In the Land of Misfits, Pirates, and Cooks: A Cookbook by Michael Bennett

Local Fort Lauderdale chef / author Michael Bennett has written a Caribbean-style cookbook of his years living on the “Islands.” Chef Bennett is the Executive Chef of Bimini Boatyard in Fort Lauderdale; his first book is titled “In the Land of Pirates, Misfits and Cooks”, a “taste of life” firsthand in the Caribbean.

Bennett has coined the term “Caribbean” as a cross between Caribbean and American food preparation styles. Stimulating the palate and experimenting with new cooking methods and innovative ingredients makes old new again. Chef Bennett takes the reader on fun culinary journeys across the many islands of the Caribbean, showing them that with a little ingenuity you can dazzle your palate by taking tropical inspiration from what Mother Nature has already given us.

The recipes are easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to prepare. This book was designed with simplicity in mind to appeal to the most novice home cooks while intriguing the seasoned cook. Ingredients are readily available at your local grocery store, making this exciting style of cooking accessible anytime without much plan other than having the ingredient list with you while you shop. On most pages there are boxes highlighting cooking tips, prep tips and “insider information” when it comes to healthy eating and variations in dish preparation or at the Bimini Boatyard in Fort Lauderdale.

Restart Windows 8 with Windows 8.1

Windows 8 changes coming

Microsoft made big news last year with the highly anticipated introduction of Windows 8, the software giant’s newest operating system. After months of hype, along with six months of a special launch price, Win8 has received mixed reviews from users since the beginning of the year. Now, in response to criticism, Microsoft is bringing us Windows 8.1, with a preview available in late June 2013, and the full release of the FREE update scheduled for the end of the year.

What’s new in Windows 8.1?

The “Start” button is making a comeback! That’s right, of all the things users said about Windows 8, the loss of the Start button was perhaps the most annoying. In Windows 8.1, Microsoft demonstrates its willingness to listen by bringing back the button at the bottom left of the screen. The Windows logo will appear whenever the cursor is placed in the lower left corner of the screen and will always be visible on the taskbar when in desktop mode.

While it may not seem like much at first glance, the missing Start button was easily the number one complaint received about Win8 … Imagine.

New home screen and tile sizes

Perhaps Windows’ signature change when the new operating system became available last year, the tile-based start screen, designed for touchscreen systems, was the most obvious. While the tiles were an effort to make the new operating system easier to use, traditional users did not welcome them with open arms; those with keyboard and mouse.

With four tile sizes available in Windows 8.1, instead of just two in Win8, the update not only makes the Start screen more attractive, it has also made your apps easier to find and use. Additionally, users can now select multiple apps at once, resize, uninstall, or rearrange them to suit their needs. In other words, the home screen has been made fully customizable in Win8.1; a great improvement over Win8 for desktop users.

Additionally, the tiles can be easily rearranged for your convenience, using the new Press and Hold feature for touchscreens in Win8.1.

With Windows 8.1, the new Start screen is also a smart screen.

What else is new in the Windows 8.1 update?
While it is not possible to describe all the changes to the Windows operating system that will be available with the Win8.1 update that will be released later this year, here are some of the important changes that should be mentioned:

  • New lock screen – The lock screen has been turned into a slideshow, including images collected from your PC, laptop or tablet, as well as SkyDrive and your phone.
  • New screen of all applications -With a simple swipe up of your touch screen device, each application on your device is displayed for reading. You can also pin your most used apps to the home screen with the new press and hold for touch screens.
  • New search results added – No longer a simple type and list function, Windows 8.1 presents users with aggregated search results; bringing together Bing web results, SkyDrive results, your own stored files, and any other information related to your search term. Microsoft calls these results “selected” and the search function really has to be seen to be believed.
  • Customize your home screen – With multiple new backgrounds and wallpapers, as well as motion-sensitive graphics available, you can personalize your home screen like never before.
  • Full SkyDrive integration – According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1 now lives “in the cloud” with improved integration with its online storage application, SkyDrive.
  • Improved multi view function – With so many users multitasking on the screen, Win8.1’s new multi-view enhancement will please many users while Win8 frustrates them.

These are just a few of the many improvements to the operating system that Microsoft has confirmed are available with the upgrade to Windows 8.1. Not only will the update be available for all devices currently running Win8, but Windows RT operating system users, on Surface RT, for example, will also receive the free update; as do Windows Phone users and SkyDrive and Outlook.com users.

While it’s often not popular to compliment the Washington-based software giant, it must be said that Microsoft has responded well to Windows 8 users, using the Windows 8.1 update to clean up and improve the user experience available with the introduction of your latest operating system.

Business

5 sales tracking tips that work

What do you need to know about the follow-up?

