisions, and computers. Have you ever seen the lights go on and off? Or did she hear a lot of static on the phone line? See if he can begin to tell the difference between an electrical problem and when the spirit is trying to make its presence known to him.

The other side.

Becoming aware of the spirit world takes time. It’s like turning off the light in a room and not being able to see in the dark. As time passes, your eyes adjust to the dark. You start to see things you couldn’t see before. This is how the realm of the spirit operates. You will see.

Quinoa – A Healthy and Versatile Vegetable Protein

You may or may not be familiar with quinoa (pronounced here). It is relatively new to most people, but it has been cultivated in South America for over 5,000 years. The ancient Incas considered it sacred, referring to it as the “mother grain”.

So why should you eat quinoa?

Quinoa is used as a grain, but is actually a seed of a leafy green plant distantly related to spinach.

It is a complete protein, which means it contains all the essential amino acids, which is unusual for a plant. Amino acids are the building blocks of muscle and are necessary for proper growth, maintenance, and repair of the body. This makes quinoa ideal for vegans and vegetarians who may find it difficult to get adequate protein.

It is extremely versatile and can be used in salads, stews, soups, and stir-fries. It’s also great as a hot breakfast cereal. It’s much lighter than grains and starchy foods, so you won’t feel sluggish or overly full after eating it. Qualities that have made her popular with athletes and celebrities.

Varieties

The most popular and readily available quinoa is the yellowish/white variety, but there are quite a few varieties on the market, including red, orange, black, and purple. I’ve tried red quinoa, which is naturally firmer than yellow/white, it’s nice once in a while, but I personally prefer the more common yellow/white variety.

Vitamin and mineral content

In addition to quinoa’s excellent protein content, it also contains:

– magnesium

– B1 (Thiamine)

– B2 (Riboflavin)

– B6 (pyridoxine)

– Zinc

-Match

Taste and texture

Quinoa has a protective outer layer of bitter-tasting saponins that must be removed before eating. Traditionally this was done by rinsing and soaking for a few hours and then repeating. Fortunately, most commercially available quinoa has already been rinsed, removing the saponins. I still rinse the seeds in a fine mesh strainer and then let them drain for a minute before cooking.

The texture of the quinoa is determined by how long you cook it. It cooks in much the same way as you would rice, using twice as much water as grain, ie 1 cup of quinoa to 2 cups of water. Allowing it to cook for 10 minutes and then turning off the heat and reserving to absorb the excess liquid will give it a soft and fluffy texture. Or if you want a firmer texture with more nuts, remove from heat after ten minutes and rinse under cold water for a second or two, to prevent further cooking.

Here’s a tip to speed up cooking time

I recently started soaking quinoa in a bowl overnight, and then rinsed and drained it before cooking. Soaking overnight really speeds up the cooking time, about 6 minutes!

A basic quinoa recipe

There are endless recipes for quinoa, but I like this basic one the best.

Will need:

– 1 cup of quinoa

– 2 cups of boiling water (reduce the water if the quinoa was soaked overnight)

– 1/2 onion

– 1/2 red pepper

– 1/2 cube of organic vegetable broth

– freshly ground black pepper to taste

– coconut oil

1. Bring water to a boil and add the bouillon cube.

2. Heat a small amount of coconut oil in a saucepan or pot over medium heat.

3. Chop the onions and red bell pepper in a small food processor or by hand if you don’t have a small food processor. Add to the saucepan and sauté while rinsing the quinoa.

4. Turn up the heat and add the quinoa and boiling water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium again. If you have previously soaked the quinoa cook for about 6 minutes, having used less water it should be absorbed in this time, otherwise cook for 10 minutes.

5. When the water is almost completely absorbed, remove from heat and add ground black pepper, mix, then allow to absorb any remaining liquid.

This recipe is great as a substitute for rice, pasta, or potatoes in any dish. It also keeps pretty well in the fridge, but it’s best to use within a day or two or cook.

So I hope you enjoyed this article and decide to give quinoa a try. I have many more articles on my free health and fitness site (link is below), including the many health benefits of coconut oil. Feel free to check it out.

Sound quality

A mono headset is designed for one ear, as it will not provide sound to both ears. The sound quality of these devices is acceptable and they are ideal for making calls and performing other main functions.

Stereo headphones, on the other hand, are much better if you want to listen to your favorite music.

Emissions Test – Top 10 Tips to Pass the Emissions Test

Many states and counties require that your vehicle pass an emissions test every two years. Your car, truck or van cannot be driven or sold without a clean bill of health. Here are ten top tips to make sure your vehicle passes inspection.

