The Big Carrot (A Minnesota Short Story – 1958) Reissued 3-2009 (In English and Spanish)

[186 Cayuga St., St. Paul, Minnesota: 1958]

Ernest Brandt, who was my mother’s boyfriend for about forty years, discovered my secret when I was eleven, back in the summer of ’58, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He had about half an acre of land in the city, and a big garden, and he gave me a little section to grow carrots.

Well, I was grateful, so I tried to imitate him by planting my seeds in several rows: not too close to each other, not too far apart, and I would pull weeds, water my garden plot, etcetera, etcetera; but my carrots did not grow like yours: but my envy did.

Well, we lived next door to each other; a vacant lot separated the houses. In any case, it wasn’t a long walk to his garden: just a short walk across the field and a mere hop over his fence.

So every once in a while he would go and check my garden to see how my carrots were doing and they weren’t great, not compared to his anyway. Therefore, that day, a summer day, in 1958, my mother had just come down to visit him (he could see her walking from our house to his), and I knew then that she would not return to the garden for the rest of the night. . They took turns going to each other’s houses, but as time passed and I got older, it seemed that she preferred her house, perhaps because of my grandfather and her bad mood.

In any case, Ernest came into his house and I started to look at his garden, comparing it to mine, since they were next to each other, and he had many different vegetables growing in his garden, but somehow he was more interested in how her carrots were growing. The tops of his carrots were as round as my writing, and mine were as round as my thumb: this was not fair, not fair at all, so I felt, and envy came over me, like white on rice.

So I looked here and there, especially at the back door that led to a wooden platform, a kind of open porch, to see if Ernie was coming, and he wasn’t. I carefully dug around a big carrot of his, pulled it out, from the last row by the fence, surely I thought, I wouldn’t miss this single big carrot among so many. Then I put the dirt around him so he wouldn’t expect any dirty deeds to be done to him (but life is never that sweet and simple, is it: what goes around comes around, and when it does, it often hits you).

So the thing was done, and I went back home to watch TV with Grandpa. I hid some apples on the side of the sofa like I used to do so Grandpa wouldn’t see them, because he was sitting across from me, looking at me like always. , like a hawk, and watching TV as usual, a western as he liked more often, and when he would see my fruit, he would say: “When are you going to stop eating?” the pipe half out of his mouth, as if it were going to fall to the floor at any moment, half lit he would leave it in the ashtray smoldering slowly, he would lean back in the chair again, he would go back to concentrating on his western.

Consequently, I hid the rest of my fruit, and he thought I was eating my first apple or orange the whole time, and that was it, and he wouldn’t realize my little ploy until I was brave enough to get up. and I go out to the kitchen I open the noisy refrigerator, and who could hide that farce, it would still be my fifth or sixth.

Anyway, around 9:30 pm, my mom came home with Ernie, he always walked her home, and they were in the kitchen. My mother asked me to come into the kitchen for a moment, and every time she asked me to, she knew she was in trouble. And I was in trouble, and I went to the kitchen. Ernie was there with a big carrot in his hand, for a moment I thought it was just some vegetables from his garden that he used to bring home for my grandfather or my mother, and he said:

“Does this look familiar?”

“No,” I said, “why?” (But of course it looked very familiar.)

“I think so,” my mother said, a hawk’s eye piercing me.

“Well,” she said, “Ernie found this in your garden and for some strange reason it didn’t seem to belong in there with all your little carrots.”

He had planted it again, you see, thinking how proud he would be to show it off later.

“Yeah,” I said (I knew I couldn’t talk to help it), and added, “Yo, I didn’t think taking a carrot would matter, I mean you have all the big ones, I only have little ones.”

Maybe some logic to my statement, but surely no justification for the theft and I guess that’s what it really was. Looking back now, I think they were trying to contain the humor of the situation, but they were stealing anyway and had to be dealt with. Little white sins, or distortions or deletions, they all add up after a while and become big white sins, and then who knows where it might go, or where it would lead, and I’m sure that’s what my mother was thinking. . But I would never have made a thief; I got caught every time, that is, the few times I tried to get my way.