Following up with connections, marketing campaigns, networks, or phone calls is more a matter of discipline and time management. Ninety-nine out of a hundred people I know don’t really know how to track. Most of the fault is due to not knowing what to say or thinking that they are begging for the business. You actually go to events and do marketing campaigns to do business and you need to follow up. You can’t wait until someone else does, you can wait forever. Even when you have a marketing campaign on the go, you still need to follow up with the people who have responded. The key here is that you do business with people, not organizations. You must be in contact with the person who will be a conduit in the purchasing process of your organization. It really doesn’t matter at what level you enter a company, what matters is that you enter it.

People in all positions within a company will be able to help you meet the right person for decision making. So don’t think you don’t need to track based on the card title. CEOs may run a company, but others work in it and make the requests for services and products they need to do their jobs more effectively.

Here are some tips that can help you keep track:

o When networking at an event, only collect cards and contact information from the people you want to do business with. Send them an email that evening or early the next morning stating that you would like to schedule a meeting (by phone or face-to-face) to learn more about their business. (Never mention the word sell in this first meeting.)

o When you attend a group of potential clients and receive a referral, ask if you can be introduced for a three-way icebreaker call. This way, you get a great presentation from a third party. Introducing a third party gives you more credibility than introducing yourself. The three-way call is also a way to tell if it is a real clue or just a card that someone took.

o When sending cover letters, be sure to only send a maximum of five per day so it’s easy for you to follow up. Wait a minimum of five, but no more than ten days to follow up. Follow-up can take the form of a phone call if you have indicated so in the letter or it can be an email. I would recommend a phone call to remove all non-prospects from your list. The call can be as simple as “… did you get my letter and insert (a small token of some kind)? I would like to take just 3 minutes of your time to schedule an appointment with you if I think what I have to offer it can work for your business. ” This is a good starting point for organizing meetings.

o When referred by another customer, ask if you can use their name in the conversation. Make sure you can or the referral won’t work the same way, it will be too much for a cold call

The most important part is scheduling your follow-up calls. Put the calls in your phonebook along with the names and numbers of the people you are calling. Force yourself to complete homework every day. Connecting with one or two people each day will give you 365 to 730 people in a calendar year. Surely you can get some business out of so many calls.

Home Kitchen

When black kitchen cabinets can work well

Black kitchen cabinets are a bold option. In fact, they can work in a surprising number of homes, although they may not be to the liking of those who like a more traditional style. The key to making these cabinets work is making sure your kitchen can handle them aesthetically to begin with, and making sure there are no lighting issues.

Lighting considerations

As with painting the walls of a room a dark color, black kitchen cabinets will tend to reduce ambient light somewhat. In the right environment, this is a wonderful effect. It’s also a great reason to consider updating your kitchen lighting to suit this new aesthetic.

Adding track lighting that shines into cabinets is usually a good idea. This helps brighten the interiors and makes it easy to keep track of what’s inside. This also helps to show off the cabinets a bit.

Hardware

The hardware that accompanies black cabinets can make them much more attractive. If you want a host of stainless steel appliances in your kitchen, you may want to consider matching cabinet accessories. This can create a very dramatic effect that will give your kitchen a unique look.

If you have different colored accents in the room, black kitchen cabinets provide a very easy way to emphasize them. Black will match just about any other color, so it’s easy to make sure your cabinets match the overall look of your kitchen. While black kitchen cabinets can be bold, they are also very flexible in how they can be made to work with the other items in the room.

Countertops

Black countertops obviously go well with these cabinets. You can also consider gray or even white, if you want to add a lot of contrast to the room. These cabinets can work just as easily with other colored countertops as they do with other colored accents, so don’t be afraid to consider them if you have patterned or other types of countertops in your home. Black is incredibly versatile.

Other considerations

Black is a great color for a very modern look. For a more conservative look, it may not mix well with the environment. It is also better suited to kitchen color schemes that aren’t too bold. For example, if your entire kitchen scheme is off-white, black may not be as suitable. However, if it is purely white, it could add a great contrast look to the overall look that could make the kitchen more interesting.

This is a fun color option for those who like to do something different and who like to stand out. It is also ideal for trendy, modern and exclusive homes. Those who love minimalism will fall in love with this cabinet color, as will those who love something that says a lot for being understated. Remember to consider the lighting; You can really stand out in these cabinets and make sure the room looks its best.

Ford pride and success story

Ford’s headquarters are in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. This is the place where the former chief engineer of the Edison Illuminating Company, named Henry Ford, founded the “Ford Motor Company” on June 16, 1903 with a capital of $ 28,000 along with twelve other investors. The famous scientist Thomas Alva Edison was a great friend of Henry Ford and encouraged him to pursue his idea and dream of establishing an automobile company that would make simple and affordable cars for Americans.