1. If the “check engine” light is on, it will fail the emissions test.
If it appeared recently, perhaps the problem is something short-term and will go away after several car trips. But if not, you’ll have to take care of whatever is causing the problem (see below).

2. Have an oil change if you haven’t done so in the last few months.
Gasoline can sometimes contaminate the oil in the crankcase, which increases carbon monoxide emissions.

3. Change the air filter while you are at it.
A dirty air filter can also increase carbon monoxide emissions and may fail an emissions test.

4. Fit new spark plugs, with proper gap.

5. Check the gas cap to make sure there are no cracks and that it fits and seals tightly.
If there is something wrong with it, please get a new one. Make sure the gas cap is securely closed with three clicks before testing.

6. Fill the tank with premium gasoline.
You don’t want unburned gasoline anywhere but in the gas tank. Higher octane gas will burn better. You can go back to the “cheap stuff” after inspection.

7. Add some “dry gas” or other gas additive to your tank.
When you drive the car to warm it up for testing, the additive should help clean the catalytic converter and exhaust system.

Note: Be sure to read the correct additive labels and follow the instructions.

8. Make sure your tires are at full air pressure.
Emissions testing may include putting your car on the dyno. The tester will check emissions while driving your car on a rotating cylinder at various speeds. Properly filled tires will help maintain more consistent performance and reduce the risk of failure.

9. Arrive at the inspection site with a half tank or less of gasoline.
This can also help prevent gas from getting into places you don’t want during your emissions inspection. You may want to keep this point in mind when “speeding up” according to tip number six.

10. Drive the car for about half an hour before the test and keep the engine idling while you wait in line.
The idea is to have the engine warm and running at maximum fuel efficiency. This will also help mix your additive and get it into the fuel system.

If your “check engine” light stays on, or if following these tips doesn’t help you pass your emissions inspection, there are still a couple of things you can do.

A portable diagnostic scanner can easily turn off the check engine light. Even if the light is off, your vehicle’s computer may still contain diagnostic trouble codes. A decent scanner will also be able to reset these codes.

However, your vehicle may activate those same codes on the way to the inspection site. Even if you don’t turn on your check engine light, you’ll still fail the emissions test when they connect their scanner to your car’s computer. Your scanner can detect and read trouble codes whether or not the check engine light is on.

The scan tool can tell you where to look for engine performance and emissions issues. With it you can check the oxygen sensors of your car’s engine and many other parameters to find the system and subsystem where the problem is. Fix the problem and you’ll be sure to clear the emissions test.

Capiz, Philippines, Asia cut foliage and cut flowers

Background

Following the collapse of the shrimp industry in the mid-1980s, an interesting industry slowly emerged in the early 1990s as dynamic and aggressive women entrepreneurs turned their expensive hobby into a profitable and enjoyable multi-million dollar “lonely” industry. This paved the way for the birth of the Flower Industry in the Province of Capiz. From a little-known industry, it grew to become one of the rapidly expanding agro-industrial sectors in the province, which currently involves more than 5,000 stakeholders, florists, landscapers, contractors, technologists, input suppliers, agricultural technicians, and gardeners.

Capiz is a major producer of potted and cut orchids, garden materials, fresh foliage and potted ornamentals throughout Visayas. It is also recognized as one of the sources of the best and rarest ferns in the country today. Today, it is slowly building a name as the country’s leading source of exportable cut foliage.

Roxas City leads the number of growers in the province with ten (10) commercial farms located here. It is also considered as the commercialization center with the presence of 4 points of sale such as Paseo de Catedral, Balay Kapisnon, Trade Center Teodoro Arcenas and Talon Garden Center. It is followed by the municipalities of Sigma, Dao, Panay and Ivisan. As of December 2005, it is estimated that the total area dedicated to floriculture exceeds one hundred hectares.

Behind the strength of the industry is the Cooperativa de Propósitos Múltiples de Capiz (CMPC), which serves as the main coordinating body for cut flower and ornamental plant producers throughout the province. It works closely with National Government Agencies (NGAs), Local Government Units (LGUs) and industry associations to provide a conducive business climate for the industry to develop and grow. All the major producers in the province are members of the Capiz MPC. It is an organization duly registered with the Cooperative Development Authority and the Department of Trade and Industry.

The local ornamental industry group is made up of the core industries, supply industries, and other industries that provide related and other services. The group is made up of interrelated and interdependent supporting industries and institutions.

