WDW History 101 – “How to Buy 27,000 Acres of Land and No One Notices”

Thinking of walking from the Magic Kingdom to Epcot? Think again!

People, especially those who haven’t been to Walt Disney World in many years, always tell me how huge WDW really is. In reality, most people don’t realize how much land WDW actually covers. In fact, it’s about 80 times the size of the entire nation of Monaco, twice the size of Manhattan, and the same size as San Francisco, California! So when you say WDW is huge, you’re not kidding!

The Walt Disney World Resort is made up of 47 square miles of land…or about 30,000 acres. Only about 1100 acres of that land is dedicated to the 4 theme parks. In fact, with only 7,100 developed acres, there is plenty of room for expansion!

But how (and why) did Disney buy all that land?

In the early 1950s, Anaheim, the home of Disneyland, was a sleepy little town, surrounded by nothing but acres and acres of orange groves. Originally, Walt Disney wanted his new 8-acre theme park to be built near his Burbank studios, but he soon realized that such a small space would not be enough. So, he purchased more than 160 acres of orange and walnut groves in Anaheim, near the Santa Ana freeway interchange and Harbor Boulevard, and built his “Magic Kingdom” within its borders (while moving 15 existing homes in the process). Today, Disneyland encompasses less than 300 acres, which includes Disney’s California Adventure and additional hotel properties. Relatively speaking, all of Disneyland could fit inside Epcot.

Unfortunately, Walt Disney didn’t buy enough land around Disneyland, and soon after the park opened it was surrounded by tawdry hotels, tourist gift shops, and restaurants. His dream of a fully contained theme park for families was now tainted with views of billboards and fast food restaurants. Walt promised that if he ever built another theme park, he wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. He would be sure that they could control the surroundings, which would include camps and first-class facilities for recreation and lodging.

In the early 1960s, Walt and a team of Imagineers, including his brother Roy and General Joe Potter (can you find his name anywhere in Walt Disney World?) embarked on a top-secret effort, known simply as “Project X” (later known as “Project Florida”) to tour the nation in search of a new location for a second theme park. First of all, they were looking for a lot of land…cheap! Second, they wanted it to be close to a major city, with good weather and excellent roads and infrastructure. Reportedly, when Walt’s plane crossed the intersection of I-4 and Route 192 in Florida, he knew that he had found his location.

But how is Walt Disney going to buy thousands of acres of land without landlords holding out for exorbitant prices? the not Something like. Walt Disney created dozens of “shell” corporations, with names like “MT Lott” (get it? Empty lot?), the “Latin American Development and Managers Corporation” and the “Reedy Creek Ranch Corporation” to buy up apparently worthless. of land ranging from swamps to cattle pastures. By May 1965, significant land purchases had been recorded in Osceola and Orange counties (just southwest of Orlando), although no one realized (or suspected at first) that Disney had anything to do with it. One of the first purchases included 8,500 acres owned by Florida State Senator Irlo Bronson.

In late June of that same year, the Orlando Sentinel reported in an article that more than 27,000 acres had recently changed hands. Speculation began that big corporations like Ford, McDonnell-Douglas, Hughes Aircraft, and Boeing (since the Kennedy Space Center was located nearby), like, yes, even Walt Disney. However, in October, Orlando Sentinel reporter Emily Bavar, confirming her suspicions after several negative responses from Disney employees, broke the story that it was Walt Disney who had secretly been behind the purchases of all these lands. . Of course, once it was revealed that Disney was behind the purchases, land prices went up over 1000%! That is part of the reason why Walt bought his first acre of land in Florida for Walt Disney World for $80.00 and his last for $80,000.00!

Disney quickly scheduled a press conference and confirmed the story. With the Governor of the State of Florida and his brother Roy by his side, Walt described the $1 billion project that would become Walt Disney World. In exchange for providing such a boost to the area’s economy, the creation of thousands of jobs, and improvements to Central Florida’s environment and infrastructure, Disney received permission to establish its own charter government, known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. This quasi-government gave Disney the ability to create its own building codes, do its own zoning and road and bridge planning, and create its own residential community, among other advantages.

When Walt Disney purchased the 47 square miles that would become the Walt Disney World Resort as we know it today, it was nothing more than desolate swamp, scrub forest, and groves. To transform this area into the number one vacation destination in the world, large amounts of Earth had to be moved. Also, since much of central Florida is essentially “floating” on a body of water, an overwhelming challenge presented itself. Disney had to transform this land, while balancing the needs of the environment and the ecology of the area. If any part of the water supply were damaged or removed, it would have caused a massive ecological imbalance in the region.