At first, only two to three workers worked on each car. On July 23, 1903, the company sold its first produced car, Ford Model A, and Dr. Ernst Pfennig, a Chicago dentist, became the first owner. Other automakers made cars for wealthy people, but Ford developed a design and manufacturing method that lowered the price of the Model T, which debuted in 1908 to a price tag of $ 825. In its first year it achieved a record sale of more than 10,000 cars. Four years later, the price dropped to $ 575. In 1914, Ford claimed a 48% share of the automobile market. The car sold like hotcakes. With increased demand, Ford was able to reduce the build time of the Model T from 12.5 hours to less than 6 hours. Ford created history and became the change maker of the automobile market.

World War I became a turning point as it changed the course of automobile history. Henry Ford was able to make a huge profit at that time. Ford Model T cars were used by various armies for military purposes. They not only served as ambulances but also as delivery trucks, personnel carts, and artillery carriers. As soon as the United States joined the war, Ford began producing ambulances, trucks, vans, tanks, and submarine hunters. The Ford factory at Trafford Park in Manchester supplied the British Army with 30,000 Model T’s as ambulances and troop carriers, water and ammunition.

When World War II started, there was a boost in Ford’s economy as they were serving both sides. They produced approximately around 2.82.352 War Jeeps in the years 1941-1945. Ford’s Willow Run bomber plant, located in the Detroit suburbs, built cars for war and not for public transportation. Ford V3000 ambulances were used in WWII by the Germans. Ford of Germany built a total of 80,000 trucks for the German army during the war.

Ford didn’t just make cars. They also made trucks, vans, and tractors. In 1925 they also made airplanes. They also produced some important automobiles in automobile history, in addition to the Ford Model T. The Ford 150 pickup continued to be a best-seller for nearly six decades. Ford Mustang is the first American “muscle car”. Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Lincoln Continental, Ford Thunderbird, Ford Transit, Ford Capri, Ford Escort are some of the most popular Ford cars.

Engines play a vital role in the success of the car. Ford produced 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 cylinder engines to date. Some of the important engines manufactured by Ford are Ford Model T engine, Flathead V-8 engine, Cobra Jet engine, Boss engine, Ecoboost engine, etc. The 1.0 Ecoboost is a UK designed 3 cylinder engine that has won awards from judges and industry experts. The Ecoboost engine is developed to save more fuel, be more environmentally friendly and less expensive. Ford is not only famous for producing beautiful cars, but also for producing one of the best engines and creating history in the competitive automobile market.

The Ford family has been a proud owner of the business for more than 100 years. It is one of the few notable brands in the world whose ownership remained in the founder’s family for more than a century. They pride themselves on producing the first car for the common man by breaking the idea that a car is owned by a rich man. Ford always created examples in the automotive industry. “$ 5 a day” is an important day in the history of mankind because around 10,000 people gave up wanting to get a job at Ford when there was a $ 5 a day wage increase. It created an impact within the society as well as the automobile industry as the production rate and quality of Ford cars increased after the increase.

Today, Ford factories are located in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, India, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Russia, Spain and many more. Henry Ford is considered to be not only an automobile manufacturer, but also a shift maker that changed the fate of the automobile industry.

Virtual reality casino guide

Have you ever imagined that at some point in your life you would go to a casino … without going to a casino? Yes, you read it correctly. “Go but not really go” is possible with advanced technology. When virtual reality (VR) emerged, many people weren’t sure whether to applaud the news or not. Some were seriously concerned, while others saw it as a big step in technology that will help transform the modern world.

We’ve come a long way from the online casinos of two decades ago, where the attempt to make casinos as realistic as possible hit a rock due to inadequate graphics and creativity. Thanks to the high technology available, you can enjoy games with crisp graphics and sound effects in popular games such as online slots and roulette.

Virtual reality technology and virtual reality casinos are becoming mainstream and accepted by hundreds of thousands of online players around the world. Some bettors prefer to play in a land based casino where they are free to walk around and choose their favorite slot machines or table games rather than online casinos. Regardless, you will find the most immersive, interactive and entertaining virtual reality casinos.

In this guide, we explore the rise of VR casinos, some of the best games you can play, the best VR casino game developers, and much more.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality is a simulation, or better explained as a computer-generated immersive world that involves the human senses. Normally, the user must wear a virtual reality headset or glasses that will take him to a virtual world in 3D. The helmet is equipped with multiple LED screens and a pre-installed stereo sound system.

Since the first VR headset sold by SEGA hit the market more than 20 years ago, the technology has made a tremendous advance in the quality and design of VR technology. There are four big name names that are closely associated with VR headsets, SONY, HTC, OSVR, and Oculus Rift. These are the leading producers and developers of virtual reality headsets.

It is important to understand early on that virtual reality technology is not only used in casinos, but also in fields such as education, healthcare, therapy, military training, and more. But the industry that is expected to benefit most greatly is the casino. In fact, reputable sites like SlotsMillion have already paved the way for the online casino.