“Didn’t it seem obvious that it would stand out?” asked my mother (I think envy blinded me). I just shrugged, I wasn’t thinking logically.

He seemed a bit anxious to be caught; I guess he was more sorry for getting caught, less for taking the carrot: in any case, I said, “I never thought of that.” And that was the truth.

The Big Carrot

[Calle Cayuga # 186, San Pablo, Minnesota: 1958]

Ernesto Brandt, who was in love with my mother for nearly forty years, discovered my secret when I was one year old, in the summer of 1958 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. He had about half an acre of land in the city and a large garden and he had given me a small section of it to plant carrots.

Well, I was very grateful and so I tried to imitate him by planting my seeds in several rows, not too close to each other and not too far apart either, and I would pull out the weeds, water the piece of the garden, etc.; but my carrots didn’t grow like his, but my envy did.

Well, we lived close to each other; with an empty lot that separated the houses. In any case, it was not a long walk to his garden; just a short run across the field and a simple hop over his fence.

That’s why every once in a while he would check my garden to see how my carrots were doing and they weren’t very good, not compared to his, anyway. So, this summer day in 1958, my mother had just come down to visit him (he could see her walking towards her house) and therefore I knew that he would not return to the garden for the restaurant in the evening. They took turns going to each other’s house, but as time passed and I got older, it seemed that she preferred to go to his house, perhaps due to my grandfather and his bad temper.

In any case, Ernesto entered his house, and I kept looking at his garden, comparing it to mine, since they were next to each other, and he had many vegetables growing in his garden, but somehow I was more interested in seeing how his carrots were growing. The tops of his carrots were as round as my wrists, while mine were as round as my thumb; This was not fair, not by any means, that’s what I felt, and envy took over me, like my shadow.

Consequently, I looked here and there, mostly toward the back door that led out onto a wooden platform, some kind of open terrace, to see if Erni was coming, and he wasn’t. I carefully dug around one of his large carrots, and pulled it out, from the back row of the fence. He thought that surely he would not notice this single large carrot among many others. Then I filled the hole with dirt, so he wouldn’t know that someone had played a dirty deed on him (but life isn’t always so sweet and simple, it is: what comes and goes and comes back, and when this happens it often crashes right into you)

Then the fact was given and I went back home to watch television with my grandfather-I hid a few apples by the side of the sofa, as usual so that my grandfather wouldn’t see them, because he sat in front of me, looking at me like a hawk as always, and watching a western as often as he liked, and when he would look at my fruit he would say “when are you going to stop eating!” his pipe almost half out of his mouth, as if it was going to fall to the floor at any memory, he would put it on the half-lit ashtray burning slowly, and settle back on his couch focusing on his western again.

So I hid the rest of my fruit, and he thought I was eating my first apple or orange every time, and he didn’t find out about my little ploy until I was brave enough to get up and go into the kitchen to open the fridge. noisy, and who could hide that charade, although it would be my fifth or sixth fruit.

In any case, around 9:30 at night, my mother came with Erni, he always accompanied her back home, and they were in the kitchen. My mother asked me to go to the kitchen for a few minutes. Every time she asked me this I knew she was in trouble. And she was in trouble, and she ran into the kitchen. Erni was there with a big carrot in his hands, for a memory he thought that some of his garden were just vegetables, since he frequently brought some to the house for my grandfather or my mother, and he said:

“Does it look familiar?”

“No” I said, “why” (but of course this one looked very familiar)

“I think it is,” my mother said, her hawk eyes piercing me.

“Well,” she said, “Erni found this in your garden and for some weird reason it seemed like it didn’t belong there with all your little carrots.”

I had replanted it, you see, thinking how proud I would be to show it off later.