The first thing Disney did was set aside a 7,500-acre Conservation Area in 1970, which would never be built on. This would preserve the cypress trees and provide land for the natural inhabitants of the area. Second, they developed an engineering marvel by creating a system of more than 55 miles of canals and levees to control water levels. Disney Imagineer John Hench designed this network of canals to blend in with the natural landscape, rather than being built in straight lines. The mechanism that controls the water levels is fully automated and does not require monitoring and requires little maintenance. Quite impressive, considering the property is about twice the size of Manhattan!

Currently, the two municipalities of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista are home to Walt Disney World. These two towns are run by Disney employees who live on the property in a small group of “backstage” houses. Although the permanent residential population of these cities is very small (population 20 in 2003), it is home to millions of families who, for a brief period, call Bay Lake “home”.

Over the years, Disney purchased an additional 3,000 acres, bringing the total size of Walt Disney World Resort to more than 30,000 acres. Less than a year after the formal public announcement that it was, in fact, the Disney Company that had purchased all that land near the intersections of major highways US 192 and Interstate 4, he declared, “Here in Florida, we have something special. I never enjoyed at Disneyland… the blessing of size. There’s enough land here to accommodate every idea and plan we can imagine.” With only about 1/4 of the entire property developed, it seems he was right.

Type 2 Diabetes: Keep Your Blood Sugar Steady With These Thai Food Classics

Thai food is one of the fastest growing cuisines in the West. And with dishes tastier and richer than most other countries can offer, it’s no wonder more and more type 2 diabetics are turning to Thai food for healthy eating without the need to choke on bland salads and sandwiches.

However, not all Thai dishes on the menu at your local Thai restaurant are suitable for diabetics. A meal of papaya salad, fried noodles, and sweetened sticky rice will likely raise your blood sugar more than a kite. Lucky for you, there are some delicious Thai dishes that are great for keeping diabetics’ blood sugar in check.

Spicy shrimp soup: Spicy Shrimp Soup (also known as “tom yom goong”) contains fresh shrimp, Thai spices, and coconut milk. Although not as healthy as salmon, shrimp are rich in omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fats fight the inflammation that underlies insulin resistance. Research published in 2009 “FASEB Magazine” found that omega-3 supplementation from shellfish reduced insulin resistance stemming from obesity.

Coconut Curry: Coconut curry, like panang curry, is packed with foods like vegetables and lean meats, which should form the foundation of your diabetic diet. Coconut oil is rich in a unique type of fat known as medium chain triglycerides. An article in February 2009 “Review of Diabetes Metabolism Research“concluded that foods rich in medium-chain triglycerides help diabetics control blood sugar.

morning glory: Sautéed morning glory is the perfect Thai side dish. Morning Glory is a green vegetable that can help you lose weight. Studies show that diabetics who gorge on vegetables tend to weigh less than those who avoid vegetables.

Grilled chicken: Many Thai restaurants offer grilled or baked chicken. Once you remove the skin, this dish becomes pretty low in saturated fat and calories. Research suggests that increasing your protein intake from healthy sources like grilled chicken can keep your appetite at bay and may even boost your metabolism.

Steamed vegetables: There is nothing healthier than steamed vegetables like broccoli, tomatoes, onions, and carrots. Nevertheless, Thais would not accept a bland dish like steamed vegetables on their own. By adding a pinch of salt and a generous amount of coconut milk, a diet classic goes from boring to delicious.

Fresh fruit: Thailand offers fruits like pineapple, dragon fruit, and mango that are not only tasty but packed with important vitamins and minerals. Ask your local Thai restaurants to prepare a fruit plate consisting of traditional Thai fruits for your dessert. Be sure to limit your fruit intake, as certain Thai fruits like mango and pineapple are high in sugar.

Famous explorers mentioned in popular songs

Immigration remains one of the hot political issues of the year, despite the irony of the country’s founding. The very men who forged our Constitution were immigrants, as we are all different from the Native Americans who inhabited the earth before the explorers came.

The most famous of the immigrants is, of course, Christopher Columbus, an Italian who stumbled upon the New World while sailing under the command of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. He has gained such renown that he has numerous cities named after him, as well as his own holiday.

Colón has also been mentioned in dozens of songs, including Bob Dylan’s 115 sleep and Loudon Wainwright Kings and Queens. British new wave artist Graham Parker, a contemporary of Elvis Costello and The Police, even named an entire album after the explorer, called Goodbye Columbus.