How does the VR Casino work?

As mentioned above, you will need virtual reality glasses. Once you put on your goggles or helmet, everything will go dark before a screen appears. This is your new virtual world. The player interacts with the screen using a controller and, of course, their hands. There is a video posted by SlotsMillion Casino where viewers can witness the sweetness of playing in a virtual reality casino.

With this technology, players can enter a standard casino with slot machines, roulette tables, jazz music, bar records, lounge capes, and much more. You can choose to bet on the go or from the comfort of your couch.

What games are available in virtual reality casinos?

Although the VR casino industry is still in an embryonic stage, a couple of great games have emerged from different software developers such as Microgaming and Net Entertainment. If you are interested in playing virtual reality casino games, you will probably find a variety of over 40 titles at SlotsMillion Casino, such as slots, poker, roulette, Blackjack tournaments, Gin Rummy, and Poker Dice.

VR slots

You can expect to find titles like Starburst, Fox in Wins, Ace of Spades, Pistols and Roses, Big Bad Wolf, Go Bananas, Gonzo’s Quest, and Robbin Hood Shifting Riches.

Virtual reality blackjack

There are quite a few variations of Virtual Reality Blackjack with the same fun and excitement as online casinos. With the virtual reality glasses, you will be able to reach out and place your chips on the table, feel the cards, stand, hit, fold, just like in a traditional casino.

VR roulette

Virtual reality roulette games are the third most popular in virtual reality casinos. The reason is that it is loved by both high rollers and low budget players.

Who are the pioneers of virtual reality casino games?

Virtual reality games are spreading at an alarming rate and many gamers are drawn to them every day. As a result, two of the most reputable software developers have taken the initiative to offer players the first games in virtual reality casinos. These companies are the true visionaries who have made this dream come true. The top two pioneers are none other than multi-award winner Microgaming and Net Entertainment.

Net Entertainment

NetEnt has been in the online casino industry since 1996 and is the company responsible for popular virtual reality slot games such as Jack and the Bean Stalk and Jack’s World. The games come with high-quality 3D graphics, excellent sound effects and animations, just as you would expect from the developer.

Microgaming

Microgaming is known for offering some of the best slot titles to some of the best online casino sites in the industry. In addition to pioneering the world of virtual reality, Microgaming has developed the most exciting games that have won it multiple awards in recent years.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of virtual reality casinos?

What do I need to play in a VR casino?

Startup Error: EasyAntiCheat Not Installed – Fornite 2018 Solution

The error “Startup error: EasyAntiCheat not installed” is caused by Fortnite not being able to load the “Easy Anti-Cheat” engine that ships with the game.

While the error will prevent the game from loading properly, it is generally not caused by any deep aspect of your system.

To do this, solving the problem should be relatively straightforward. Otherwise, some additional steps may be required for it to work properly.

Causes

The main cause of the error is that the Easy Anti-Cheat application is not present.

To fix this, you need to make sure your system can a) access it b) run it.

The message that appears with this error includes:

Could not start the game

Please help us by reporting this issue: Error Code 20006

The specific causes of the problem are:

  • Fortnite cannot run Easy Anti-Cheat

  • Windows has deeper issues with your files / settings

Solution

The way to solve the problem is to reinstall the Anti-Cheat service and then make sure the game works properly.

This is a simple process:

1. Reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat

The first step is to make sure the EAC is working properly.

To do this, you must follow these steps:

  • Go to “C: Program Files Epic Games Fortnite FortniteGame Binaries Win64 EasyAntiCheat” on your hard drive (where installed)

  • Click on “EasyAntiCheat_Setup”

  • Click on “Repair Service”

  • Try to charge it again

If it works after this, it means that the problem can be considered resolved.

If it does not work, you may need to perform a “check” repair on the system.

2. Check the game files

The next step is to verify the Fortnite installation.

This is relatively simple:

  • Load the Epic Games Launcher

  • Click on “Fortnite”

  • Select the “cogwheel” next to the green “Start” button

  • In the drop-down menu, select “verify”

  • Let the process run

  • Reboot your system

  • Try to play it again

After doing this, if the game works, the problem should be fixed.

3. Reinstall VC ++

If the previous two steps don’t (should) work, Visual C ++ could be the culprit.

Visual C ++ is a library that Microsoft created and distributes for use by software developers.

Basically, it provides additional functionality to applications.

While the system is effective, it is prone to getting troublesome, often showing bugs and issues, etc.

To make sure this is not a problem for your system, you should remove any instances of the VC ++ redistributable package on your system and then replace it with a new version:

  • In Windows 7, click “Start”, then “Control Panel” and finally “Programs and Features”

  • In Windows 10, right click the “Start” button, select “Applications and Features”

  • In the list that appears, scroll down to the “Microsoft Visual C ++ Redistributable” lists

  • Write down which ones you have installed (pay special attention to the year and the architecture)

  • After doing this, browse the internet and search for “Visual C ++ Downloads”

  • Click on the Microsoft link titled “Latest Supported Visual C ++ Downloads.”

