Childhood Obesity: The Ignored Epidemic

Community health is a very important issue that both citizens and politicians overlook. We trust government officials to find cures and solutions to our health problems, but we do not analyze the origin of these problems. If we want to make a change in community health, we must look at the core of the problem and focus more on primary prevention than tertiary prevention techniques. Since most of the health problems in our community are preventable diseases, to prevent them we must eradicate the cause.

Childhood obesity is constantly on the rise and we have been unable to do anything about it. Of course, there have been numerous attempts to reduce the rate of obesity in children, but these attempts are more focused on secondary and tertiary prevention. We are focusing too much on reversing the effects of obesity and we don’t have enough time to prevent obesity in the first place. By informing our community of the health risks they are entering when they are obese, we can teach them how to prevent them. We must target parents and not children. Parents are the food source for children and, at an early age, must be adequately nourished and active so that these preventable diseases do not occur later in life. Physical education in school should be more active and less optional. Actually, we should teach physical education rather than allowing students to roam freely among themselves and choose whether or not they will be active.

A child cannot make life decisions related to their health and, as adults, we must ensure that the children of our communities are in the best of health. Poor communities are just as capable of living healthy lifestyles as the middle class, but without understanding how to do it, they will explain their lack of health to their financial situation. Community leaders should provide options for parents to seek to keep their children healthy. Community health groups, activities, or even a park would be helpful. If we can get our children out of the house and into the yard, we will be making progress. By reducing childhood obesity, we can prevent the likelihood of strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancers, and heart disease. All of these major problems are related to obesity and something must be done to lower our rates. Obesity has risen from 7% in 1980 to 18% in 2012. That is not a good ladder to climb with generations to come. About 1/3 of Americans, including adults, are obese and this is even more overwhelming. The problem is that people either don’t know they are obese or think obesity is just a word that fitter people call less fit people. We must explain to people why they are classified as obese and the health risks associated with obesity. Most people hear obesity and consider it an insult. We fear telling others that they are obese because it sounds painful and parents despise being told that their child is obese. The truth of the matter is that obesity is here and on the rise. There is no way to sugarcoat the facts. We can continue to act like it’s not a big issue and the fees will keep increasing as the years go by. Children should not have high blood pressure or any other illness associated with being overweight. This issue won’t change until we start making it a priority. I think this is the most important problem in the health of our community because people fear the result of bringing childhood obesity to parents. It’s also critical to note that you don’t have to be rich or extremely rich to eat healthier foods and be active. Parents should be more involved in their children’s lives and encourage them to be more active on a day-to-day basis. Limit your time in front of the television and increase your time spent outdoors. Make better food choices when feeding your children. Teach parents the importance of nutrition and fitness and why it should matter to them.

These are ways we can help improve our communities. We must focus on now and not later. When flu season rolls around, we get our flu shots weeks before the virus is taken into account. We get vaccinated because it prevents us from getting the flu. It is not good to get a flu shot once you are infected with the flu virus. Just as this is true, it is also true for obesity. We must take the necessary measures beforehand to prevent the disease from affecting our children.

Bedding through the ages

Bedding through the ages has changed dramatically. Start by looking at the average Roman bed. These were fairly simple bed frames made of wood or iron. If a Roman was rich, he would have his bed covered with the skins of exotic creatures. If a Roman couple were rich, they slept in separate beds, while the poor masses slept together in pairs or more.

With the fall of Rome, elaborate rooms became a thing of the past and the rooms of most Saxon and Viking families were basic one-room rooms. These warriors would sleep only on hardwood benches and tables. Even their blankets and pillows were made of leaves and straw. The poor also made beds of straw and leaves during medieval times. The wealthy upper class had beds that included royal bedding and mattresses. This period also saw the first bed curtains hanging very low from the top of the bed canopy. This was more to protect the occupants of the bed from the elements and insects.

The ideal medieval bed was made to be moved on the spot. When a Lord and Lady traveled, they also traveled with their bed. As times progressed towards the Tudor era, many people could afford the beds with normal frames. Still made from planks and hard boards, these beds were more widely available to the general public. They began to take on the appearance of the beds we have today. However, the construction of a Tudor bed was still missing. Held together with nothing but stretched wires, these wires would have to be replaced when stretched beyond use.