“Yeah” I said (I knew I couldn’t get away) adding “Yo, I didn’t think pulling out a carrot would matter, I mean you have all those big carrots, while I only have little ones”

Maybe it’s a bit of logic to my argument, but for sure it wasn’t a justification for the robbery and I suppose that this was in reality. Now that I think back, I think they were trying to hold back their laughter at the hilarity of the situation, but it was a robbery, nothing less, and it had to be treated as such. Little white sins, distortions, or deletions, they all add up after a while and surely turned into huge white sins, and then who knows where they might go, or lead, and I’m sure that was what my mother was thinking. . But I would never have become a thief, always flu discover, that is the few times I tried to get away with something.

“Didn’t it seem obvious to you that this one would stand out?” my mother asked me (I think my envy blinded me). I just shrugged my shoulders, I wasn’t thinking reasonably.

He seemed a bit worried about being found out; I think he was more sorry for having been found out and less sorry for having picked up the carrot; in any case, I said: “he never thought of it that way.” And that was the truth.

Edward Leedskalnin Generator – Generate your own electricity with your Flywheel Generator

The Edward Leedskalnin Generator, also known as the “flywheel,” was the brainchild of this Latvian emigrant who was obsessed with the achievements of ancient civilizations like the Aztecs and ancient Egyptians. In this article I will tell you all about Leedskalnin the man, his inventions (including the generator) and how today you can generate your own electricity thanks to the work of pioneers like him.

Midfielder Ed Leedskalnin

Leedskalnin’s flywheel was the result of his years of studying the cultures of ancient civilizations. He built it in the early 20th century, long before the Internet was invented.

Part of their inspiration is believed to have originated from the drawings and artwork left behind by these civilizations. In fact, his flyer bears an uncanny resemblance to an ancient Egyptian drawing and many believe this is confirmation of his claims.

The flywheel is a type of magnetic motor generator that is capable of generating electricity. Unlike most others, it features a large steering wheel. Many also believe that the geographical location of the Leedskalnin generator may have important significance.

coral castle

Leedskalnin’s other great invention was Coral Castle, the site of a huge monument in Florida where he worked and lived. For 20 years, he worked nights to carve nearly a million kilograms of limestone into his monument to an ex-fiancée who had left him years before.

No one knows exactly how the diminutive Leedskalnin built and moved the massive pieces (each weighing up to 30 tons) that make up his monument. Even several decades after his death, an excavator was used to try to move one of the stones, but it failed.

Many people believe that Leedskalnin used his Flywheel to help him or that both the Flywheel and Coral Castle share something in common that allows for the production of large amounts of energy without fuel.

Zero point

We know this today as a marginal area of physics known as “zero point.” The zero point asserts that energy need not be created from fuel (as conventional physics holds), but can be obtained from somewhere else if the conditions (specifically magnetic and gravitational) are right.

Since Leedskalnin’s Flywheel, many other experimenters have created their own magnetic motor generators. While few of these use a flywheel or are as large as the flywheel, they are capable of generating anywhere from a few milliwatts to several tens of kilowatts.

How to generate 7 kilowatts for your own home

Today, there is no need to play and experiment. By investing in a good magnetic motor guide, you can follow simple steps and diagrams to build your own simple device that is nothing more than a simple rotor, some magnets, and some basic electrical wiring. Such a device can generate up to 7 kilowatts of electricity for your home, which is more than enough for most people’s household needs. In just a few days, a person may never need to pay an energy bill again.

HTC’s futuristic no-gimmick M9 smartphone

One of the favorite phones of all time is the HTC One (M8). It was loved for its beautiful design, gorgeous display, and excellent build. But some flaws arose in it, namely the UltraPixel camera, the phone ceased to become the best. To correct that, the HTC One M9 has arrived. It has a proper 20 MP camera on the back and the design has been redesigned without losing the features that made it special. Here are some impressions that would make the M9 HTC’s biggest hope for 2015.