  • Download fresh copies of each of the packages you listed

  • Once this is complete, uninstall each package from your system

  • Restart your PC

  • Install each new VC ++ package (order doesn’t matter)

  • Restart your PC again

  • Try to play the game again

If more problems are found, it means you have deeper problems with Windows.

To resolve them, it is best to speak to someone with more specific experience with your system. This can come in many different ways, from online communities to paying for professional help.

How Much Protein Do You Need To Build Muscle?

How much protein do you need to build muscle? I think there have been disagreements on this for the last 100 years. In fact, since the man (or woman) first picked up a rock, pressed it on a bench, and struck a monstrous-sized pose, the most muscular; There has been a clash between the “eat until the protein comes out of your ear” group and the “you don’t need any whitening protein to build muscle – look at a rhinoceros” group.

When I started pumping iron, the two camps seemed best represented by Bill Pearl with the “you don’t need a lot of protein” and Vince Gironda, who advocated serious protein use. Following some of what Vince suggested; I ate nothing but steak and eggs for breakfast during football season and fed a ton of spaghetti on game day. It seems crazy now.

I guess I’ve followed high protein thinking for most of my life. When I exercised a lot, I averaged one gram of protein per pound of body weight. I would eat 180-220 grams of protein a day. In those periods when I was not exercising as much, I was still consuming around 100 grams a day. Did it work for me? Was it the high protein content that helped me gain nearly 210 pounds of decent muscle a few (or eight) years ago? Maybe or maybe not; He definitely couldn’t tell because he didn’t have a benchmark to follow.

So how much protein is enough protein? That question is a lot like another question asking, “How old should a man’s leg be?” One answer might be “as long as it takes to get to the ground.” You need as much protein as you need to build muscle, for you.

The Mayo Clinic recommends that your protein intake be about 10% to 35% of a 2,000 calorie diet. That amount translates to a huge range of 50 to 175 grams of protein. That’s a huge range and it doesn’t help much. Even among experts, there are some questions, or at least that is how I interpret it being given such a wide range.

And it’s no wonder, after all; The importance of protein in daily life cannot be underestimated, much less in building muscle. Protein is essential for human life. Your skin, bones, muscles, and organ tissues contain protein. Protein is also found in the blood, hormones, and enzymes.

You need protein. The question is again, how much do you need? Your body takes ingested protein and breaks it down into its amino acid components for use. The body cannot store unused protein. Unnecessary amino acids are removed from your nitrogen and stored as fat (or used for energy). Nitrogen elements are processed as waste by the kidney and liver. Not being an expert or a guru here, you may want to check all of this, but I think I’m in the ballpark.

So if you only need 100 grams but eat 180 grams, guess what, the balance of the 80 grams is fat around the gut or poop. Either way, excess causes undue stress on the body. Protein is not a good source of energy, unless you are a big cat roaming the Serengeti plains. Therefore, there is no incentive to eat more protein than you need. On the contrary, it punishes your body by consuming more than it needs.

But understand this, after all the thousands and thousands of years, there is still no scientific basis to think that high protein intake is better for building muscle. There is no scientific basis for thinking that one gram of protein is needed for every pound of body weight. There are none that I know of.

Nothing less than what appears to be common sense. If you agree, your average bear needs 45 to 70 grams of protein (female and male, respectively); So wouldn’t it be logical to think that your muscle-building brown bear would need a lot more? However, the red flag is that many supplement companies use this type of reasoning to push a lot of expensive protein powders.

As for what I suggest, well, this is what I do. At almost 49, I just don’t have the energy or desire to go back to being a gym rat. But that doesn’t mean you’re not interested in exercising or being healthy. On the contrary, with two little girls, I have a tremendous incentive to live a long life; long enough to see that my daughters eventually have daughters of their own.

I eat a balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruits. And I drink 10-15 glasses of water a day. As a true meat eater, I probably get my easy 75 grams daily. But because I exercise about 45 minutes every other day pretty hard, I now drink about two tall glasses of milk a day. And I probably eat about 12 eggs a week, more or less. All of that probably boosts my protein intake to an average of 110 grams a day, which I think works for me.

But it is all an inexact science. How do I know it works for me? Well, less than that; I’m hungry and in a bad mood. Vince Gironda used to say that protein keeps hunger pangs at bay and gives you a feeling of fullness. I’ll buy it. I know that if I drink less water, I feel thirsty. Less protein and I feel grumpy. Is that really a real reason to eat my 100-110 grams of protein? No, but it is my way of listening to my body.

And that’s ultimately the key here, I think. You need to listen to your body. Your body will tell you if you are not consuming enough complex carbohydrates. Your body will tell you if you are eating too much protein (increased girth will be a sign).