As the Stuart and Georgians beds appeared, the design improved. The French had added the idea of a quilt. These beds were made of elegantly carved wood and joined together without the aid of ropes.

As the years came and went, the Victorian era arrived. These beds were the first bed frames made entirely of iron. Sometimes fitted or welded together, Victorian beds were designed with huge ornate headboards and footboards. As well as a box on which the mattress is placed.

Today our beds are made mainly of metals, plastics or wood. Our mattresses are lined with plastic covers as well as silk sports sheets and other expensive materials.

Investing: preparing for the next bear market

Read the reversal tea leaves

What do the ‘Tea Leaves’ tell us, “The sky is falling”? No, wait, shake the glass again … “Is the sky the limit?” That is the answer we want!

If investing and trading were that simple, we could visit a reader for a few dollars and find out exactly what the future holds. Unfortunately, if you ask three readers what their sheets say, you get three totally different professional opinions. Consistency is not his strong suit.

First of all, I have never made public prophecies about the future direction of the economy or the market before and I do not intend to start now. Also, I’m not a stock market bear, I’m not a bull, I don’t have dumb buttons to hit that make all kinds of dumb noises to tell you to buy, buy, buy, and my dart board really is a dart board and not a stock picking device. I don’t think Chicken Little was a good predictor and I don’t think the world will end tomorrow. But 25 years of market observation experience tells me that there are some things that should certainly be of concern to individual investors.

Let’s filter out the widespread and sensational noise about every tick in the current market, up or down. We’ll leave that to the Talking Heads with their television cameras and a cup of tea leaves; it gives them something to do and prevents them from disturbing us. We want to focus on the big picture, the major events, and how these events are likely to affect the economy and ultimately the future direction of the market. Hopefully, you can get an idea of what may be about to happen and how you can prepare.

Let’s look at some of the main factors.

For example: unemployment, foreclosures, housing market, foreclosure crisis, the dollar, the EU and gold, just to name a few.

It’s not rocket science, simple common sense says the housing market won’t improve until foreclosures are no longer a problem and foreclosures will remain a problem as long as unemployment doesn’t improve. With 25% of homeowners currently upside down on their mortgage (they owe more than the property is worth), the light at the end of the foreclosure tunnel continues to hit a large moving object with a very loud hiss.

As you may know, the mortgage crisis did not just go away. I mean, all those junk mortgages that were packaged up and handed over to the unsuspecting were not paid in full by the happy homeowners, the money is still owed; There was only a slight adjustment to the accounting method so that they now look better on paper. Let’s move on to another indicator.

With housing, mortgages and foreclosures as a backdrop, now think about the price of gold. As you know, gold has been in a tear and continues to hover around $ 1,400 per ounce. You have to ask yourself, what would cause this? Realizing that supply and demand ultimately set the current price, the obvious increase in demand for this precious metal is probably not due to your dentist having been too busy filling cavities or your jeweler planning a larger traffic during the holidays. So that really leaves only a logical conclusion. Concern for the coin, specifically the green back, and more particularly, its value. Forget the few novice traders who jump into buying gold at current prices in the hopes that the price will double overnight and get rich quick, if they don’t lose their money there, they will lose it elsewhere. It is your destiny. What worries us is the big picture. And the big picture tells us that this is not a good indicator of the economy, to say the least.

There is an old saying: “If you want the truth, follow the money.”

Aside from currency concerns, concerned investors seizing gold, or Mr. Bernanke and his proverbial helicopter distributing green endorsements to everyone but you and me, what are the insiders doing?

You know, the ones that should be ‘In the know’ and get an idea of what the economy is likely to do and the effect it will have on the market, not to mention the effect it will have on the stock price of the company. I should add that I find it interesting that giant companies like Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and others have made headlines recently by finding and hiring the best economists outside of places like Harvard. Why would they develop such a sudden interest in economics professors?

On top of that, let’s see what insiders are doing with their stocks.

Insiders, of course, are the most important officers, directors, and shareholders of a company. Those who see first-hand orders, sales, projections, etc. They are also required by law to report almost immediately to the SEC whenever they have bought or sold shares in their companies.