Here are ten other famous explorers who have been referenced in popular songs by well-known artists.

ponce de leon by Hall and Oates

This Spanish Voyager appears in boredom in the mountains from the duo’s debut album.

Cortes the killer by Neil Young

The man who conquered the Aztecs is the subject of this song by Zumaa very underrated record from the early seventies.

Doctor Livingstone I guess by Moody Blues

This European, famous for teaming up with Henry Clark to survey Africa, is the subject of a song by the British band In search of the lost chord.

Swing Lo Magallanes by dirty projectors

The first man to sail around the world provides the title character on a track on the alternative group’s 2012 self-titled album.

francis drake by Sammy Hagar

Why is the law an ass?

Do you know that there is a saying called “the Law is an ass”? It is derived from an English proverb that compares the stubbornness and stupidity of the law to the supposed innate nature of a donkey. Charles Dickens popularized it in his novel “Oliver Twist” where Mr. Bumble is told in court regarding his domineering wife that “…his wife is supposed by law to act at his direction” , reply:
“If the law supposes that,” said Mr. Bumble, clutching his hat emphatically with both hands, “the law is an ass, an idiot.”

In my opinion, the law becomes an ass because judges, lawyers, and the legal profession do not follow the spirit of the law. They only care about the letter of the law.

Our politicians are very good at making new laws all the time because it gives them the appearance of acting in a positive way and trying to solve a problem. In doing so, they disregard the fact that when lawyers and judges apply the law, only the letter of the law is followed and never the spirit. It leads to contradiction in many cases where all ethical and moral considerations are lost. Thus the law becomes an ass.

We see this in action in every bureaucratic institution everywhere and at every level of government. It means that those who work in that situation cannot use their common sense or reason with their brains. These people are being conditioned to think in a particular way and trained to stick to the letter of the law. Do you realize that when you’re working in these conditions unless you’re aware of it, you unknowingly become a zombie?

In the recent case of Isreal Folau and Rugby Australia, a moral and ethical dilemma has arisen as both parties have called for its correction according to the letter of the law.

Israel Folau claims that he has been discriminated against and unfairly dismissed by Rugby Australia due to his religious beliefs.

As Rugby Australia is a bureaucratic organization that can only think in terms of the letter of the law, they had to find Folau in breach of contract to fire him. There was no other option because they followed the letter of the law.

To implement the law, Rugby Australia did what most bureaucratic organizations do: flaunt their authority and use intimidation tactics. They warned Folau and threatened to dismiss him so that he would give in to their demands. Under those circumstances, how would you feel if you were in Folau’s place? Won’t you dig in your heels

Thus we have an example where the letter of the law is applied, without any ethical and moral consideration to an individual who had not committed any crime, to submit him to its demands.

Recently, in the Brisbane Courier-Mail on May 7, 2019, a report was published titled “Music legend felt ‘raped'”. Diana Ross “was on the verge of tears when a security officer touched her between the legs during an airport search.” “They treated me like s..t.” “It makes me want to cry.” “It’s not what was done, but how,” she insisted. “However, a TSA spokesperson said CCTV footage appeared to show that all protocols were ‘correctly’ followed by the officers involved.”

Here again, it was an example of how bureaucratic handling of a situation can result in traumatizing an individual. And, of course, the bureaucracy always gets away with it because it always acts within the letter of the law. Under the protection of the law, an average person unconsciously or consciously tends to feel more powerful and superior; therefore, there is the potential for authority to be abused.

Therefore, when we apply a law without the spirit behind its formulation, it becomes a heart without a soul. I hope this case between Folau and Rugby Australia is not settled out of court. I want the wise judges of our Courts of Justice to show us all that the law is not an ass.

Home Kitchen

Numerous Benefits of Using LED Kitchen Cabinet Lighting

Homes are not just living rooms and bedrooms, the heart of the home is the kitchen. Instrumental in the preparation of sumptuous dishes, kitchens must be vibrant, safe and bright. Dim, muted lighting looks good everywhere else, but it’s definitely not the best choice for a kitchen that’s intended to be used.

Modern lighting option.

