History of dog clothes

Dog clothes were first created by the military! Yes, that is correct! Dogs that worked for the military were the first canines to wear clothes. They wore clothes for practical reasons and not for fashion. Military dogs primarily wore clothing for camouflage purposes. This helped them not to warn about enemy assaults and attacks.

Today, in addition to working in the military, the dogs also work for the police and also as service dogs. However, dogs are still more popular as household pets. And pet owners love their dogs so much that they make them wear clothes like they would their human babies!

Dog clothes have changed over the years. At first, only the basics like T-shirts and jackets were introduced. Now the dog clothing industry is as extensive as the human clothing industry! There are all kinds of clothes in addition to accessories, shoes and even jewelry for dogs! There are also clothes specially designed for occasions like Christmas and Halloween! It can easily be said here that clothing is no longer limited to humans!

Most people would like to think of dog fashion as a new age thing. However, going through history, it can be easily understood that dog clothes were not introduced for fashion purposes. They were used for practical purposes only. Dogs have been with us for more than 12,000 years. It was quite evident from the beginning that they would start wearing clothes like us.

The first case of a clothed dog dates back to the year 1833. No common man had the luxury of buying clothes for his pet back then, so it was a royal who dressed his canine companion in royal clothes! The royalty in question is Princess Victoria and she had dressed her spaniel in a royal blue jacket. The dog clothing industry really began to gain momentum in the early 1800s.

Royal families had different clothes for their pets. Just as they themselves wore different clothes at different times of the day, their dogs would do the same as well. There were separate dog clothes for the morning, for the afternoon, for the night and also for bedtime. There were also separate costumes for going to the beach! A royal pet from that time wore nothing less than a necklace made of pure gold! They also wore silver boots!