Well guess what? They have been on a sales frenzy. Selling the shares of their companies’ stocks at a record rate that had not been seen since early 2007. Let me remind you that this was only a few months before the Great Recession began.

Vickers Weekly Insider Report analyzes internal data each week and calculates a relationship between the number of shares these informed executives have sold that week and the number they have bought. Vickers Weekly says that over the past four decades (40 years) this ratio has averaged between 2 and 2.5 to 1. Any reading above 2.5 to 1 is an above-average selling rate for connoisseurs, and should be an eye too. -opening for the investor.

Now keep in mind that these experts were selling at a record pace in early 2007 and hold your breath before you read what this buying and selling ratio was in the second week of December 2010. 7.07 to 1. In other words, corporate insiders in general are selling more than seven shares for every one they are buying. Just to show that this is not an anomaly, just two months ago, the sell-to-buy ratio was 5.29 to 1, and it has obviously increased since then.

Another factor that the individual investor should consider when thinking about the “big picture” is bear markets. I know, nobody wants to think about the market sinking and absorbing the average 29% of the value of their investment account and then having to wait a couple of years to equalize again. But like it or not, for the last 100 years there has been a bear market on average every three and a half years (3.5). They come like clockwork, last an average of 18 months, and then leave investors waiting a couple more years for the investment account balance to return to black. Do I need to remind you that the last bear market started in 2007? You do the math.

So what should I do? I’m not suggesting you call your broker and sell yourself, and I certainly don’t want to sound like Chicken Little, it’s not my style. But I do think you should pay close attention to market indices, tighten caps, prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. When I wrote the books “Technical Analysis and Charts” and “Common Sense Investing”, this current market scenario is exactly what I wanted to prepare the individual investor for. And more importantly, how to avoid the dredging of portfolio destruction caused by market downturns. Another very important thing to remember is that your financial advisor will never tell you to sell. Protecting your investment money is your sole responsibility. So, learn about investing and know how to make your own investment decisions or keep your hard-earned money safe in the bank. It’s your choice.

What size cabinet knob bit?

If you have decided to renovate your kitchen, you are probably sick of looking for new hardware, what finish to put on the face of the cabinet, etc. However, one thing you need to know is what size bit to use for the cabinet knobs. The last thing you want to do with new cabinet doors is damage them. There are just a few tricks you need to get the job done right without risking the cabinet finish.

First, a brief introduction to drawer handle pulls. You basically have two types, pommel and handle. They can be attached in different ways.

Many handles will have two small screw holes built into the outer flange. These are the easiest to install.

For thicker flush mount pulls and simple knobs, they are bolted through the back of the cabinet and then screwed into the hardware. You will need to be much more careful when drilling the holes for this.

The first step of any job is prep work. You will need a couple of different sized bits, so choosing a drill rate is a good idea. You will not need a full index, you can achieve everything you need with a selection of bits ranging from ¼ to ½ inch.

Make sure the bits are sharp. The last thing you want is to risk the bit walking across the cabinet surface or chipping the wood.

For the screw puller, installation is really easy. Just mark where the screws go. Tap a pilot hole about a third of the way through the face of the cabinet and sink the screws.

Bolt on handles will take a little more time and prep work.

A single bolt knob is the next step in complexity. To do this, you will need to measure from the edge of the knob to the center of the bolt hole. This will be the offset for your drill.

Place a piece of masking tape over the face of the cabinet where you will install the knob. Now trace around the perimeter of the knob. Take your measurement off-center to mark where the center of the bolt hole is.

Use the ¼ inch drill bit to close a pilot hole. Make sure you drill front to back, I know it’s counterintuitive, but this way if you have any splinters it will be on the inside of the cabinet.

Now just turn up the size of the bits until you are large enough to sink the bolt through the door.

Remove the tape, fire the bolt, and tighten the knob.

The more complex door handle will have two bolts. The basic principle is the same.

Apply tape

Measure compensation

Track the mango.

Mark the tape.

Drill the pilot hole and then go up in size until it reaches the size of the bolt.

The only difference in the fixture is that it will tighten the bolt on the back of the cabinet.

So what size bit to use for cabinet knobs is a bit of a misnomer. You will need quite a few different sizes to achieve a sleek professional look.