LED, (acronym for Light Emitting Diode) has become one of the preferred means of lighting worldwide. Sleek and compact, the LED combines the best of attractive designs and the right amount of overall brightness. LED kitchen cabinet lights are available in various designs including LED strips and LED tape lights, LED panels, LED triangles and wedges, LED plinth lights, stylish LED light bars, LED puck lights, and LED rotating bars and many more. It is important to have directional lighting in kitchens if possible, to avoid accidents. Kitchens that are not well lit are prone to accidents, due to the availability of hot cooking surfaces, sharp objects, liquids, etc., and a well-lit workspace is essential.

Maximum quality in lighting.

LED cabinet lights offer the highest quality compared to traditional fixtures with halogen or fluorescent bulbs. LED cabinet lights cast a constant light to the surface below. One of the biggest advantages of LED lights is the fact that LED lights do not cast harsh shadows. Bright light helps you see clearly when shopping or reading recipes that may have been scribbled on a piece of paper or available in a worn book. LED lights do not produce heat with light (which is why they save you so much money). Kitchens are small stoves and turning up the heat would only make things worse.

High durability with longer lifespan.

LED bulbs have legendary longevity and last much longer than traditional light bulbs. Some LED bulbs are expected to offer a lifespan of around 50,000 working hours, which is staggering as it pales in performance to incandescent bulbs that can’t compete by comparison. The high durability of LED bulbs offers economy and saves you precious time on maintenance.

Contemporary and elegant styles.

Kitchens are ideally dream kitchens, and a lot of effort goes into designing kitchens and equipping them. It is important to choose the right lighting not only to beautify the kitchen but also to improve the atmosphere. A well-placed light can not only enhance the brightness in the kitchen, but also elevate the overall curb appeal and appearance of the kitchen. Chests swelling with pride when visitors see dazzling kitchen décor is not vanity; it’s justifiable praise for the design efforts. LED is an extremely efficient lighting solution, consuming far less energy, requiring far less maintenance, and available in sleek, eye-catching designs to enhance appearance.

Mercedes-Benz, a touch of class

90 years ago, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler founded the “Mercedes-Benz” brand in Stuttgart, Germany. After World War I, the economy was so affected that the idea of merging and building a partnership was seen as overcoming climatic obstacles. DMG and Benz & Cie., the world’s two largest car manufacturers at the time, successfully merged in May 1924 and in 1926 “Mercedes-Benz” was born.

The three-star Mercedes logo represents the company’s dominance over land, sea and air. According to the company, it represents the automaker’s drive towards universal motoring with its engines dominating land, sea and air. The emblem is a symbol of world domination.

Cars that made history

The engines of Mercedes cars are of supreme quality. These premium engines evolved with the evolution of different cars in each era since their first production. The Model K was the first car produced, after the two companies merged.

It was incredibly successful and the production of Mercedes-Benz cars increased to 7,000 in 1927. Then came the S-series with a variety of cars until 1929. In the 30’s the biggest and most prestigious car ‘Mercedes-Benz W15’ made its debut, which helped them become one of the leading brands in the automotive industry.

The 260 D model was the world’s first diesel passenger car. In the 1940s, the company stopped vehicle production due to World War II, then resumed operations in 1946 with the 170 V. During the 1950s, it topped the sales charts in Germany, introducing some of its its most attractive cars, such as the 190 and 300SL.

The 1960s was the decade of the muscle car. In 1967, they introduced the Mercedes AMG as a separate high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The first car introduced by the division was the famous 300SEL 6.3 V8 Saloon, which was given the name ‘Red Sow’.

During the 70’s, they produced some successful cars like the SL and SLC 107 series of cars, the G-Class and S-Class series, which are still in production. In the 1980s, it became the first car manufacturing brand to be concerned about environmental pollution. They introduced the closed-loop three-way catalytic converter to reduce overall car pollution.

In 1987, Mercedes-Benz introduced the 100 D 631 series and a year later the W201 Series 2 made its debut, which was a compact executive car with a sports sedan body style. In the 1990s, the company introduced the G-Class Wagons and SUVs and numerous new models such as the E-Class, C-Class and S-Class series.

The 2000s ushered in a new era in top mechanical loading technology. Numerous innovative designs and engineering concepts, such as the BlueTec system, launched in 2005 and had the ability to reduce CO2 emissions.

Today, Mercedes-Benz, together with its high-performance division AMG, is one of the best and most popular automakers, making luxury cars, trucks, coaches and buses. Additionally, the company offers financial services and auto repair.