At a minimum, start with your basic protein need of 75 grams and add 50%; then evaluate how it responds. How are your workouts? What are your energy levels and how fast are you recovering? Based on those observations, reduce or add a little more. I have talked about the 3 circles and how you should move them; well, the same here.

Lastly, I no longer recommend buying tons of protein powder. Instead, I think you would do well to drink more milk (or soy) and eat a few more eggs a day. These are quality protein sources and pennies on the dollar compared to protein powder on the market today. One liter of milk and 3 eggs will add approximately 56 grams of protein to your diet. You need more?

Also, if you eat three balanced meals a day with about a quarter of a pound of meat as part of that meal; you will probably consume between 28 and 30 grams in that seat. That gives you between 80 and 90 grams a day. Now add the extra milk and eggs; that will put it in the 150 gram range. And guess what, you didn’t have to buy a nitrogen-enhanced super premium whey concentrate and a super duper high proof protein powder.

Easter in Kampala

“Next year in Jerusalem.” The words at the end of the Easter seder always give me the creeps. How many Jews for how many generations have wanted to celebrate in the Holy Land. Last year, however, I faced a dilemma. He wouldn’t be celebrating Passover in Jerusalem or even, as usual, at Nancy and Charlie Behrend’s festive table in the Denver suburbs. He would be adrift, working on the other side of the world in Kampala, Uganda. The possibility of Easter without family, friends, and a seder was great.

Three colleagues and I were heading to Kampala to work on a video series about a non-governmental organization based in Boulder, Colorado, called BeadforLife beadforlife.org, that is making a huge difference in the lives of Ugandans who suffer such poverty. extreme that kills. It is a collaboration of cultures and compassion. Ugandan women, whose lives have been crushed by the modern plagues of civil war, HIV / AIDS, hunger and homelessness, make colorful bead jewelry from recycled magazine pages. Women in North America sell them and the money goes back to Uganda for education, health care and housing. Until two years ago, the only way these women and their families survived was by working in a rock quarry, crushing stones for $ 1 a day. Each day was dedicated to the never-ending search for enough for families to get through the next day. Babies were lost to disease or sometimes thrown away, children fell asleep hungry, parents succumbed to AIDS, and children orphaned and alone. Like the night of Passover in biblical times, death was at everyone’s door.

We spent the trip in the suburbs of Kampala. Witnessing the way more than half the world lives changed life. Thousands of people crowd the Acholi neighborhood, which is packed with refugees from a senseless and brutal 19-year civil war in the north. People live in a red earth world without electricity, running water, sewage, and in many cases hope. The children have a swollen belly and tattered clothes. The houses are made of sticks and mud that fall apart in the rain. However, over the course of our stay we witnessed an incredible outpouring of spirit and generosity. What little there was, was shared. The smiles were warm and hearty. They all had light in their eyes. They sang and danced through their suffering. Women like Naiga Mary, Rose Namukasa, Achan Grace, Millie Grace, and Jajja Josephine, who refused to be defeated because of their poverty, earned income by doing math and their hard work blessed entire families and communities.

In this setting we celebrate Easter. Our hosts, Dr. Charles Steinberg, a prominent AIDS physician, who teaches native physicians how to administer antiretroviral drugs and treat the disease that has killed an entire generation of Africans, and his wife, Torkin Wakefield, co-founder of BeadforLife They took the plunge and organized an Easter seder in his apartment. His friend, William, a former Catholic priest, who has spent decades ministering in Africa, joined us. Of the four on our production team, two had never experienced an Easter seder before. We light candles and pray to heal and not hurt. We couldn’t find matza in all of Kampala, so we improvised and ate the Indian flatbread called nan. On the cover of our makeshift Haggadah was “Escape from the Quarry.” The word Haggadah means “the narrative” and tells the story of the escape of the Jews from Egypt. In light of what we were witnessing, the escape from slavery was a powerful story of freedom and liberation.

In the preface to our Haggadah we were reminded that we must let the ritual inspire us to alleviate suffering, work against injustice, re-commit to our own spiritual awakening, and leave a trail of goodness as we walk the world. We reflected on what parts of our character we wanted to eliminate, and when our weaknesses became clear, we completed the thought with an emphatic Kayn Yihee Ratzon: “so be it.” We discussed the nuances of the seder, asked the four questions, and told the story of how God sent plagues on the Egyptians that ultimately forced Pharaoh to free the Jews. We pray mightily to rid ourselves of the plagues of our modern life:

Teaching of hatred and prejudice.

Greed and greed.

Abuse of Mother Earth.

Hungry. Especially here in Africa.

Corruption of justice and government.

Poverty.

Breakdown of families and communities.

Oppression of nations and peoples.

Make the war.

Apathy and hopelessness.

