My friends came over the weekend and brought two small gifts for my children. One gift was a small stuffed animal and a book, the other a small puzzle; but what stood out was the presentation! Presentation makes a difference! So I keep this in mind when I look at client resumes. I like a resume printed on a good quality printer, no smudges, on thick, unbleached paper, and if you email it, no italics and I like a little white space. Whether you’re delivering your resume in person to a company or passing it out at a networking event, make sure you have a fresh manicure and a good haircut. Clients often want to know a clever way to combine their chaotic work history and how to package the gifts they’ve earned throughout their military lifestyle. Yet on the other hand, the fact that youth baseball tournaments have become extremely popular in recent years means that all tournament directors, even those who run established tournaments, need to put more effort into signing up teams. Part of this team battle is putting together a well-organized tournament year after year. But it’s hard to put on a well-organized tournament if all the teams in the area are playing in Joe Schmoe’s tournament down the line. Another valuable marketing service for tournament directors is Active.com. For one reason or another, many tournament directors tend to underuse Active.com. In this case, your loss is your gain. Active.com is a website that allows users to post sporting events that they are organizing. It’s simple and free to create an account and it only takes a couple of minutes to post a tournament. Additionally, Active.com has partnered with ETeamz.com, an online platform that most youth baseball teams use to create their own websites. This association has led a large number of coaches to use Active.com to search for baseball tournaments. And, since Active.com is a national website, its services allow you to promote your tournament to teams in other states. In my experience, Active.com has been an essential tool in attracting teams from neighboring states and serves as a valuable resource that can turn your potential local tournament into a regional one.

Another free and easy online resource that is often overlooked by tournament directors is email marketing companies. Every tournament director in the country emails coaches to “promote” their tournament. Every coach in the country receives hundreds of tournament emails a year. How do your emails stand out from others? A catchy subject line and well-written sales copy can only take you so far. Online email marketing services like MailChimp allow you to use HTML graphics, add images, link to your website, and track your email response. Most of these services are free with a small number of email contacts (usually less than 1,000) and definitely help your email stand out from the rest.

Step 2: Hit early, hit often

This marketing step may seem a bit obvious but it is nonetheless essential to building a strong tournament. The sooner you post your tournament online, the more likely teams will sign up. The sooner you email your coach contacts, the more likely you are to get registrations. It’s all pretty simple, but I rarely see this marketing strategy being put to full use.

Your tournament competition may have a larger budget for promotion. They may have a more reputable name. And, they may have more connections with more coaches. But, no matter what the case, you can always get the upper hand when it comes to the timeliness of your marketing. Your tournament can be one of 20 state tournaments on the same weekend. But, if you publish and promote early, the coaches will only see your tournament, not the other 19 that will eventually be published.

I suggest putting together a promotion strategy early and sticking to it until your tournament is full. My strategy? Publish your tournament online one year before the start date and send an initial email to the coaches once published. Six months before your tournament, send another email to the coaches and follow up with a personal phone call a week later. Then repeat this strategy every month until your tournament. You would be amazed at your marketing success if you diligently follow a promotion strategy.

Step 3: build relationships

Too many tournament directors are wary of asking coaches for help in marketing their tournament. They view the manager-coach relationship as nothing more than a business relationship and keep interactions short and sweet. This is a fatal error. You must understand that as the tournament director you are providing a desired and appreciated service to the coaches. Plus, coaches contact more teams on a weekly basis than you could possibly contact.

By building relationships with youth coaches, you are gaining a marketing partner. Feel free to make friends with the trainers. Call the coaches who sign up early for your tournament and thank them. Exchange friendly emails with them regularly. And, once you establish a decent rapport, just ask if they’ll mention your tournament to other teams in the area. It’s amazing how willing coaches are to help promote your tournament to other teams if you build a relationship with them. I know a tournament director who has a habit of sending Christmas cards from his organization to the coaches who participate in his tournaments. The simple friendly gesture pays off tenfold when he fills the tournaments year after year.

Step 4: go old school

Online marketing is fast, easy and cheap. And often online marketing is extremely effective. But, never underestimate the good old postal mail. All tournament directors in the country promote their tournaments via email. And, don’t get me wrong, there are many good reasons to do this. But do you make a habit of opening and reading every bulk email you receive? Or just hit the delete button? Even the most successful tournament marketing emails I send don’t get much higher than a 15% open rate. The average email in this industry is opened by about 6% of every contact it is sent to. If you send an email to 100 trainers, you’ll be lucky if 15 of them read your email.

Postal mail, on the other hand, tends to be much more effective. After all, I personally open every letter I receive. It may seem outdated, but I suggest sending a personalized letter to each coach in your contact database and inviting them to participate in your next tournament. Your letter will surely be read and appreciated. Heck, if I were a coach, I would definitely sign up for a tournament that I was personally invited to.

Step 5: pound the pavement

When it comes to marketing your youth baseball tournament, other tournaments can become one of your biggest assets. Every spring and summer weekend in every city in the county there will surely be at least one tournament. Youth baseball tournaments are marked by high attendance and timeout pitches for teams. Take advantage of these other tournaments when you market yours. Get in the habit of spending an hour or two at other local tournaments every weekend. How to Make the Best Paleo Primal Sardine Smoothie

It has recently come to my attention that, for some reason, there are very few sardine smoothie recipes. In fact, there are not enough good fish shake recipes of any kind. So this must be the right time to share with you one of my favorite sardine smoothie creations.

