The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce – Judith Wallerstein

This wonderfully researched book examines the lives of divorced children over a 25-year period. It shows that the challenges for divorced families, especially children, are complex and continue to transform society. It is stated that Four. Five% first marriages break up, that the risk of divorce in second marriages is 60%, cast 25% of today’s people between the ages 18-44 years have divorced parents.

The difficulty of writing this article is that only a few comments can be made on a book and a topic, the full consideration of which would take us very far. The first paragraph of the introductory chapter recounts a Sesame Street episode in which Kermit the frog interview a little bird asking where he lived. The bird’s response is that it spends half its time happily playing in its mother’s nest and the rest of its time frolicking in its father’s nest.

This little story illustrates one of the many assumptions that this book completely dispels. Many parents and policy makers assume that as soon as the marriage is dissolved and the parents are released from an unhappy union, their children’s lives will be exactly as before. This book destroys this notion and clearly shows the lasting effects of divorce on children, and how it later shapes and even ruins their lives.

The book represents the voices of these children. Now they have grown up and some have families of their own. They narrate their difficulties in dealing with loneliness, anger, depression, drug abuse, and even violence in their own lives that followed the breakdown of their families. They talk about the unpleasantness of jumping from nest to nest, often having few options for how to spend their time and feeling inferior to children from intact families. Now they are forcing society to pay more attention to their interests.

The book is written in five parts, like five stories, and each section demonstrates the unique challenges these children face. Part One it’s about Karen james, a child forced by divorce to be a caregiver early in her life and continued to put the needs of others above herself throughout her growing years. Your life is compared to Gary, a son of parents who decided to stay together despite their difficult marriage.

Karen’s father was a successful dermatologist and her mother worked in a flower shop. She regularly yelled at her husband for not paying enough attention to the family. He also yelled complaints at her. The situation worsened when Ms. James lost her mother in an accident. Her husband became the main target of her anger, as Ms. James quickly sank into depression. Eventually and inevitably, their marriage ended in divorce, as they continued their wild feud with their children watching.

With her father meeting and marrying someone else, Karen’s mother moved from one relationship to another. Karen, from a very young age, became a surrogate mother for her siblings and even her mother. His own childhood had ended early. He continued this habit of nurturing others in his personal relationships: he always felt responsible for the problems of others.

His story is juxtaposed to that of Gary, He grew up in a home where the parents weren’t happy with each other, but they got over it despite their difficulties. Gary He grew up, married, and had his own family. His parents had been a model to him of how to keep the family together, despite their unhappiness with each other.

The second part deals with Larry, a child raised in a family ruined by the domestic violence and rage that plagued his life after the breakdown of his parents’ divorce. It is compared to Carol, a young man who, like him, witnessed scenes of parental violence without them being separated.

The third part is about Paula, who suffered intense loneliness after the divorce when her mother started studying and continued working at the same time. The divorce brought with it a financial nightmare for both his parents and his mother to make ends meet and had to study and work at the same time. This not only caused the loss of structure in Paula’s life but also the constant presence of one of her parents. She was an orphan of father and mother.

The fourth part is about Billy, a vulnerable child with special medical needs because he was born with a congenital heart disease. Billy’s health made it difficult for him to adjust to the new family environment. Her mother quickly remarried and focused on her new family. His father was concerned about sports and his business. Neither seemed sensitive to the time and attention Billy needed.

The fifth part is about Lisa, who grew up in a family in which everything possible was done to ensure harmony. After the divorce, his parents were determined not to make their son’s suffering worse and often cooperated with each other. Lisa’s case leads to the question: Isn’t fighting enough? Does the absence of conflict between divorced parents protect the child from suffering? However, even this did not stop Lisa’s anger, even though she seemed to have adjusted better than others after her parents’ divorce.

Although her father apparently happily remarried, there was a greater distance between Lisa and her parents than when their family was intact. He had to adjust to the two families, while continuing to jump from one parent to the other. As she went from being a girl to a woman in her thirties, she still harbored fears about marriage.

His life mirrored that of many children of divorcees (40% of them) who decide to remain single as adults. Some of them, like Lisa, lived together, others jumped from one adventure to another, and some led very lonely lives. Lisa’s story illustrates that although children feel immediately the impact of divorce, it is in adulthood that they suffer the most – especially when they venture out in search of love.

The book is an eloquent account of the aftermath of divorce and seeks to make us understand the long-term impact on children. The authors caution us that although we have created a world where there is greater freedom for adults, this comes with considerable and hidden costs. The authors wisely point out that their book is not a pronouncement against divorce. They are aware of the acute suffering of adults trapped in failed marriages. They are also equally aware that very few adults make the decision to divorce without due consideration.