Quality and Innovation

Since their first production run, they have succeeded in building quality automobiles and discovering innovative ways to implement technology that became the path for the future generation of automobiles. Some notable works introduced by them are as follows:

  • He developed the first road car with four-wheel brakes.
  • In 1936, the Mercedes-Benz 260D was the first diesel passenger car.
  • They were the first to offer direct fuel injection in the Mercedes-Benz 300SL.
  • In 1951 they were the first to develop the “security cage”.
  • Airbags were first introduced to the European market by them in 1981 with the S-Class model.
  • Mercedes-Benz was the first to introduce pretentious seat belts in the 1981 S-Class.
  • In September 2003, they introduced the world’s first seven-speed automatic transmission.
  • They are the first to develop, test and implement ESP, brake assist and other types of safety equipment in passenger cars.
  • In the 1980s, they developed the world’s first robot car together with Professor Dickmanns’ team.

Mercedes-Benz Arena in sport

Mercedes-Benz is a sports enthusiast brand. In football, Mercedes-Benz sponsors the German national football team. Mercedes-Benz sponsors the Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart and provides the naming rights to its stadium, the Mercedes-Benz Arena. They have been in the races for a long time. In the 1930s they participated in Grand Prix Motor races. For the past few years they have dominated the F1 arena with drivers like Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Identity and cooperation

The Mercedes-Benz logo speaks volumes about the brand, even if the name isn’t there. Now they are moving forward with the invention and implementation of new technologies that we don’t know about yet. They have been a great companion for years. Both of the success and fame did not make them irresponsible. They haven’t made a big deal out of safety innovations, and have even licensed them for use by competitors, in the name of improving car and passenger safety. As a result, crumple zones and anti-lock brakes are now standard on all modern vehicles.

Low Testosterone Levels: An Indicator of Higher Cardiovascular Mortality

Testosterone is predominantly produced by the testicles in men. Women’s ovaries produce small amounts. The adrenal glands also produce small amounts in both sexes. Testosterone plays a key role in sexual functioning. In addition to aiding in sperm production, this steroid hormone also improves libido, increases energy, helps produce red blood cells, and protects against osteoporosis. Testosterone is an androgen and an anabolic steroid.

Blood levels of testosterone vary over a wide range. Testosterone levels gradually begin to decline during the third or early fourth decade of life at a steady rate. As a result, older men have significantly lower levels compared to their younger counterparts. Testosterone levels can also be low due to various diseases. The cutoff number is 250 ng/dL, levels below this are considered low.

What is the connection between testosterone and heart disease?

Low testosterone levels have been associated with an increased risk of developing and dying from cardiovascular disease. In a recent study by Laughlin and associates, men with low levels and in the lowest quartile were 40% more likely to die prematurely, especially from cardiovascular disease. These findings were not affected by age, lipid levels, and other risk factors. The study involved 794 men aged 50 to 91, who were followed for 20 years. The study was published in 2008 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

In 2007, the results of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer in the Norfolk study were published in Circulation. In this study, Khaw and her associates monitored 11,000 patients ages 40 to 79 for their testosterone levels and death. They found that the latter were inversely related: low testosterone levels correlated with a higher rate of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all other causes.

In another study, Shores and colleagues found that low testosterone levels were associated with an increased risk of mortality in male veterans. The male population was over 40 years old and did not have prostate cancer. The study was conducted in Seattle and was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2006.

How does low testosterone cause cardiovascular disease?

The exact mechanism by which low testosterone causes the disease is unclear, but there are several postulated cardiovascular mechanisms. Patients with low testosterone levels tend to have more visceral obesity. Visceral obesity is responsible for the apple-shaped body (compared to the pear-shaped body, in which fat is predominantly deposited in the hips and buttocks). More commonly, this is called a ‘beer belly’ or ‘beer belly’. Visceral fat is packed between internal organs in the peritoneal cavity (abdominal cavity). In contrast, subcutaneous fat is found under the skin and intramuscular fat is found in skeletal muscle. Visceral fat is metabolically more active and synthesizes more heart-damaging fatty acids, triglycerides, and adipokines than non-visceral fat. Low testosterone is also associated with the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes. In a study published in 2007, men with the lowest levels of testosterone were four times more likely to develop diabetes compared to men with the highest levels. These data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were published by Selvin and her group in Diabetes Care. Patients with low testosterone levels have higher levels of insulin and triglycerides, both of which are detrimental to the cardiovascular system.

Should You Take Testosterone To Reduce Heart Disease?

There have been no scientific studies that found testosterone replacement to reduce heart disease. There just hasn’t been a study done. However, English and associates found that in patients with established coronary artery disease, testosterone replacement reduced exercise-induced chest pain. These data were published in the European Heart Journal in 2000.