Why sardines? For one, they are small. Smaller fish are lower on the food chain and have much less contaminants (mercury, PCBs, etc.) stored in their fat than larger fish. When it comes to fish, smaller is always better. (This is most likely why you’ll have a hard time finding even one whale shake recipe.)

Sardines may be small, but when it comes to nutrition, they’re huge. Did you know that a sardine shake contains approximately 25% of your daily calcium requirement? On top of that, they’re loaded with vitamin D, B12, niacin, phosphorus, selenium, and of course protein. As a bonus, sardines are also highly anti-inflammatory.

Personally, I think most people don’t think enough about the inflammatory aspects of the foods they eat. Chronic or low-grade, long-lasting inflammation is thought to be the root cause of many age-related diseases (just about everything from arthritis to Alzheimer’s, according to some sources). Some foods are inflammatory and some are anti-inflammatory. It’s always a good idea to balance the two as much as you can.

Now that we’re all excited about sardines, how do we incorporate them into a delicious smoothie? It is a two step process and I will walk you through it.

Step one, make the basic juice.

This is what you need:

a juicer

several stalks of celery

1/4 yellow onion

2 or 3 jalapeño peppers

a raw beet

Here’s what you do:

Put all the above ingredients in the juicer and make the juice.

Step two, make the smoothie.

This is what you need:

a food processor

A can of sardines

The juice from above

2 or 3 shots of tequila (optional)

Here’s what you do:

Combine the first two ingredients and place them in the food processor. Blend until smooth.

Since this seems to be an acquired taste for some people, you may want to take the optional shots of tequila before drinking the shake.

Another way to enjoy the health benefits of sardines is to put them in your salad. That’s generally what I do.

The Fish Pot is Michael Winner’s Favorite Barbadian Restaurant in 2007

Every year, Michael Winner spends his Christmas vacation in Barbados, staying at the world famous Sandy Lane Hotel. It’s arguably one of the world’s most exclusive places to see and be seen this festive time of year, with room rates approaching $3,000 a night with a 14-night minimum stay required. Food and drink not included. Release the dogs!

And as he does every year on his return to London, Michael Winner publishes a Barbados Restaurant Review in the Sunday Times “Winners’ Dinners” column. Restaurant managers and owners have been known to enter DEFCOM 3 on high alert when “Winner, Sandy Lane, 444-2000” appears in his reservation book. His ascerbic (some claim cruel) wit and take-no-prisoners style of restaurant review has fans and haters alike who agree on one thing: you either love him or hate him.

Michael Winner has made more than 30 films in his directing career. His best known film was probably DEATH WISH, starring Charles Bronson. But his weekly Winner’s Dinners column for The Sunday Times is how he’s best known among foodies in the UK and the US. He tours the world’s best restaurants, then provides a roundup of what went wrong, either or both.

In his recently published Barbados Review on February 10, Michael Winner mentioned how the food at Sandy Lane had tanked last Christmas season. Yet he still ate 35 lunches and dinners there, only going out seven times. One of the restaurants he visited was The Fishpot, a restaurant he had never visited in the 25 years since he came to Barbados. The Fishpot Restaurant, with its 21-room hotel across the street, is owned by Andrew and Patricia Warden. Winner stated that The Fish Pot is “absolutely great…”

Winner was not so kind to The Cliff, calling it “the so-called great rubbish dump of Barbados”. Twisting the knife, he went on to say that it was “the world’s most oversold second-rate place.” Oh. We do not share Mr. Winner’s vitriol having dined there recently with friends. A little stuffy maybe, but we were in our own little world and tuned out from little annoyances, like refilling water glasses mid-sip; Less is more, please. We’ll agree with his comment about the boring nonchalance and smug attitude of the 20-something front desk staff, but we find it vaguely amusing in a WHO’S THE CLERK AND WHO’S THE CUSTOMER kind of way. In short, more good than bad.

Another restaurant that felt the wrath of her indigestion was Daphne’s, Daphne’s sister restaurant in London. Mr. Winner said that Daphne’s “occasionally has reasonable food, but the service is so slow that everyone complains a lot.” We too have found the service spotty, but General Manager Marco Pavone works very hard to overcome the island mentality of some waiters which is the Achilles heel of most restaurants in Barbados. Daphne’s consistently delivers quality, innovative Italian cuisine and you just can’t beat the view.

But number 1 on Mr Winner’s Barbados chart was The Fishpot. “Turn left off of Sandy Lane and drive for 25 minutes, passing endless billboards hiding upcoming apartment blocks and foreboding signs on vacant land that read: Prime Residential Site For Sale. Eventually you arrive in old Barbados There are little wooden houses, beachside market stalls, reedbeds, and an aura of better times.” That’s a Bajan version of MAPQUEST. “At Fishpot you sit by the sea, in an old 17th century fort. It’s quiet. It’s beautiful. It’s what Caribbean life should be.”

Michael Winner first went to lunch with Richard Hanlon, who he says is his “favorite interior designer,” and was so impressed that he returned to dinner with music mogul Lucian Grainge and his wife.

“For lunch, Fishpot had fresh local lobster, which is more than Sandy Lane could offer at the time. They featured lobster from Belize that must have been on ice for so long that all of its spirit and structure was gone.”