But they just want to point out that while divorce can be beneficial for parents, the consequences for children are often dire. This book also seeks to help those affected by divorce rebuild their lives. This book is also for policy makers – judges and a wide variety of stakeholders in the legal system – urging them to pay more attention to children’s interests during and after a divorce.

The authors wisely conclude that while post-divorce culture needs to be improved, much more effort should be put into strengthening the institution of marriage.

Financial planning for your small business

Having a business plan is a roadmap to success

If you don’t know where you are going, any road is fine. But if you’re planning for success, getting on the right track is critical. A 2015 business plan is an essential roadmap for business success.

Business plans differ based on individual details, but there are some basic general concepts that apply to most businesses. Several important planning steps are required. This article will highlight these key steps.

Describe your company

Your business description provides information on what you do, what differentiates your business from others, and the markets your business serves. As you develop your written business plan for 2015, include:

  • Describe the services and / or products that your company provides

  • Describe the customers and markets your business is targeting.

  • Describe the problems your business solves for your customers.

  • Describe how your products and services meet the needs of these customers.

  • Describe the competitive advantages your company has, such as its location, knowledgeable staff, efficient operations, and ability to solve problems.

Describe your target industries and customers

Describe in which industries your potential customers operate. List the main customer groups within your industry. What are the critical needs of your potential customers? Are those needs met? Can you meet the needs of your customers?

Shrink your target market to a manageable size.

Many companies make the mistake of trying to attract too many target markets. Remember, it cannot be everything to everyone. Select your goals carefully.

Describe your revenue and sales goals for 2015

Realistically, based on past performance, what gross income (sales / commissions / fees) can you expect?

Describe the customers who will provide the revenue.

Realistically, based on past performance, which customers do you expect to provide revenue? Explain the logic behind your calculation and conclusions.

Describe your communication strategy

How are you going to reach your customers? Consider using a combination of the following tactics: promotions, advertising, public relations, personal selling, and printed materials such as brochures, catalogs, flyers, etc. Decide which one works best for your business. You cannot afford to use them all.

Describe your fees, commissions and pricing structure

Plan in advance where, when and to whom you will charge what prices. Avoid getting caught up in offering unnecessary discounts and concessions.

Describe your financial projections

Are you going to seek external financing? Do you have adequate internal funding? Develop your financial projections after you’ve analyzed your 2015 marketing goals and set clear goals; that’s when you can allocate resources efficiently.

Resume

Make sure your 2015 business plan matches your financing availability. Be sure to acknowledge the business assumptions you have made in your projections. On a monthly basis, check your actual business results against your projections and assumptions. Identify the causes of missed goals. Make monthly corrected assumptions and projections. It’s much better if you catch mistakes early, before they cause damage. Planning for a successful 2015 is a one-year ongoing project, not a “do it once and forget it” project.

Home Kitchen

Materials for stone kitchen countertops: advantages and disadvantages of common stone countertops

One of the hottest trends in home design is stone kitchen countertops. These luxurious, durable and heat resistant countertops are a beautiful and practical addition to any home. But with all the different types of natural and artificial stone out there, selecting the right one for your home can seem overwhelming. It may take a little time to research, but each of these countertop materials has benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to evaluate which one is right for your needs.

Granite countertops

Granite is a common type of igneous (volcanic) rock that forms beautiful crystalline textures. A type of hard rock, granite is well suited for use as a countertop in kitchens and bathrooms because it is resistant to heat and scratches. Granite is formed by heat and pressure over hundreds of years, so no two pieces of this natural stone are exactly alike. This unique feature is particularly attractive to homeowners who want a truly unique space. Granite countertops are available in a wide range of natural colors and patterns, from neutrals to striking blues and greens. Natural stone countertops like granite generally increase the value of your home more than engineered stones like quartz, as buyers tend to lean towards natural materials.

However, despite its prestigious reputation, granite countertops have several disadvantages. First of all, granite is a relatively porous stone, which means that it must be chemically sealed to resist staining. The sealing process is simple, but must be repeated occasionally; some people view this need for routine maintenance as negative. Second, granite tends to be an expensive material. While granite tiles can be used instead of granite slabs to lower the price of the countertop, not everyone can afford a granite countertop.

Marble countertops

Many homeowners are drawn to the luxurious appearance of marble countertops. The distinctive appearance of marble can dramatically increase the value of your home, as it is generally considered a prestigious and sophisticated material. Additionally, marble countertops are the preferred surface for serious bakers, as cold stone is ideal for pie, pastry, and other baked goods. Marble countertops are also available in a wide range of colors, from delicate blushes to vibrant blacks, each uniquely shaped by nature.