Rhonda’s inspiring story "Noisy" Rouser

Nothing is typical about the twenty-eight-year-old, five-foot-seven-inch-tall powerhouse who weighs one hundred and thirty-five pounds and has taken the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) world by storm. Rhonda Jean “Rowdy” Rouser became the first woman to sign with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) in November 2012. In total, she has had eleven wins and no losses since becoming a fighter. Some credit his fighting style and arm barbell movement, while others point to a life built around never giving up on his circumstances. I say it is both and I am inspired by this woman who never gives up or lets life drag her down.

Born in Riverside County, California and raised with her two older sisters and a younger one in Jamestown, North Dakota, life was not easy for Rhonda from the beginning. He had a speech problem that did not allow him to speak properly until he was four years old. Her father committed suicide when she was only eight years old. The two of them had been close. Ron took her out for walks regularly and even bought Rhonda her first doll, which turned out to be a Hulk Hogan Wrestling Buddy. She always loved watching Professional Wrestling and was a huge “Rowdy” Roddy Piper fan. When she began her career in MMA, Rhonda requested and received permission from Piper to use the nickname “Rowdy” in her name. In 2015 he left the audience during Wrestlemania and helped The Rock get Stephanie McMahon and Triple H out of the ring. Whether orchestrated or not, it was a great moment for her and her fans.

Ron’s suicide was unexpected, but it was probably due to a back injury that caused him to live in chronic pain. Shortly after that horrible event, Rhonda Rousey made an astonishing discovery. While searching through some family albums, she discovered a scrapbook that revealed that her mother, AnnMaria De Mars, had been a judo champion with a sixth grade black belt. In 1984, AnnMaria was the first American to hold a world judo championship. Rhonda’s mother later became her coach when Rhonda decided to train and eventually compete. The training process was painful. Rousey suffered injuries to her toes and elbow. She was even bitten by a dog while running just a few days before a competition.

Rhonda made the difficult decision to drop out of school at the age of sixteen and walk away from her family to train in Boston to compete in the 2004 Olympics. During that time she struggled to lose weight and began purging to lose weight. Unable to make it to her weight class, she returned home depressed and immediately faced another challenge. Her mother, who may have felt that moving to Boston was a mistake in the first place, would not allow her to live at home without a job. A once quite close relationship between the two had become very strained. Things got worse when Rousey competed in the 2008 Olympics and managed to win a bronze medal. Her mother insisted on the kind of discipline that Rhonda described as “suffocating” and may have felt that Rousey had not fully committed to a proper training routine.

Rousey rebelled by taking her $ 10,000 prize from the Olympics and moving to Los Angeles. She took a job as a waitress and started having as much fun as she could. At the age of twenty-one, the once self-disciplined athlete began smoking cigarettes and abusing alcohol. He also started smoking marijuana and using a prescription pain reliever to get through every day. Rhonda slept in her car until she found a small studio apartment with bad plumbing. His toilet used to regularly backflush leaving the place smelling the way you would expect given that situation. She also found a drug addict ex-boyfriend whom she dumped shortly after he turned to heroin and stole a car. All of this continued for about a year.

Rousey eventually found better digs in the form of a house near the beach. A friend told her (in less than polite language) that she was spoiled because she was wasting her looks and talents on a destructive lifestyle and poor boyfriend choices. Inspired by the criticism and ready for a change, Rhonda decided to pursue a career in Mixed Martial Arts and had her first amateur match in 2010. She used what has become her signature arm bar move to defeat Hayden Muñoz in just twenty-three seconds. . At that moment a legend was born. A series of quick wins followed and “Rowdy” won his first professional fight in 2011 defeating Ediane Gomes with that same barbell movement in twenty-five seconds.

Rousey soon found a powerful ally in the form of a man who once said he would never allow women to compete in the UFC. Dana White is a man who recognizes talent and that is exactly what happened when he saw Rhonda’s rise in the world of professional MMA. In 2012, White went out of her own way and called Rousey to explain her plan to establish a UFC Women’s Division and build it around it. Rousey was excited and quickly accepted his offer. That changed his life in many ways, including the difference between making just four hundred dollars every time he fought for his current paycheck, which has skyrocketed to a million dollars a game. He has also started modeling and appears in Fast and Furious 7 with Vin Diesel.