We mainly talked about the incredible resolution we were witnessing and how a circle of compassion and connection was transforming lives. As we sit together, we consider what we were grateful for. With the Dayenu we proclaimed “enough” and promised not to focus on what is missing in our lives, but to be grateful for all our blessings. After witnessing the suffering and redemption in the suburbs of Kampala, it became so apparent that we have amazing blessings in our country, gifts that Third World people cannot even comprehend. By remembering the bitterness of oppression, we could savor the sweetness of freedom, a freedom we wish for all the people of the world who are enslaved by poverty and chaos. We prayed for peace and we opened the door to Elijah and welcomed him. Could any of the women who worked in the quarry for $ 1 a day be Elias fulfilling his promise to return as a poor person to see how they would treat him? Could we reach within ourselves and cast out the curses of our world that afflict hearts and countries like those of Africa and do our part to bring peace to the troubled continent? At our table in Kampala, we conclude with the words that are spoken at every seder in all parts of the world. “This year we celebrate here, but next year in Jerusalem.”

Colonoscopies are over-promoted, over-prescribed, and overcharged; consumers must resist and rebel

Introduction: some questions to set the stage

Should you trust your doctor? Is the medical system organized and controlled by the modern equivalent of highway robbers? What can we learn from the way colonoscopies are promoted and valued in the United States? What is the most important lesson to take from a brief exploration of these questions?

Here are short answers to the first three of these rhetorical questions. I am saving an answer to the last question (that is, recommended course of action) until the end.

  1. No, don’t trust your doctor, if you are lucky enough to have easy access to one or more doctors. Instead, be cautious and double-check, run independent checks on relevant issues, and get other qualified opinions. Doctors and other providers are not your enemies, but they are definitely not your friends. They are highly trained professionals who operate in a complex dysfunctional profit-oriented system. Most want to do the right thing, but pressures can lead even ethical professionals to justify that courses of action are not in your best interest. In this essay, I will argue that your interests and the public interest take a backseat to a kind of higher power: the profit motive.
  2. Yes, the medical system is highway robbery, circa 21st century.
  3. Much can be learned by taking a closer look at the colonoscopy industry complex. The procedures that are performed can serve as canaries in the coal mine of the American medical system. Pay attention, be alarmed, and do what you can to save yourself before it’s too late.

Colonoscopies, Medical Providers and Free Enterprise Run Amuck

Colonoscopies are the most expensive routine screening test in this country. A report from the Commonwealth Fund revealed that this procedure is billed at rates ranging from $ 6,385 to $ 19,438. (See Explaining America’s High Health Care Spending: International Comparison of Supply, Utilization, Price, and Quality, May 3, 2012, Volume 10.) These figures are retail rates for the uninsured; insurers generally negotiate prices below $ 3,500. Americans lucky enough to have employer-based insurance often assume that health care is basically free, despite increased copayments and deductibles, but it is not . Older people on Medicare make the same mistake, often because they are Exhausted (I mean, too tired to give a shit).

Like the high costs of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, everyone pays in the end, no pun intended.

In other Western countries, the median price for a colonoscopy is a few hundred dollars. Compare this to the US experience:

Americans pay more for almost all interactions with the medical system … A price list compiled by the International Federation of Health Plans found that medical services are more expensive in all categories, by a huge margin.

We are world leaders in medical spending, although numerous studies have shown that we do not receive better care and are less healthy than people in almost all other Western nations.

Forms of highway robbery in the fourth century America

In case you’ve been on the moon or out of touch for several years, here is a summary of why so many experts believe that the US healthcare system is out of control:

  • Doctors prescribe expensive procedures. However, the high price of ordinary ones represents our $ 2.7 trillion annual healthcare tab – 18% of GNP. ((Source: Elisabeth Rosenthal, Paying until it hurts: a case study with high costs, New York Times, June 1, 2013.)
  • Doctors promote too many tests. According to the CDC, more than 10 million Americans each year undergo colonoscopies (at a cost of $ 10 billion a year). One reason for so much testing is defensive medicine. America is as litigious as it is religious. Doctors are bound (or pressured) by insurance regulations or their employers / professional associations / associations to avoid lawsuits, rather than impoverishing patients or even having poor health outcomes.
  • Pharmaceutical companies saturate the media with direct-to-consumer merchandising. Drug saturation advertising campaigns for whatever affects you or may affect you distort the judgments of patients. Consumers’ appetite for quick fixes is encouraged. Patients are motivated to pressure providers for overrated and overrated products.
  • Greed rules. So-called non-profit hospitals, insurance companies, device manufacturers, and other medical industry players are focused on generating the highest possible profits that they can legally justify. The pursuit of maximum profitability is by far the number one goal of the American medical system.
  • High-tech and drug-focused treatments predominate. A disproportionate amount of medical care and expenses is lavished on chronic conditions in old age, leaving fewer resources for prevention, education, and acute care.
  • Costs / benefits take a backseat. Substantial medical care is lavished on ministrations that simply extend the death process.
  • There is very little incentive to act wisely. Overlooked in studies to explain the high costs and low returns on medical investments relative to other industrialized countries, it’s a disturbing reality: Americans are too fond of guns, gods, demigods, and drugs. They have little commitment to reason and critical thinking, exercise, whole plant-based foods, and the art of shaping supportive environments for themselves and others.