Marble has a few distinct drawbacks as a countertop material. For starters, marble is a much softer stone than granite, so it has a greater tendency to scratch and spoil than granite countertops. Furthermore, polished marble is vulnerable to etching when acidic liquids are invariably spilled on it. These stains and marks can destroy the finish of your countertop; You can avoid this problem by choosing a polished finish over a polished finish, but most homeowners prefer the look of polished marble. Finally, marble is a porous and absorbent stone, which means it tends to stain. While some homeowners like the patina their marble countertops develop over the years, many find it inconvenient.

Soapstone countertops

You are probably familiar with soapstone from your high school chemistry lab; those black tables were made of soapstone. Today soapstone is becoming popular on kitchen countertops due to its extreme stain resistance. It is also heat resistant and does not etch.

One downside to soapstone countertops is that they are only available in a limited number of dark colors. Soapstone is generally grayish in nature, although it is generally oiled to a black finish for commercial and residential use. Soapstone counters are also vulnerable to scratches. However, soapstone countertops can be sanded to remove nicks and marks, so this susceptibility to scratching is not always considered a major deficiency.

Limestone Countertops

Limestone is a sedimentary rock with qualities similar to marble. Available in a wide range of neutral and white colors, limestone countertops have a smooth appearance, unlike granite. Formed from the sand and shells of aquatic life, limestone often includes small fossils and shells; Some homeowners particularly value this unique aspect of limestone countertops.

However, like marble, limestone is a soft rock: it tends to stain and scratch easily and is susceptible to attack. Your limestone countertop can be sealed to help prevent staining and etching, but limestone is not recommended for heavy-use areas like kitchens.

Quartz countertops

Quartz countertops are constructed of an engineered stone made of 93% quartz, pigment, and resin. This stone countertop material has many of the same qualities as granite, but without the maintenance issues. Quartz countertops are heat and scratch resistant and will not stain. And, unlike granite, quartz never needs to be sealed. As a man-made material, quartz countertops have a uniform color and pattern. Some homeowners prefer this uniform look to the unique aspects of natural stone. It also means that if a segment of your quartz countertop is damaged, an identical replacement section can be obtained from the manufacturer without worrying about the match.

While quartz countertops may appear to be inherently superior, they have a number of drawbacks. The main problem is that, despite a similar cost, engineered quartz countertops do not add to the value of your home as much as granite countertops do. Home buyers prefer natural material over man-made countertops, so you’ll want to keep this in mind if you’re remodeling your kitchen as an investment. Also, although quartz countertops are designed to mimic the natural look of granite, some people believe that quartz lacks the depth and beauty of granite. To be sure which look you prefer, be sure to see samples of natural and engineered stone. Finally, with quartz, your color and pattern options are more limited than with natural stone. There are a large number of colors available, but especially if you are trying to exactly match your existing color scheme, you may prefer the limitless rainbow of natural stone.

Corian countertops

Corian is another type of engineered stone similar to quartz. This type of solid surface stone countertop offers most of the advantages of granite and quartz, as well as several unique benefits. Like granite and quartz countertops, Corian countertops are resistant to heat, stains, and scratches. In addition, it is not porous, so it will never be necessary to seal it. Plus, Corian has the added benefit of being certified kosher. Unlike granite, Corian countertops can also be fully integrated with Corian backsplashes and sinks to create a visually perfect surface.

However, Corian also has disadvantages. It is heat resistant, but only to 212ºF. Higher temperatures will damage your countertop, so you will almost always need to protect your Corian countertop from hot objects. Also, as with quartz, some people prefer the natural look of granite to the uniform and consistent look of Corian. Corian countertops are also only available in limited colors and patterns, which some people don’t like.

With these advantages and disadvantages in mind, you are now armed with the information you need to choose the perfect kitchen countertop material for your home. Visit your local stone countertop installer or showroom to view samples and learn more about how to make your dream of beautiful stone countertops come true.

8-bit games are here to get us in pixels!

When you think of Pixels, you instantly go back a few years to your childhood, where your PlayStation and Nintendo were your best friends. This new release is the exact same movie, promising to take you down the nostalgia lane with its focus on old 8-bit games! While we all know the movie is our childhood fantasy come true, it also shows what happens when the game characters we’ve grown to love turn against us!