“Rowdy” Rhonda Rousey is a hero to me and she should be to everyone who thinks they’ve hit rock bottom with no way up. She shows that no matter where you come from or where you are, there is always a way out if you have the determination and the will of your own to overcome your circumstances. If you really want to get inspired, read her book, My Fight / Your Fight, now available everywhere, and watch her last battle on August 1, 2015 against Bethe Correia. The two have become bitter rivals thanks to Bethe’s comments hinting that Rousey might kill herself like her father did if she loses. Good luck Rhonda!

How to avoid typos when writing a large number of articles quickly

Authors may choose to write multiple articles quickly for a number of reasons, however this runs the risk of excessive typographical errors. If you are a bit obsessive-compulsive, the experience will be frustrating. Of course, the spell checker is the obvious answer, but the spell checker doesn’t catch many misspelled words.

Here are 7 tips to improve your spelling and reduce typos:

1. Improve your own spelling skills. If you think this is hopeless, make a list of frequently misspelled words and keep them in a notebook or computer file handy. Is it embarrassing or embarrassing? Or embarrassing? List the correct spelling for quick reference. You may also want to buy a spelling reference and refresh your memory regarding basic spelling skills. (Remember “i after e, except after c, or when it sounds like a, like in neighbor or peso”?)

2. Write your articles in a word processor and then paste them on the Internet. Your word processor can be set up to correct your spelling on the fly or alert you to questionable spellings. Seeing your words in a different font with different spaces helps too, so your eye doesn’t skip familiar phrases or words.

3. Be aware of common words that are used incorrectly. As you compose in your mind, words that sound the same may end up being misspelled, and the spell checker will miss it. Pay close attention to his and them, you and you, you and you, you and yours, right and write, naked and bear, peak and look, brake and rest.

4. Don’t send your articles immediately. Before submitting an article, perhaps write another, then come back later and reread the first one, when you’re not so close to the material you’ve written. Your eye is much more likely to catch an obvious mistake. Reread your articles at least twice, preferably in different settings. Also, watch out for duplicate letters like i and l – they are hard to see and therefore easily lost. I just had to correct the ‘settings’ myself.

5. Take a break periodically. The mind becomes numb to mistakes when you write too much. You may be able to write more efficiently by taking a 5-10 minute break between articles.

6. Improve your typing skills. Typing is by far the fastest way to compose and can be learned with painstaking effort. In just a few months you can improve from 20 words per minute (words per minute) to at least 50. Get yourself spelled correctly. Slower practice with fewer errors will eventually lead to faster and more accurate writing. Sloppy writing will lead to sloppy spelling.

7. Write about what you know. If you always have to search for things, more errors will appear. Do not use words that you are not sure of, this will inevitably slow you down and lead to mistakes.

The above is what I do to write articles quickly. If I don’t have to research what I’m writing, a 400 word article can be completed in 30-40 minutes. That’s only 10-15 words per minute, allowing a bit of time to think between words. I squirt, finish one thought, then pause until the next one forms in my mind. I try to have at least one complete sentence in my mind before I start writing a sentence, so I don’t have to go back and correct the words. It also allows more flexibility to change your mind without having to go back and correct something.

Potty training an older dog – 7 practical tips

While some people prefer to have cute, cuddly, and adorable puppies, other people like to have an adult dog instead. Older dogs tend to be more mature and perhaps better companions, the best friend a human would need.

However, some people have qualms about having an older dog due to the common notion that people cannot teach old dogs new tricks, especially potty training. But this is not really the case, older dogs can still be potty trained with a few important things in mind.

Here are some tips for potty training an older dog:

1. When potty training an older dog, your focus should be on teaching the dog to relieve himself on the outside, rather than teaching him not to do it on the inside. It is easier to teach an older dog to DO something rather than DO NOTHING.

If your dog already has the old habit of doing it on the inside, it would be hard to focus too much on breaking that habit. It’s a lot easier to help him learn a better alternative to old bad behavior.

2. Select a place where you want the dog to relieve himself, such as a small corner on the lawn. It would be easier to potty train an older dog if you are consistent about where you want it to poop. Going to the same place, over and over again, would help the dog learn the correct place faster. It also helps if you don’t clean the place much until your dog learns to go there when he needs to go to the bathroom.