Summary

Testosterone is a predominantly male hormone produced by the testes and adrenal glands. It is responsible for libido in both sexes and for sperm production in men. It is also associated with increased energy, red blood cell production, and prevention of osteoporosis. Testosterone levels normally decline with age, with older men having much lower levels than their younger counterparts. Low testosterone levels have been linked to a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality, and death from all causes. There is no published research on whether taking testosterone supplements will reduce cardiovascular disease and death.

A quick tip to lose weight in the next 24 hours

This article is based on my personal experience. I used it almost 2 years ago. I can’t promise that it will help you lose 30 pounds in the next 24 hours; however, this article will deliver on the promise made in the article.

Advice:

These kinds of fast weight loss methods only work for short-term results. To achieve long-term weight loss results, consider changing your lifestyle.

If you want to lose weight as if you want to lose weight in the thighs or abdominal fat, there are certain exercises for this purpose. This article is about overall weight loss in 24 hours.

Now, I must show you how to lose 2 pounds in the next 24 hours.

Follow the 3 day diet plan

The 3 day diet plan is a short term but extremely useful plan. Although this article is about weight loss in 24 hours, it would be helpful if you could use this plan thoroughly. On average, the 3 day diet plan uses 1000 calories per day. I know it’s a low calorie plan but to lose weight in 24 hours, we have no choice.

Drink a lot of water

Try to suppress your hunger by drinking more water. Drink at least 12 glasses of water. Your body must not be dehydrated. Losing weight in 24 hours is only possible by losing water weight. You can use water pills. Consult your doctor before using diuretics.

It is also recommended to eat fruits and vegetables. Avoid starchy carbohydrates like potatoes, French fries, and fast food. If you are following a 3 day diet plan then there is no need for these precautions.

steam room

Drink a lot of water. The steam room will help you lose water weight. Consult your doctor before using this procedure. A medical expert must be present to carefully supervise you. Most people get good results from the steam room.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol

Green tea promotes weight loss, but products made with green tea or caffeine are not recommended for 24-hour weight loss. Caffeine stimulates your body to store water, which is not helpful in this case. Try to avoid alcohol for better health. Don’t even think about drinking alcohol in these 24 hours.

Cardiovascular exersise

This is my favorite step. Weight loss is possible by doing cardiovascular exercises. We do not recommend this exercise for more than 30 minutes. However, for one day you can do it for 60 minutes.

Public Speaking – Roasted Humor and Insults

Being roasted is an honor, but you must be careful to honor people while roasting them during a public speaking engagement. Joke about things that are obviously not true and then exaggerate to make them more obvious. However, you can shockingly exaggerate things that are true.

When choosing the target of a story or a dirty joke, choose big targets. Never make fun of a small target (janitor, secretary, etc.). Make fun of the boss. He or she is still the boss after all the teasing and will look like great sport for accepting it.

Members of ‘in’ groups can joke about their peers and insult each other all they want. Bob Hope made fun of Ronald Reagan. Everyone knew they were friends.

If you spread an insult or a collection of insults widely, the group can laugh together. No one is individually ashamed. The same comments directed at an individual away from the cohesive influence of the group can cause someone to become upset.

Always clarify your comments IN ADVANCE! Unless you’re participating in a full roasting program, always make fun of yourself first. If you fool yourself first, the audience will be more receptive when you joke around with them. Here are some roast examples:

To an AT&T executive:

If a Martian called Ed’s office to get in touch with Earth, I’d try to sell them the benefits of our new 800 service.

Keep comments focused on unimportant things that can’t be harmful.

Folks, we’re here tonight for Roast Joe. I’m particularly happy to be here because now I can say in public all the things I’ve been saying behind his back. He is a man/woman of the world. . . And you know what a mess the world is in.

Insult on areas of recognized strength and superiority!

To a great family man and/or community leader:

Joe (neighbors/business associates/preacher, etc.) say that he and his wife make a wonderful couple. . . if it wasn’t for joe.

To a well-known philanthropist:

He is a man of rare gifts. . . he hasn’t given any in years.

In a program with a long head table with many speakers, an emcee might say:

The emcee’s job is not to be wise or clever. In fact, it’s his job to look boring so the show’s speakers will shine in comparison. Tonight it looks like I’m going to have to rise to new heights of boredom.

To the audience, the emcee or speaker might say:

I’m glad to be here tonight to look you in the face. . . . And God knows there are some faces here that need to be examined.