Vision

A unified, self-sufficient, environmentally friendly and globally competitive floriculture industry to improve the quality of life of its members and the community and to be known as the “Cut Foliage Capital of the Philippines”

Service and input providers: this category includes the following:

Landscapers: Those who provide landscaping services to homes, public and commercial buildings, subdivisions, memorial parks, others. There are about 9 known professional landscapers in the province at present.

Floral Artists – Those who provide flower arranging services for occasions such as weddings, funerals, debut, graduation, product launch, grand openings, etc. Most of the floral artists are concentrated in the Cathedral Walk located near the Roxas City Metropolitan Cathedral, as they are also cut flower dealers.

Cut flower/ornamental plant dealers – are those who are solely engaged in the sale of cut flowers and ornamental plants. Either they sell at a permanent stall/place (such as Balay Kapisnon, Paseo de Catedral) or they are street vendors (like most traders during municipal/city market days).

Input suppliers: include those that sell garden supplies and accessories, such as organic fertilizers (Hacienda Olive), terracotta/plastic pots, and substrates for soilless plants.

Industry status and performance

Production

Cut flowers

The province produces only a few varieties of cut flowers on a commercial scale. These are orchids (white dendrobiums), roses and asters (white and lilac). Other low-quality varieties produced on a limited scale include dahlias, lilies, African daisies, variegated ferns, and gladioli (orange). Cut orchids and ferns peaked in production between 1995 and 2000 with 4 commercial farms producing a total output of 1500 dozen per week. The volume of production has slowly decreased in the last 5 years as more and more flowers from outside the province flooded the local market. Currently, only 1 farm grows orchids.

Fresh Foliage and Live Plants

Foliage plants comprise 80% of the ornamental plant industry in Capiz and has become an important source of livelihood for many families. Most foliage plants are grown in commercial farms and backyard gardens in Sigma, Dao, Panay, Ivisan, and Roxas City.

Foliage plants are sold as cut, potted, or live plants. Potted plants serve as houseplants and landscaping, while cut foliage is for flower arrangements.

The demand for foliage plants is increasing. During the last 10 years, foliage plants, whether cut or live, have the largest share of the export market. At present, Capiz is the only province that exports cut sheets to Japan in all of Luzon and Visayas.

Fresh cut flowers will dominate the province’s imports of ornamental plant products. These imported flowers are those that are not produced locally due to climatic conditions, such as chrysanthemums, lilies, roses, anthuriums, striae, gerberas, carnations, and some varieties of gladioli. Coming closer, there will be other live plants, cuttings and cuttings that will also be used as planting materials or mother plants. Far in third place are orchid seedlings. Flowers have seasonal demands.

3. Allow yourself to feel nice and relaxed, almost to the point of taking a nap.

4. Imagine that you are one of a warm Caribbean beach

5. Explore that image in your mind for a while.

6. Once you have your image memorized, open your eyes

Now, what exactly did you see in your mental image of a warm Caribbean beach?

Did your image include coconut trees? Have you smelled the coconut oil?

I bet you did because this is what most people think of when they think of a Caribbean beach. Powdery white sand, blue-green water that sparkles in the sunlight, and those iconic coconut palms that line the beaches.

Coconut palm trees are so much a part of everyone’s vision of a Caribbean landscape that they assume they were always there.

But guess that?!

They are actually NOT native to the Caribbean and have been there less than 500 years!

They were introduced to the Caribbean region by the Spanish and other European colonizers during the first half of the 16th century. However, Christopher Columbus and his men never saw a coconut on any of his 4 voyages to the New World. These took place between 1492 and 1504. The coconuts just weren’t there when they got there. They came later.

I know this may sound a bit surprising. You might be saying something along the lines of, “But… I thought coconuts could withstand erosion by seawater and were buoyant enough to float thousands of miles. Right? Isn’t that how they got to the Caribbean and all over the world?” the world??They floated there from somewhere else, right?

Well I know this is what a lot of people believe. In fact, this is what some historians believed. However, the evidence shows this to be wrong, and it does so very definitively.

None of the earliest recorded records of the Spanish, and the records of other European colonizing nations that were exploring the Caribbean in the late 1400s and early 1500s, mention a coconut. Also, there was no Taino word or Carib word for coconut – these were the natives of the Caribbean islands and if anyone knew if they were there they would have known. There is no native word for coconut because coconuts did not exist before the Spanish brought them there. Most linguists believe that the word coconut comes from the Spanish word “mono” because they thought that the coconut resembled the face of a monkey with two eyes and an open mouth.