3. Use the same words to refer to the potty. An older dog can be confused if he uses different phrases to mean the same thing. When you want him to go to the bathroom, use the exact same phrase so that it somehow becomes a command to do the behavior you want him to do.

4. Eliminate all traces of an accident from going to the bathroom inside the house. Dogs’ sense of smell is very keen and the smell of urine or feces in your home can make them think this is the place to go to the bathroom. Use a deodorizing cleaning solution to remove odors that may cling to your floors and carpets.

5. Keep your dog’s sleeping area as tight as possible. Dogs don’t want to go to the bathroom in their bedrooms and by keeping the area long enough for him to sleep and perhaps roll over, there would be no room for him to go to the bathroom. Every morning when the dog wakes up, take him to his usual potty to relieve himself there.

6. Decrease your dog’s food and water intake before he falls asleep. This prevents accidents from happening because when your dog is full of water or food while sleeping, he may not have the ability to control the call of nature.

7. Make it easy for your dog to exit through a dog gate or leave the back door open. If this is not practical in your area, leave a bell for your dog to reach. Take the dog out each time you ring the doorbell so they know that the doorbell is a signal to get out.

Whoever says they can’t teach their older dog new tricks may be too lazy. In fact, it is possible to potty train an older dog if you know these tips and have the right amount of patience.

5 types of relationships to avoid

If you start to question your sense of self and wonder who you are, it may be as a result of the relationship you are in. If you left a relationship and you have no idea how to behave now that you are out of it, it is very likely that you were trapped in one of these relationships.

All relationships have their moments. What healthy relationships allow us to do is slam doors from time to time and may not be the end of the world.

When you are in a toxic relationship and you are stepping on eggshells and you are too scared to say anything in case you are ridiculed / ignored / scolded, then that is a completely different matter. You know when you leave these relationships that there is an initial sigh of relief, and then we start to wonder. “What am I supposed to do now?”

Here are 5 types of relationship to avoid and understand. If your personality is being subsumed by that of your partner, or was controlled by them before you left, then it is time for you to look at yourself and what you need.

1. The carrot hanger

This relationship is hideous. The perpetrator keeps you on your toes, waiting for a few crumbs from the teacher’s table. They tell you things like, “in the future, maybe we can do xyz together.” The day that happens never comes. They know exactly what they are doing; They control you from a distance, playing puppeteer while you hope for the best. They constantly disappoint you and then unexpectedly redeem themselves to get the cycle started anew. They have you, hook and line, and have no intention of letting you go.

This level of control has to do with your low self-esteem, not yours, and your need for attention. Its shortcomings show up in how you start to feel about the relationship. Once you recognize this, you can let it go.

2. The controller

The controller is a different kind of toxic partner to the carrot hanger, although both are in control at the heart of what they do. The controller likes to get into your head and make you guess. They say things like, “If you think that dress is okay, then wear it.” And so your doubt arises. They also tell you how well you’re doing … and not in a good way. It’s almost as if they are saying, “I like you, no matter what other people think.” This type of behavior binds you to them for a period of time, because they are eroding your confidence and causing you to lean on them.

See this for what it is. When they put their head to the side and say, “awww, you’ll be fine, whatever happens,” they are telling you that they will take you under their wing, and they have you. Walk away.

3. The narcissist

Have you ever felt completely secondary to a partner? Like you’re not much more than an accessory? Do you know that your toxic partner loves themselves more than anyone else will? So you need to understand, right now, that you will never be good enough for them, no matter what you do. This type of association has led many wonderful people to believe that they are useless; And if you have a jealous narcissist, then you are theirs to be treated badly, no one else. You are a reflection of them.

Recognize that you will always be the runner-up when it comes to them. Are you willing to put up with this for your whole life?

4. The silent

Grumpy couples are a nightmare. They sulk at perceived slights from you. You will spend your time playing “guess what mood x is in tonight”. They will walk around with their ass face slapped and say “nothing” when you ask them what’s wrong. Make sure you have done something and you are being punished. You could have left the cap off the toothpaste or fucked his best friend, the reaction is the same, disproportionate and unfair. And I guess you haven’t slept with best friend.