Construction design

Over the past three years, HTC has built a reputation for great design and top-notch build quality. The M8 was designed for feel and the M9 retained many of the sharp edged designs of the original. The front is angular while the back is curved, with highly polished sides and different colored finishes.

There seems to be a compromise in the design, albeit very well done. HTC tells that there are many step processes of coating, machining, chamfering. The buttons are scratch resistant and have different textures, while the rear camera comes with a sapphire crystal over the lens.

Another thing worth mentioning about the M9 is its ‘table presence’. It’s like a clunking car door and depends entirely on how much you enjoy it.

The specifications

Like the latest phones out there, there’s a Snapdragon 810 chip and 3GB of RAM that provide enough power to handle the most demanding apps, videos, and games. The display is a 5-inch 1080p display without any display upgrade from the previous M8.

On the screen

The availability of the Sense 7 interface helps in better customization of Android. The Themes app, apart from changing some colors, reworks the textures, icons, clock, fonts and sounds. As you select an image for your home screen, the app chooses the colors and fonts to suit it. Sense Home is also aware of the context in which it is being used, the time it is being used and acts accordingly.

boom and shake the phone

The presence of finely perforated grilles on both sides of the M9 makes Boomsound one of HTC’s top flagships. A three-finger swipe sends different Dolby-enabled songs from the same phone to different speakers in multiple rooms.

Ultra Selfie Sunrise

The new M9 has a 20MP snapper on the back that produces proper big photos of people’s faces by using the ‘exposure engine’. You can even record 4K video with your smartphone. With the presence of a selfie camera, an ultra-pixel sensor, one can do without the use of flash.

For easy photo browsing, different snapshots can be collected in One Gallery app, as it links Drive/Facebook/Dropbox/Flickr/Instagram images in one place and makes searching easy.

There may be phones that can boast a lot of futuristic features, but M9 is still a great example of no-gimmicks design, with a smart interface and stunning build quality.

Fairy tales and identity theft

My mom used to put me to sleep reading fairy tales. I always enjoyed those stories, especially the one about Cinderella and Snow White. As soon as I was old enough to choose my own clothes, toys, and accessories, I always made it a point that my mom would buy me things that had a picture of Cinderella or Snow White on them. I became obsessed and wanted to be like these princesses to the point that I grew up knowing that at one point or another I would meet my own prince and find my true love.

I’m all grown up now and I’ve matured. Despite that, my love for fairy tales never waned. Now I have children of my own and I feel that now is their time to love the fairy tales that I once loved as a child. I bought a handful of these classic stories on CD and asked my son to watch them when school is out (my son is not allowed to watch TV on school days). He loved them and I like the way my son responded to these stories. I see myself on my childish back during the days when he was still a gullible child.

One night my husband and I decided to do a fairy tale marathon with our daughter. We started watching fairy tales after dinner and kept going until we finished three: Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and Mulan. We go to bed happy and dreamy. We feel like little children.

As I lay in bed that night, I began to reflect on the fairy tales we had just seen. That night, he was a cross between being a kid and being an adult. I got to thinking about the plots of the story and how the characters went from being the underdog to being the most beautiful princess in the kingdom (like in the case of Snow White), or getting closer to the man of your dreams (like that one from Ariel). . Finally, I came to a conclusion. These three princesses or ladies that I liked so much when I was a child were basically identity theft criminals!

I wanted to laugh at myself that night, but just so you understand, this is how I came to the conclusion.

Cinderella: She was a house helper who, with the help of her friends and her fairy mother, was able to assume the identity of the most beautiful girl in the kingdom. She was able to trick the prince, but when the clock struck 12, she was forced to revert to her original identity.

The Little Mermaid: Ariel was so in love with the prince she rescued that she was so willing to give up her mermaid status to be with the human being she loved. She drank a potion that allowed her to be a “normal” human with legs and lived with the identity until the prince married another.