Now, the Spanish DID discover coconuts on the WEST coast of Central America. For a long time, history books and other historical accounts erroneously said that coconuts had spread from the west coast of Central America to the Caribbean. However, the genetic evidence shows very convincingly that this is absolutely wrong.

It turns out that when you do DNA analysis on coconuts from around the world, they fall into 2 distinct and separate genetic groups. They are all one species, but the 2 groups are genetically different enough that they are easily separated.

One group of coconuts originated from the Pacific region of Indonesia. The other group of coconuts originated near India in the Indian Ocean. The only place where the two groups appear to have mixed is in Madagascar. It has been very convincingly proven that the coconuts found on the WEST side of Central America are in the Indonesian Pacific group and the coconuts found in the Caribbean are in the Indian group. Therefore, Caribbean coconuts did NOT originate on the west coast of Central America.

If you play historical detective, it seems that coconuts from India were first carried by people or by currents to the east coast of Africa. Then much later, in the 1500’s, they were moved by people to the west coast of Africa and shortly after this occurred, they were brought to the new world by the colonizers and/or missionaries of the day.

As an interesting side note, I’d like to mention that Coconuts are believed to have been brought to the west coast of Central America by Polynesians over 1000 years before Columbus “discovered” the New World. Now, that’s something to ponder! Never take something written in a history textbook as the gospel. It is almost certain by now that Columbus was NOT the first non-native to “discover” America.

Ok, back to the story of the Caribbean coconut:

Once the Europeans “discovered” the coconut, they quickly realized that this would be a very simple way of transporting sterile water (coconut water) and nutrients aboard ships that embarked on long voyages through salt water where fresh water was scarce and often polluted. .

Coconuts have been planted in the Caribbean since at least the mid 1500s, as there are written records of this. Sometimes they were planted on the margins of the sugar mills to provide food and water to those who worked on the mills. It wasn’t until a few centuries later that coconuts were grown commercially on a large scale as a cash crop.

Now, I know this may sound off topic, but give me a moment because I need to tell you about the shipwrecks before I continue with the story of the Caribbean coconuts:

There were many shipwrecks in the 1500s, including the very famous incident in which an entire fleet of gold-laden Spanish ships sank trying to pass through the Mona Passage between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico during a terrible hurricane. In fact, Mona Passage is famous for shipwrecks, as the sea conditions were difficult to navigate, even in the best weather conditions. In fact, Mona’s Passage can be difficult to navigate even today with modern technology. Many men have lost their lives in this area as many ships have been wrecked there.

So why am I talking about shipwrecks when I should be talking about coconuts?

Well, it turns out that the coconuts spread throughout the Caribbean very quickly because of the moving ships, which is to say, the ships were moving them much faster than the currents could have. In fact, when there were shipwrecks, there could be many thousands of coconuts thrown overboard in a new coconut spot. As these coconuts came ashore, some of them surely took root naturally. However, it turned out that it was quite common for people in the Caribbean region to intentionally take the coconut bounty that the sea gave them and plant them. In this way, most of the coconuts would survive to produce another coconut plant. In fact, this is exactly what happened in West Palm Beach Florida and how it got its name. A ship wrecked on the high seas sending a few thousand coconuts that the people of the area planted when they came ashore.

The most popular vacation destination in the Dominican Republic is now on the east coast and is called Punta Cana. In fact, not just the original small community of Punta Cana, but the entire 39 miles of the east coast are commonly known as Punta Cana or the Punta Cana Coast. However, early investors in the area called it “La Costa del Coco”. This was due to the very lush and very mature coconut palm forest that lines the coast in this region and actually extended quite a bit inland. You will still sometimes see the phrase “La Costa del Coco” used.

I don’t have definitive proof, but I can’t help but think that those coconut trees that line the Punta Cana coast and that vacationers enjoy so much may be the descendants of coconuts lost during a shipwreck long ago. The coconut palm grove could even be from an old shipwreck as early as the 16th century. In a way, you may be looking at a historical marker of a shipwreck when you gaze at those coconut trees!

The next time you are in the Dominican Republic or anywhere else in the Caribbean and see a coconut palm tree, remember that you are NOT looking at a native Caribbean plant. Try to close your eyes and imagine what the Caribbean landscape would be like without the coconut plants. It’s harder to do than you think! We are so conditioned to think of coconuts as one with the Caribbean. Perhaps it is a good lesson to always keep questioning things, no matter how sure we are that they are true.
