How to paint your snowboard

If you’re a typical snowboarder, you want to be a little unique and stand out on the slopes. One way to do this is with the snowboarding clothing of your choice. However, another very popular way to do this is to paint your snowboard.

You can do it yourself, if you have the time and patience. Basically, to do a good job, you need to go through four steps: prepare the board, prime it, paint it, and seal it.

However, to start with, you will need a good working area. There are advantages to painting both indoors and outdoors. If you have an indoor work area, make sure the ventilation system is good enough to exhaust paint fumes from the area. If your work area is located outdoors, your main concern will be finding a windless area where there are little or no drafts so they won’t interfere with your paint job.

To ensure that the board is clean, wipe any dirt from the surface to be painted with a clean, damp cloth. You will also want to remove any wax buildup. Any good wax remover from your local hardware or grocery store should do the job. Then you want to roughen the surface of the board with fine sandpaper. This will prepare it to receive the primer coat. And finally, cover the joint holes with cotton swabs to prevent paint or primer from clogging them.

Once the prep work is done, priming is relatively easy. just spray it according to the directions on the spray can. Basically though, you want to avoid over-priming the board. So instead of trying to do everything in one pass, if necessary, make several light passes until you’ve covered the board well. The important thing is to keep the spray can moving so you don’t get the primer pooling in spots. Then let the primer dry.

When painting the snowboard, lay down the ground colors first, again using several light coats, if necessary rather than one heavy coat. When you’re happy with the density and colors of the background, you can use stencils to apply any design or logo to the board.

The penultimate step is to seal the board with a clear coat. This is usually a multi-step process, as you’ll want to apply three or four coats to the board.

Finally, to give your dash that nice glossy finish, get some rubbing compound at your local auto supply store and give the surface a good polish.

For years we’ve all heard all the dire warnings repeated over and over again about how sweating in a sauna suit can cause death, sweating will dehydrate the body, likely cause a heart attack, increases the chances of fainting, and in general, it is not healthy! Afraid of sweating? Do not be! The question to ask yourself is: Is this fact or fiction?

The problem with this type of warning is that as “thinking” people, we have never taken the time to stop and “think” to ask the so-called experts, WHY? Why is it dangerous to sweat in a sauna suit? Sure we’ve heard the same run-of-the-mill information repeated over and over again, but have you ever bothered to investigate the effects of sweating yourself? My wild guess is, probably not! Because like most people, you tend to go with the majority. It’s that human nature thing about all of us, where we want and need to fit in with the “crowd” because we want to be accepted. After all, if some doctor or “expert” tells you something like “sweating is bad for your health”, you believe it. But remember this, what is the general warning about doctors and experts? To always have a second and third opinion, right? Good!

The health benefits of sweating

According to Dr. Jacquline Krohn (2000) “Our bodies are like sponges that absorb the chemicals we are exposed to. Much of that toxic concoction is shed through the skin in sweat. In fact, sweat often has a higher concentration of trace elements such as nickel, cadmium, and mercury than urine.”

What you may not have heard is that most people sweat when they exercise or exert themselves, and this type of sweating is natural and healthy (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research 2009).

The cause of sweating comes from your body’s temperature regulation system, specifically your sweat glands. Your skin has two types of sweat puffs: eccrine puffs and apocrine puffs. Eccrine tassels are found over most of their body, opening directly above the skin surface. Apocrine glands also cover most of your body and develop in areas where hair follicles are abundant, such as the scalp, armpits, and groin (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research 2009).

When your body temperature rises, your autonomic nervous system stimulates your eccrine glands to secrete fluid onto the surface of your skin, where it cools your body as it evaporates. This fluid (sweat) is composed mainly of water and salt (sodium chloride) and contains trace amounts of other electrolytes; substances that help regulate fluid balance in your body, as well as substances such as urea (a nitrogenous compound found in urine produced through the breakdown of protein or toxins). Because some people may abuse a great modern invention like the sauna suit and try to lose all their weight in one day by wearing a sauna suit for too long. Admit it, you know some crazy people who think they can put on a sauna suit for 24 hours and sweat out ten years of bad eating habits. This is the dangerous part of sauna suits, ignorant people also have money to buy them; unfortunately there is no law against a jerk buying a sauna suit.

Lack of basic intelligence and inability to use common sense is the biggest danger factor, not the sauna suit itself.

The Life of Lord Byron by John Galt

John Galt published his Life of Lord Byron in 1830, just six years after the poet’s death in Missolonghi, in what is now modern Greece and then part of the Ottoman Empire. Byron had been taking him around the Mediterranean for several years, his entourage much bigger than a backpack. But one feels that for Byron he was working towards the reestablishment of a classical ideal, a quintessential democracy that existed longer in school textbooks than in ancient Greece. Perhaps “liberal” is too strong a word for Byron… Perhaps “libertarian” would be closer to the modern equivalent. He was in favor of individual liberty, what he saw as the natural order and more democracy, although this probably did not include women or the lower classes.

How far we have progressed in the last two hundred years can be judged by the fact that Byron secured both personal fame and office prestige in his own time with certain personal characteristics. He went to public school and Oxbridge, studied ancient Greek, achieved political status and public fame while largely ignorant of the scientific advances of his day, was a libertarian, and had various failures in both personal and family relationships. It couldn’t happen now, right?

Does the future already exist?

Suppose we can really predict the future with certainty. Our first reaction may be excitement and joy. Those winning lottery numbers are out there somewhere, ready for the taking.

But let’s think again. This means that the future already exists, and our existence is a bit like being in a (ready-made) movie. What we perceive now is simply the frame that is currently being projected on the screen. But tomorrow, the day after, next week, next year, and so on, until the end of the universe, they’re already in the can. Nothing we say, think, feel, or do really matters one iota. We are powerless puppets enslaved within an inflexible and inescapable destiny.

Wouldn’t that be a nightmare?

Fortunately, I don’t believe that the true nature of reality is that of a fixed destiny. Despite the fact that the world appears to be ordered and to obey the laws of cause and effect, science has discovered that, at its most fundamental level, the physical world is anything but orderly, and every basic particle appears to behave randomly. Usually, because we observe millions of these tiny particles acting together, their individual randomness is averaged out and we perceive the illusion of order.

Examples of precognition

Having concluded that the future does not exist, it follows that it cannot be predicted. Yet history is literate with examples of seemingly amazing precognition. Here are a few:

In 1966, a coal waste landslide at a school in Aberfan, Wales, killed 28 adults and 116 children. Many people reported premonitions of the disaster, including a child victim who told her mother of a dream the night before in which something black fell on the school.

In the classic book “An Experiment with Time”, the engineer JW Dunne reports that numerous minor details were predicted in his dreams.

A study by WE Cox on train ridership found that significantly fewer people were traveling on trains involved in accidents.

And my personal experience:

One Saturday when I was about ten years old, I convinced myself that I would win the soccer pools (a weekly betting game based on soccer results). Throughout the day I repeated my belief to my family. Checking the soccer results, I found that I had won a minor dividend, an event of just under 2% chance. I have never felt such conviction before or since.

Can psychics and mediums predict the future?

In reality, we can all predict the future to some degree, simply based on our general understanding and knowledge of present conditions. If Manchester United (a major English soccer team) plays a non-league team, we can reasonably predict that United will win easily. And most likely we are right.