Mulan: This is a clear case of identity theft. Mulan assumed the identity of his father because he didn’t want his father to join the army because he was too old.

It’s okay, I know. Their motives were noble, but they’re still identity thieves, right?

How to achieve a better body using exercises at home

After working out for years I have finally developed what I and others think is the perfect body. At 172lbs I am a solid brick. Here you will learn many tips and exercises that you can do for you to gain the perfect body. Below are some suggested exercises that aim to get you out of your chair and into some exercise at home. Although you can buy home exercise equipment, the only items you may need to buy are some dumbbells. Regardless of whether you are using weights or just doing conventional exercises, the body needs a daily workout.

To ensure you get the best possible results, you need to work every muscle in your body, which can be done simply by stretching. The perfect body is in everyone’s opinion different regardless of whether your physique is muscular or thin. Exercising can sharpen both the body and the mind. Both researchers and trainers have found that it is best to stretch before beginning your workout. What this does is loosen up your muscles, allowing them to contract more to burn better, which makes for a better workout. The body can only take so much, which is tested through pain. To limit the pain you must stretch.

How I achieved my perfect body is not with weights but with cardio. I started designing several unique workout routines that have sculpted my body and now I’m ready to share them with others. This workout takes 2 hours of your time to achieve a better body as well as personal physical and mental health.

I started doing 100 pushups a day for 1 week in sets of 10. The next week I did 200 pushups in sets of 15. Then I did 300 pushups in sets of 20. Now! it’s time to get fancy. Now I add a different style in the way that I do my push ups, using a chair, putting my feet on it and doing the push ups, this style is considered an incline push up. This type of pushup builds your upper chest, shoulders, neck, upper and lower back, and also works your arms. This is an effective push-up that I do 200 push-ups in sets of 20.

Some people do crunches, but I prefer crunches. They are more effective and work all the lower abdominal muscles. Crunches are done between push-ups, so allow yourself 2-minute breaks. To perform the perfect crunch, you should lie on your back, raise your legs to chest level, and bring your chin to your knees. After 10 sets of 10, you will feel a burn in your abdomen.

That means you did a great workout. Remember it’s your body, so don’t kid yourself. Next week, just like the pushups, you add 5 more crunches to your workout and with that you add a posing session. Meaning you hold the last crunch after each set for a 10 second count. Feeling arrogant now, huh? Well, don’t look in the mirror yet, champ, we’re just getting started. Now do 20 sit-ups per set and add a waist twist between each sit-up.

Legs are great for training because you can wear them all day. If you go upstairs to get something and then back downstairs, that was a leg workout. A great leg workout that is great is jogging. Maintain a regular breath throughout the exercises, try not to hold your breath, your muscles will need that oxygen. Jogging is a great exercise that is excellent for health. You can condition your legs as well as condition your lungs. I run 2 miles every day except Sunday. It’s great if you have a dog because dogs make great running partners. Sometimes I forget who trains whom. Another great exercise for the legs is calf raises. These can be done on a ladder or steps.

What you do is stand on the edge of the step and reach for the sky standing on your toes. These can also be done between push-up and sit-up sessions. These work the calf and thigh muscles. Start by doing sets of 50, then upgrade to whatever number you feel you need to burn. What is the burn? Well, the burn is an indication of a good workout of the specific area that is burning. Follow these steps and you will have a great body and live a healthier life.

Achieving the perfect body is not easy. You must want and work hard to achieve and maintain the perfect body. Using these exercises is the first step in doing so. It is your body and you must take care of it while you still control it. Improve your training every week and in 3 months you will see an incredible difference everywhere. After 3 months look in the mirror at what you shaped without weights. Now imagine how you can look with the help of dumbbells. Weight lifting is a great way to build your body, but with weights you need to stick to them or the muscle won’t set up properly later in life.