Colonoscopies like coal mine canaries

Colonoscopy gets my vote as the biggest scam in modern medicine. We should stop using the term colonoscopy – colonoscamia it is much more descriptive and appropriate. The biggest scam distinction is not a minor honor or a rather dubious distinction, given the abuses that could and have been documented on the US health care system. Colonoscopies are marketed through scare tactics, not unlike religions. Colonoscopy counselors sometimes describe with almost wicked delight the high chances of terrible torment and premature death from colon cancer.

A year ago, I reluctantly agreed to sit down for a pep talk with a renowned proctologist. The issue was why should I have a colonoscopy, even though there are no risk factors other than old age. I accepted the interview only after years of receiving a colonoscopy harassed by friends, family, and various doctors, including even my dentist! Graphic descriptions of the dire consequences of missing a polyp would have made Hieronymus Bosch proud. I was reminded of visions drawn by nuns about 65 years ago at St. Barnabas Parish School. The eternal fires of hell were described in such fine and vivid detail that anyone would have been convinced that the nuns had been there. I think this whole scare was designed to ensure that I never missed a Mass on Sundays. (For a while, I didn’t, although I arrived as late as possible so my presence would still count.) So I heard the colorful tone of the colonoscopy, and still decided not to. (I even wrote an essay about the interview experience.)

Colonoscopies are billed as quasi-operations. What was recently a simple office procedure has been transformed into a more complex booming business. Now there are surgery centers where lucrative colonoscopies that exceed medical guidelines are prescribed and performed. The goal is to maximize revenue; Lobbying, marketing and turf battles between specialists, in addition to huge profit margins, explain the high costs. Other tests for colon cancer are less invasive, cheaper, and just as effective.

Australia doesn’t even pay for colonoscopies as a standard screening procedure and it’s not common in other Western nations either.

The American Free Enterprise Anomaly

In this country, the government, unlike any other industrialized nation, does not regulate or otherwise intervene in medical prices, beyond setting payment rates for Medicare and Medicaid. Other nations see health care as everyone’s right and regulate hospitals and the rest of the service delivery system as public services. What conservatives like to call the free market is not so free for consumers.

Imagine if you went to a restaurant and ordered your food without having a clue what your dinner would cost. Imagine the anxiety waiting for the waiter to arrive with the bill. However, apply the healthcare model to other normal purchases, large and small. What if the groceries from the supermarket that you loaded, took home, and consumed were totaled and posted to your account, but you didn’t see the bill for days or weeks, long after you’ve processed most of what you took out? Such transactions are ridiculous, of course, and yet they are in the medical system. Sometimes I get bills for medical procedures performed a year earlier, after the hospital or doctor has given up on negotiations for full or good enough payment from the Medicare insurer.) It is strange, irrational, unfair and intolerable.

Fiancée summary and takeaway lesson

Ask yourself, Do you have to be passive and tolerate this state of affairs? Consider that it is not.

First, regarding colonoscopies, know that for most people, regular tests of blood in the stool are sufficient. Unfortunately for unwary and easily intimidated patients, settling for this low-cost option is difficult. Such resistance to colonoscopies will be strongly resisted by the medical advisers involved in the procedure. Stool testing is not a high-income producer for this industry.

What can you do to avoid spending more on lower-quality health care while feeling less and less good? You have three options: die, move, or adopt a REAL wellness lifestyle. Stay with the latter until you move or die. Personally, I go with the REAL wellness lifestyle. On the subject of colonoscopy, I prefer a whole food plant-based diet, lots of exercise, and minor cancer screening methods over the unpleasant, expensive, and questionable invasive procedure. Life is fraught with risk, and flesh inherits more slings and arrows than there will ever be expensive medical tests to detect and treat early on.

Going back to the three options (die, move or adopt a RW lifestyle), I also opt for the last one because the few countries that I would like to call home (Australia, New Zealand, Canada and El Dorado) might not have me. But of course I am really in favor of this choice because TRUE wellness is a richer way to be alive. It’s the only way to fly, or live, in my opinion, even if it didn’t save money and pain on all sorts of chronic medical problems that you would surely have to endure if you were obese, sedentary, bored, or untreatable, and I’m definitely not fat, sedentary. or boring.

Actual wellness is what I suggest to take away from this cautionary tale about colonoscamia in America.
