Is it illegal to copy Xbox 360 games?

I think it’s okay to copy Xbox 360 games for a number of reasons. However, I also think it’s not okay to rip Xbox 360 games. It depends on why you’re ripping and who you’re ripping for.

First I’ll tell you why, in certain cases, I think it’s wrong to copy games. If you are illegally copying Xbox 360 games to hack or sell to others to make money from them, it is illegal and morally wrong. This is the main reason why I think it’s not okay to copy games.

If you’re copying Xbox 360 games for backup in case something happens to your original copy, I think it’s totally fine to do so. Why? Because you are protecting your hard earned money that you spent in the game. For example, I am a member of my local volunteer fire department and we have a community Xbox 360 and everyone buys and shares games. We have a 4-tier rack full of games. As you may know, things in the firehouse break, break, and generally get rough. We also have members who don’t care about other people’s stuff and decide they want to use the Halo ODST as a coaster for their drink. Personally, I copy all the games in the firehouse as soon as I buy them, then store them in a safe place where they can’t be damaged. Then when someone uses the original disc as a frisbee or coaster and it breaks, scratches or chips… we have a backup disc that we can replace with one that is playable and works.

Of course, game companies don’t want you to copy Xbox 360 games because they’re afraid someone will do it for the wrong reason to make money and sell them (like it hurts them financially… yeah right). Moving on, let me ask you this, if your game gets scratched, cracked, or chipped, will the game producer replace it for you? No, they’re going to say “Tough break, go buy a new one.”

So if you’re only doing it to back up your games in case of an accident where they’re unplayable and you’re just trying to protect your hard-earned and spent money, then I think it’s morally okay. copy xbox 360 games