Martial Arts Tips: Fighting Using Pressure Points

Kyusho Jitsu or the art of using pressure points or vital points is the subject of this article. You can guess from the title, huh? There are around 108 pressure points used in martial arts. The points can correspond to the Meridians of Chinese Medicine, Yin/yang, Shichen Times, element theory, or they can be related to the location of blood vessels and nerve channels. Does it matter how you classify the point location as long as the technique works? It could be if you are a stickler for martial arts. If you’re a brawler or a street fighter, it might not matter as much.

There are about eight magic spots on the human body which, if hit correctly, can cause instant death. I am not going to discuss these points for obvious reasons. I don’t want to be responsible for some asshole trying to kill one of his teammates using one of these pressure points.

From what I’ve learned from various sources, pressure points can be divided into two basic categories: rubbing points and impact points. Some points are both. It is also necessary to understand the angle and direction in which the point must be struck in order to be fully effective. It also matters how much penetration is required to activate the point. With some points, just one touch will trigger the point where others require a substantial amount of force to use.

Locating the points is relatively simple. Find where blood vessels or nerve channels cross a bony area or are near the surface and that is where a Kyusho point is likely to be found. Using an acupuncture chart is also helpful in locating points, but is somewhat overwhelming. There are several good books available that show the points. One of the best I have found is The Art of Striking by Marc Tedeschi. There are excellent pictures and diagrams of the dots in this book and several other texts by Mr. Tedeschi. He also does a good job comparing several different arts and their respective techniques. Another excellent reference is The Bubishi, the Bible of Karate by Patrick McCarthy. They should be in his library for points reference only.

Now that you have a pictorial reference and a good description of the points, how do you go about learning them? You can get a list and magic marker along with a willing subject and start drawing dots in strategic places. This is a very difficult way to learn the points and remember them and makes your partner look like they have some kind of pox. I’ve been there, done that. It doesn’t work that well. A better way is to get a list of his techniques, perhaps from his kata, or perhaps jujutsu technique lists if that’s what you’re studying. For self defense like Krav Maga or Haganah you have lists of the techniques used. With the techniques in hand and a willing partner not so covered in stitches, you can proceed to learn the stitches. Select a technique, see where you hit or grab that technique, and find the corresponding pressure points. Use that method to learn as many points as is practical. I discovered that we use practically the same points doing all the techniques that are basic to our system. We use Dan Zan Ryu technique lists, Shotokan karate kata and Haganah lists. Around the 4th kyu and above, techniques are practiced with immense control but at full speed and with resistance. It allows you to find out what works in a fight.

For a basic introduction to techniques, hold on to your partner, or punch or kick as you have been taught and note where those spots are on your partner. Easy on the touch. Getting hit in the nose really takes the edge off. Once you have located half a dozen points, you can begin to memorize their location using the techniques as an indicator. You may need to do some digging to figure out the angle and direction of the hit or pressure, but now you’re off to a good start in getting the points. Note: don’t hit the dots just to see if they work; They can be fatal or disabling. Pressure point practice should be done no more than 15 to 20 minutes per week.

I once had an instructor. I respect him a lot for his achievements and his abilities. But once he mentioned that the pressure point didn’t work. Then he started teaching pressure point punches. With around 600 to 700 pressure points located on, at, or near the skin’s surface, it’s hard not to grab or hit a pressure point. The question is will that point produce an effect if hit or pressed? The trick is to hit specific spots in a dynamic, fast-paced situation, like a fight. Not all pressure points work the same for all people. Some people are more sensitive, others are less sensitive when you hit or grab a pressure point. It is best to have a backup plan and use it. I teach 1-5 punches, throw the opponent to the ground as hard as possible, and then finish with some kind of constriction.

A friend of mine whom we will call Al is a long time judo player. He recently discovered that if he modified the input of his O-soto gari (mountain storm or outside major harvest shot) he could throw his uke with such force that the uke was knocked out on landing. When we started discussing his technique, we discovered that he was, at his and kazushi’s entrance, hitting Stomach 9 and 10. His uke was knocked unconscious before the throw started. Stomachs 9 and 10 are located in the carotid sinus on either side of the neck. It can now be argued that there are several mechanisms that can cause a person to lose consciousness. The first is the meridian theory, where if he hits two points on the same meridian at the same time, he can cause unconsciousness. Another is that below the carotid sinus is a rod receptor that monitors and regulates blood pressure. Touching this point sends a message to the brain that the blood pressure is too high and the heart momentarily stops causing unconsciousness. Another theory is that hitting the carotid sinus forces blood into the brain through the carotid artery. The brain being the sensitive organ that it is, it can’t handle the overpressure and it causes uke to pass out. Now does it matter what the mechanism is as Skippy hits the ground?