Spending his life racking his brains over what he might have done this time to justify the silent treatment makes him a nervous wreck. Call them about it …

5. The culprit

When you take the worst of the situation when someone (or the toxic partner) has done something wrong, then you are the scapegoat of their life. You end up being the receiver of everything, because you are there. Everything becomes your fault, and if you stand up for yourself or disagree, we will receive the silent treatment once again. One way or another, what went wrong for you, or overreacted to, somehow becomes you, it’s your fault and because it’s in the world. It’s unreasonable, it’s unfair, and it shows that they can’t accept responsibility or filter out the inconvenience.

If it becomes your fault, “you’re the one who wanted this” when, for example, you fail a credit check to buy your engagement ring on installment … get out of the relationship before you get stuck! Don’t accept this behavior! (just an example, my friends …).

If your toxic partner is or was all of these things; well done in acknowledging it. So what’s next?

An interesting letter from Thomas Jefferson to Handsome Lake

Handsom Lake, a religious leader and prophet of the Seneca people came to the forefront of Iroquois culture when he defended the teachings he received from three visions or dreams. Handsome Lake nearly died of alcoholism and its related effects. In 1799, at death’s door, three visions appeared to him that saved his life and changed the lives of the Iroquois from despair to hope. These visions shared the idea that the Iroquois should return to their traditional roots, while still accepting the new realities of their current situation.

Native American tribes at the time were desperate for the circumstances they were in. The country and its lands had been invaded by European settlers fleeing Europe in search of a new home. As more and more people arrived, things unknown to the tribal peoples were presented to them; not all were good. As an example, the settlers introduced alcohol (white man’s fire water) to them.

The Native American way of life changed dramatically with migration from Europe. Lands were taken; land was sold. The Iroquois culture was getting lost in the “ways of the white man.” As a result, more Native Americans turned to “drinking” to ease their grief from the situation unfolding around them. Handsome Lake’s visions of hope and encouragement gradually began to turn his gloom into optimism and return his longing to prosper and succeed in his new environment.

Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States from 1801 to 1809, wrote a letter to Handsome Lake. Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence and many other important articles. He was highly admired for his stance on equal rights for all and yet he was sometimes criticized for his own practice of owning slaves, his actions seemingly contradicting his words.

President Thomas Jefferson learned of the progress Handsome Lake was making among tribal peoples and his proposal that they stay away from alcohol. President Jefferson admired Handsome Lake and thought he was a man worthy of negotiating peaceful settlements and agreements. A government agent, Captain Irvine, was assigned to Handsome Lake to work near him and carry his messages with the president back and forth. Handsome Lake and some Iroquois representatives were invited to dinner with Thomas Jefferson and he spoke with the president about the rights of Native Americans to conserve their land. President Jefferson gave Handsome Lake his word in a letter in 1802, reiterating their discussions at that dinner, saying that no land would be taken unless the tribes were willing to sell. Jefferson said the government was always willing to buy land, but did not ask if the owner did not want to sell.

President Thomas Jefferson also proclaimed that the United States would no longer sell liquor or spirits to Native Americans, as that was Handsome Lake’s desire to curb and control the influence of alcohol on tribal peoples. Jefferson also instituted a law to prohibit people from purchasing Native American land, and during any transaction, a government representative would have to be present to ensure fair process.

In the letter, Jefferson refers to Handsome Lake’s complaint that a land deal by New York State was unfair. Jefferson argues that a government representative was there and assured him that everything was fair and just and that the seller was selling freely.

President Jefferson also said that while he understood the hunting land needs of tribal people, he also believed that Handsome Lake should encourage his people to think about the great opportunity agriculture presents. The president tried to persuade Handsome Lake to promote the benefits of planting crops and for women to weave their own family’s clothing to make a better quality of life possible for Native Americans. President Jefferson expressed his wish and hope for the happiness of the Iroquois and all of their “red brothers.”

The letter was unusual for the time; it was an open admission of Jefferson’s willingness to work with Native Americans and count them as brothers. President Jefferson’s letter was also an important endorsement of the Handsome Lake religious movement. Whether or not your letter withstood the test of time in efforts to count Native Americans as equals is left for you to decide from the true story.