When NASA sends out videos of popular culture references today in an attempt to make contact with extraterrestrial forces, something goes terribly wrong. Within the feeds, there are popular video game characters, such as Pac Man and Donkey Kong. Sent as a gesture of goodwill, but received as something else entirely, aliens misinterpret video games as hostile and violent, taking the form of 8-bit video game characters, and invading Earth! The President of the United States calls for every weapon he has, but the Army and Navy fail to keep the world safe, and the President calls on his gamer friends to take care of these pixelated foes!

Pixels has already made waves at the global box office, with the fact that it has a life-size Pac Man and Donkey Kong. The point-devouring character has gotten bigger and hungrier, and he seems to want to eat whatever he can find in his own way! The film also stars Kevin James, who plays the President of the United States, and one of the main protagonists of the film. Aside from James, the film also stars Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage, all of whom are old childhood playmates. While Sandler and James are a burning house on screen, with their effortless chemistry and charisma, Dinklage will be seen with a new avatar after his stint on the popular TV show Game of Thrones. Dinklage will be called Eddie Plant, or Fireblaster in the movie, and he will be seen rocking some cool hues and a spooky mullet!

The movie also has the Pac Man Ghosts, except this time they are cars. And not just any car, they are super cool Mini Coopers. Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde are back, and they sure look good! While the movie recently opened at the box office, the response hasn’t been huge, but it has been a bit bland. Even with incredible CGI, most viewers and critics have not been enthusiastic about the film. The movie is a fun watch though, if you’re looking for some nostalgia!

How To Lose The Killer Fat Around Your Tummy

When you are diagnosed with diabetes, the first advice you get from your doctor is: lose weight. The fact is … most diabetics have too much belly fat.

You have two types of fat around your waist … subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.

Subcutaneous fat it is the fat found under the skin. It is visible fat and is generally soft and squishy, which is why it is often called “love handles” when it is around the waist. If you are not overweight and lead an active life, this type of fat is not dangerous even if your belly sticks out a bit. It only becomes a problem if you are seriously overweight.

Visceral fat is different. It is not so visible. This is because it is “deep fat”, that is, it is found within the abdominal wall where it surrounds the organs and releases hormones (which is why it is also called “active” fat). Too much fat can result in the release of excessive amounts of hormones … this causes inflammation, putting you at risk for a variety of health problems.

Unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat can make your stomach feel hard. Although not visible, as you grow older, the visceral fat causes your belly to expand. A hard, protruding stomach indicates danger.

Why is visceral fat bad?

Many chronic diseases are caused or worsened by this type of fat. These include heart disease, diabetes, some types of cancer, and back pain.

Heart disease… release of visceral fat cells cytokines, chemical messengers that affect the action of other cells, such as those that control blood pressure, cholesterol, and insulin regulation. Since cytokines affect organ function, having them floating around in your body is not a good thing. High blood pressure and high cholesterol levels contribute to heart disease.

Visceral fat tends to affect men and women at different stages in their lives. Young women tend to gain subcutaneous fat on their hips and thighs, while young men generally add visceral fat to their bellies. Therefore, men in their 30s are more likely to suffer from heart disease than women. Women are at a higher risk of developing visceral fat later in the menopause.

Diabetes… people who are overweight or obese are actually 90 times more likely to develop diabetes because belly fat affects the function of their organs. Studies indicate that people with deep abdominal fat lose their sensitivity to insulin, the hormone that regulates our blood glucose levels.

If you have diabetes or are diabetic, you need to lose weight and reduce your visceral fat to bring your blood sugar levels back to normal.

Cancers… cancer is caused by mutations in our cells. When we have excess visceral fat, it signals our body to produce hormones that cause our cells to divide and multiply. The more often our cells divide, the greater the chances that one of them will mutate into a cancer cell.

Therefore, more fat means more opportunities for cancer to develop. In fact, the WHO states that up to a third of all colon, kidney and digestive tract cancers are related to being overweight.

Back pain and tension… your core, meaning your abdomen or center of your body, needs to be strong if you want to have good balance and healthy joints, and protect yourself from injury. Having too much belly fat generally means that your abdominal muscles are weak due to the visceral fat that surrounds your vital organs. When these core muscles are weak, the back muscles must take over. As a result, you are likely to strain your back and experience chronic back pain.

What Causes Visceral Fat?

There are many reasons why you gain weight around the waist … eating too much … getting older … family traits … alcohol … stress.

Eat excessively… when we take in more calories than we expend in our daily activities, our bodies store the extra calories in the form of fat. We all need to eat less.

growing older… as we age we begin to lose muscle mass and gain fat. This is normal but it means that if we do not learn to eat less we will gain weight, that is, we will gain weight.