Hitting isn’t always a decisive technique, but it’s easier to do than trying to apply a joint lock on an opponent who doesn’t want it. Joint locks are always decisive (locks are for breaking, restraints are for control. Yes, they are interchangeable depending on your intent) when applied correctly. Now, wouldn’t it seem wise to “short-circuit” an opponent with a punch to the side of the nose or below the ear or carotid sinus before applying the joint lock? Even a quick kick to the nose can buy you time to apply some joint locks. It’s best when your opponent can’t resist your attempts to inflict pain and discomfort. Joint locks also use pressure points.

Consider that your opponent is always in your 12:00 o’clock position. As he or she attacks, come in hard at the 11 o’clock position and without hesitation, hit the 9/10 stomach. You’ll have ½ to ¾ of a second to do whatever you want, from continuing to punch, locking a joint, throwing, or a combination of all of the above. It doesn’t matter if it’s an oi-zuki karate or a right cross. Timing is everything and if you hit hard enough, Skippy will be in dreamland.

So how big is a pressure point? In acupuncture they use sharp needles to stimulate and work the points. So the points are not very big. Precision is everything. So if Skippy in a drunken state tries to turn off your lights, can you hit that pencil-tip sized sweet spot to take him to dreamland? Probably not. First off, Skippy’s attack will give you an adrenaline rush and you’ll lose most, if not all, of your fine motor skills. Even if you’ve trained yourself to wait for the adrenaline rush, your skills will be somewhat degraded. Therefore, his techniques must use gross motor skills and would work better if he dealt some mechanical damage to Skippy. It is in those gross motor techniques that you must find the location of the pressure points and train to hit them under pressure. It has an area the size of a quarter (0.25 cent piece) to hit. The presses need to be more precise. How you train is just as important as what you train. The training is specific and under stress you will do exactly what you have trained yourself to do.

Let’s review removing Figure 4 from my system [also known as tekubi shigarami in jujitsu] and count the pressure points used in this simple but effective technique.

Step 1: The attacker delivers a straight right cross or right punch to the face.

Step 2 – Move to the 11 o’clock position and do a sweep lock [ne gashi uke is not really a block but a deflection]. Timing is everything, so if you wait too long, you’ll get hit with your opponent’s other hand. As you do the parry, grab the attacker’s right wrist with your right hand. In fact, slide your hand up the arm as you proceed to grab the wrist and pull the arm to the rear right.

Points used: Heart 6 and Lung 8 on the wrist. By sliding your hand up the attacker’s arm, you are also stimulating the fire and metal meridians of the arm. The fire meridian is on the little finger side of the arm. The metal is on the thumb side of the arm. There are points along these meridians, but we won’t dwell on them too much.

Step 3: While grabbing the attacker’s wrist with your right hand, squeeze tight and use your left hand to palm strike the corner of the attacker’s right eye. Strike in an upward and inward direction at 45 degrees towards the front of the head.

Points used: Triple Heater 23 and Gall Bladder 1. In fact, this is a double hit to the meridian and if done forcefully it will cause unconsciousness. If hit from back to front, the eyeball can pop out of its socket. Be careful during training.

Step 4: Immediately strike the inside of the elbow with the left radial bone. Use this punch to bend the attacker’s arm over his right shoulder. Reach out with your left hand and grab your own right wrist to make a figure 4.

Points used: Lung 5. Hitting this point will cause a cross reflex and prevent the defender from hitting you with his left hand.

Step 5: Swing your left foot in a wide arc toward your right butt. This will create a void that your opponent will fall into. Remember that nature abhors a void and will seek to fill it. Bring nature in with Skippy.

Points Used: As you begin to move, use your right forearm to strike the brachial plexus between the opponent’s biceps and triceps.

Step 6: With the attacker on the ground, keep him on his left side to restrain his left arm from hitting him. Place your left knee along his jawline and your right knee on his floating ribs. Put your elbow directly on your stomach. Press down with your knees and pull back with your hands. Go slow with this in practice because it hurts like hell and could dislocate your partner’s wrist.

Points used: locate them and count them, there are a lot.
When submitting, move into a defensive position.

Using pressure points or Kyusho in a fight is viable but it takes study and practice.

Train hard.