Now that you’re on your way to having the perfect body, how does it feel? I answer that, great. New workout strategies will be posted every week, so stay updated and you’ll have your best body before summer starts. Love your body, love yourself. These exercises are just a few of many, but they will help you firm up, tone up, and stay active. They will allow you to perform your daily tasks more easily. Thanks for your time.

How well are we preparing the next generation?

“There’s just a problem with common sense; it’s not very common.”

– Bryce’s Law

We have some very bright and ambitious young people joining the workforce now, but they are doing so at a very different time in the business world. Thanks to technology, we now live and work in a society that is moving much faster than the one I joined just three decades ago. It is also a much more competitive environment due to changing economic conditions. It’s true that the Greatest Generation has basically moved on, but the Baby Boomers are still firmly in place and not ready to retire anytime soon. This means that the class of 2007 will be competing not only with 20-, 30-, and 40-year-olds, but also 50- and 60-year-olds who can’t afford to retire.

This got me thinking about how well we are preparing the next generation of workers. Are we really training them to succeed or are we setting them up to fail? Sure, they may be well educated in their professional area of expertise, but I’m finding a remarkable number who lack basic street knowledge. Somewhere between the safety of home and school and the bitter realities of the real world, there is a gap in preparing our youth for adulthood. In a way, it’s like being a skydiver for the first time, except you’re pushed out the door with no instructions on what to do. This can be very traumatic for young people who tend to feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities of adult life.

At school, students only cared about attending class, absorbing the material, eating, and their social lives. But now in adulthood, they suddenly have to deal with things like insurance, taxes, housing, transportation, banking, investing, retirement accounts, health care, nutrition, bill payment, corporate culture, etiquette, clothing, career development, ethics. commercial, office politics, networking, employment, management, etc. Oh yeah, and I work. They may have been adequately trained for their profession, but no one is preparing them to make the transition to adulthood.

Parents have not prepared them. If anything, they have shielded their youth from reality for far too long. For example, many children today have not had to mow the lawn, wash the dishes, push a broom, or hold a part-time job. Instead, they were free to focus on their homework and video games. In other words, parents have failed to instill the concept of simple responsibility and the value of a dollar. Many parents today are “hands-off” meaning they are happy to let others raise their children for them, be it a relative, babysitter, coach or teacher, thus giving them some free time to rest. and relax. .

Teachers haven’t prepared them either, but in their defense this shouldn’t be in their job description. Instead, they should be concerned with teaching academic subjects, such as math, literature, languages, science, etc. However, as many parents have dropped the ball, teachers have been forced to become surrogate parents, something they are not necessarily trained or suited to do.

Ultimately, this means that today’s corporate managers inherit a generation of gullible youngsters with unbridled enthusiasm who have a hard time adjusting to the corporate world. Many of this generation seem to believe that they are uniquely different, that the old established rules of today’s corporate culture no longer apply to them; that corporations must adapt to them, not the other way around. Such naivety can be dangerous and lead to your demise as reality sets in.

To overcome this problem, perhaps we can help our youth by devising a new type of curriculum that teaches things like:

  • Personal organization: for example, administration of finances, insurance, housing, transportation, etc.
  • Adaptation to the Corporate Culture – how to understand the culture and adapt to it. This would include discussions on business ethics and the study of change.
  • Professional development: teaching craft concepts, continuous improvement, and basic business skills.
  • Social Skills: How to communicate and socialize effectively in an office environment.
  • Workplace Do’s and Don’ts: Discuss the realities of employment, company policy manuals, and other legal issues.
  • Management 101: Teaching basic management concepts and rules to help “newbies” adjust to corporate culture.

Actually, none of this is new. We’ve all had to learn it through Hard Knock School. However, if the next generation is ever going to have a chance in today’s fast-paced world, we have to drive this process forward for them. Otherwise, they will have a hard time surviving. Basically, what is needed is a simple parental advice.

If you’d like to discuss this with me in more depth, feel free to email me.

Keep faith.