Family traits… our genetics and family history influence the type of fat we get. If your parents had excess visceral fat, chances are you have too much too, unless you take steps to stay slim and fit.

Alcohol… drinking lots of intoxicating beverages (wine, beer, or spirits) contributes to the build-up of “beer belly”, which is primarily visceral fat. But keep in mind that a beer belly can develop from drinking wine or spirits, not just beer.

Stress… continuous high levels of stress, the kind we experience in modern life, cause a build-up of cortisol, the stress hormone, in our systems. Over time, this hormone increases the amount of fat around our stomach.

Who is most at risk for visceral fat?

Anyone of any age who overeats (that is, who eats more than they burn in various activities) will develop belly fat. However, it tends to increase with age, especially among women.

Those most at risk of developing excess visceral fat are … white men … African American women … Indian men and women of the subcontinent … people who drink sugary beverages … those who are already overweight or obese.

The good news is that visceral belly fat responds very well to diet … and all belly fat can be significantly reduced with exercise.

So, to narrow down to a sleek tummy line, forget about pills, purgatories, and herbal remedies, and ignore miracle cures … you can get rid of belly fat naturally with nothing but a healthy diet and plenty of exercise.

Reduce belly fat through diet.

One of the best ways to reduce both types of abdominal fat … subcutaneous and visceral … is to create a calorie deficitIn other words, eat fewer calories than your body burns. All you need to do is estimate the calories you consume each day and reduce that number by at least 25%. It is not too difficult to do and it works.

At the same time, you must follow the Beating Diabetes diet. Here it is:

Eat natural foods that are low in sugar, low in fat, low in salt, high in fiber, and have a low glycemic index. Your diet should consist primarily of plants and lean proteins. Wash your food with plenty of water.

Following this diet is quite easy.

Ditch sugary foods and drinks first … no more sodas or sugar in your tea and coffee, which have been linked in some studies to the development of visceral fat. You should also eliminate cakes and sweets, in fact any food with added sugar.

If you’re in the mood for sugar, fight the craving … it can be done. Eating lean protein from legumes and lean meats can help you feel full and reduce your cravings.

To reverse your diabetes and reduce visceral fat, you must eliminate as much fat as possible from your diet. You need to completely eliminate trans fats and saturated fats, which are closely related to the development of visceral fat. This means eating unprocessed foods, that is, lean meats, avocados, and other fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as beans and oatmeal that are full of soluble fiber.

To reduce your salt intake, simply stop using the salt shaker and avoid all processed foods as they are loaded with salt, both to preserve them and to give them favor. In fact, processed foods also often contain large amounts of sugar and fat to enhance flavors.

Foods rich in fiber are whole grains such as oats, most vegetables and fruits. Getting plenty of fiber ensures smooth digestion (as long as you drink plenty of water).

Eating whole grains means you are avoiding simple carbohydrates like white bread, other refined grains, and sugary foods that are low in nutritional value but high in calories. These foods have a high glycemic index, which means they are digested quickly, leading to spikes in blood glucose, the scourge of diabetics, and the rapid development of visceral fat. Whole grains are slowly digested (meaning they are low GI) and are much healthier.

Reduce belly fat with exercise

Research has shown that exercise plays an important role in losing belly fat. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in October 2005 compared men who exercised with men who did not and found that exercise is crucial for reducing visceral fat.

The researchers found that a modest exercise program avoids significant increases in visceral fat, while more vigorous exercise results in significant reductions in visceral, subcutaneous, and total abdominal fat without any change in calorie intake.

However, performing exercises targeting the stomach area, such as sit-ups and crunches, do not remove abdominal fat … although it does strengthen the abdominal muscles.

There are several ways to reduce belly fat through exercise:

Get moving … simply increasing your level of physical activity will burn more calories. If you have a sedentary occupation, get up from your desk and move about every hour or so. Parking far from your destination so that you have to walk the last few meters and take the stairs instead of taking the elevator can burn more calories and lower your stomach.

Get cardio … get your heart pumping and reduce visceral fat by burning calories. But start slowly by walking or swimming before you start running or jumping rope.

High Intensity Interval Training … where you alternate intense exercise with slower activities, burns belly fat and is ideal if you are not ready for sustained high intensity exercise. Start slowly (say) by walking for 5 minutes and then running for 1 minute.

Strength training … can help you lose weight because muscles burn more calories than fat. You should practice regularly several days a week. In addition to reducing belly fat, strength training can help you manage your diabetes and prevent other chronic diseases like osteoporosis.
